International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 4/20
Archimede VI (1/3)
• Main innovations
• New infusion-composite hull• Smaller, less surface/friction drags, faster
• Polycarbonate window
• Polyurethane fins by liquid plastic molding
• Sonar
• Higher construction efficiency• Low cost processes• Investments in tools
• Looking for speed !

OUTSIDE LAYERS
INSIDE LAYERS
• Hull – Composition
• Sandwich composite : increased bending strength• Corecell A-foam (closed-cell nautical foam) for buoyancy
• Additional materials to the hull• Polycarbonate for the window• Plastic, steel and polyurethane for the fins• Steel, corecell and epoxy fitting for the rear shaft• Polycarbonate “pucks” for crewing fixation
• Hull – fabrication
• Counter-mold (plug) • Mold• 2 x infusion hull halves with vacuum• Assembly of the halves with 2 additional vacuum infusions
International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 12/20
Design – Hydrodynamic (3/3)
• Fins – design
• Removable 2 sets of fins• A – Control designed• B – Speed designed
International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 13/20
Design – Fins (1/2)
• Fins – fabrication
• Model -> Silicone rubber mold -> Polyurethane parts• Stronger top fin vs 3 other fins (less fragile)
• 2-3 hours to get a new fin from scratch !
• Huge advantages over “traditional” composite fins•Faster•Cheaper•Higher surface quality
International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 14/20
Design – Fins (2/2)
• Direction• One hand pilot control• Bike cables tightly linked to the fins
• Better precision• Remember Archimede 5…
loosely cables on big pulleys !
• Referencing system – during construction• Laser • Precise positions of inner systems
• Referencing system – in competition• Visual control through 360 window• Sonar aid

We had some issues:
International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 18/20
Conclusion
Sorry for the presentationdelay yesterday…
• Pilot not coming due to medical surgery• Dive master burn out• VP-logistic cancelled 10 min before departure• 2 other members cancellation in the past two weeks
• Team leader in civil engineering!
And last but not least…
So…
International Submarine Races # 12 – Team Archimede 19/20
Conclusion
We continued our work on evenings at the hotelin order to finish the submarine !
Any questions ?
