BIRD PORTRAITURE PORTFOLIOLUCY ALEXANDRA HOWSON
For some reason I have always been a little bit obsessed with birds, although I never had much luck with keeping them as pets - one of my budgies flew away and the other drowned in orange juice (his name was Peter Andre).Since then my views on keeping birds caged has changed to an affinity with their natural desire to be free and to make decisions without feeling trapped or caged by someone or something else. We all need room to fly.
Owls are my favourite birds, with their big expressive eyes and nocturnal habits. This was the first portrait I did of myself as an Owl, in the style of a cartoon I did in 2007 called Owly as part of a t shirt series I created using animals to represent student bad habits. The following series of photoshoots have been an extension of my obsession with birds interlinking with human traits, quirky make up and surrealist undertones.
