Test Beams in Europe

• European AIDA initiative • AIDA: Advanced European Infrastructures for Detectors

and Accelerators• 2011 to 2014 funds 28 Million Euros (8M from the EU)• http://aida.web.cern.ch/aida/index.html• Funds among many other things access to the test

beams at CERN and DESY• It’s a European initiative but not a closed club, so in

order to participate hook up with your friends abroad…

*) Intensity is for 1% momentum bite, nominal target and 2.1011 ppp on target and intensity collimator(s) wide opened. Spill 400 ms (could be > 500 ms at 20 GeV/c) Some more intensity control exists for the primary beam (0.5-1.0)

and via the target efficiency (~0.02-1.0).

CERN Schedule

Test beams are available

PS T9, T10, T11,SPS H2, H4, H6, H8 2011 : begin May to mid November2012 : begin May to mid November2013 : no beams at all at CERN2014 : maybe beams from the PS from mid of the year;          Horst Breuker does not expect beams from the SPS2015 : begin May to mid November everything depends on the performance of the LHC and its experiments; They have to reach 10 fb-1 in the run which started last weekend ...

DESY Test Beam

DESY provides three test beam lines with 1-5 (-6) GeV/c electrons Very simple system, no beam optics, just momentum selection via dipole magnet.Bremsstrahlung beam generated by a carbon fibre in the circulating beam of the electron/positron synchrotron DESY II.

Photons are converted to electron/positron pairs with a metal plate. Beam is spread out into a horizontal fan with a dipole magnet.Collimator cuts out final beam.

Review 2010

13 User Groups53 Weeks scheduledSevere accident

Vacuum leak at one carbon fibre holderUnfortunately two were dismantled lost two beams for 5 weeks (May/June) Luckily we could squeeze all user in one beam area (24)Water leak at dipole magnet (24) (end May) 1 user lost 1 day Provisional fix stayed until regular maintenance week Uff! Exchange dipole magnet

Design and build new fibre holders Installation in summer 2011

SummaryTest Beams available:

• 2011 CERN, DESY, FNAL and a little bit ESTB• 2012 CERN, DESY, ESTB (possibly hadrons later in ‘12)• 2013 DESY, ESTB, FNAL• 2014 CERN (maybe), DESY, ESTB, FNAL• 2015 CERN, DESY, ESTB, FNAL

ESTB will be a much appreciated addition to the dwindling portfolio of possible test beams
