Book clubA trio of brilliant books for the holidays
Oh my. Joy of joys! A new book from Jojo Moyes, just in time for the holidays. Inspired by a remarkable true story, the book is described as ‘the unforgettable journey of five extraordinary women living in extraordinary and perilous times’. The Giver of Stars is the story of Alice Wright, a woman who leaves England for America, only to discover that swapping the twitching curtains of suburbia for being the wife of an American businessman and living in the wild mountains of Kentucky isn’t, actually, the answer to her prayers. Then she meets Margery O’Hara, a woman who isn’t afraid of anything or anyone. And a woman on a mission! The pair, along with three others, join up and, ignoring obvious dangers and loads of social disapproval, travel hundreds of miles a week to deliver books to isolated families. When a body is found in the mountains, and one of the group becomes a suspect, their newly formed friendship is put to the test. The Giver of Stars is unputdownable. Penguin, R270.
Ever since reading the marvellous Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight, we’ve pounced on any new Alexandra Fuller with delight (unlike her mother, who thinks they’re ‘dreadful’). Just released is Travel Light, Move Fast, a tribute to Alexandra’s father, who died unexpectedly – and not with the drama the family expected – in Budapest, ‘the poor man’s Paris’. Read in equal parts of envy and horror – her parents launched from one calamity to the next, fuelled with gin and in a haze of cigarette smoke, along with the children, a handful of dogs and a collection of orange Le Creuset pots – the memoir jumps from present to past. Alexandra tells of the lessons her father taught her. Lessons about life, love, loss and tragedy. Lessons that led her to cope with the loss of her father, of the fallout with her sister, and of the unbearable final bereavement she reveals in the final chapter, when you may find yourself, as we did, holding the book further away than normal, so as to distance yourself from the grief she pours into the pages. Brilliantly written, heartbreaking, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Not much more you need from a great read, really. Profile Books, R300 • If there was ever anyone as glam as the marvellous Jackie Kennedy Onassis, it was her sister, Lee. One of the most iconic women of her time – and the favourite of their rakish father, John ‘Black Jack’ Vernou Bouvier – she lived in the shadow of her older sister, their mother’s favourite. Both had a keen eye for beauty – in fashion, design, painting, music, dance, sculpture, poetry – and both were talented artists. Both loved prerevolutionary Russian culture. Both adored the blinding sunlight, calm seas and ancient olive groves of Greece. But the two, although extremely close, were hugely competitive and their relationship included much rivalry and jealousy. When Jackie died and her will read, Lee discovered that cash bequests were left to family, friends and staff, but nothing to her. ‘I have made no provision in this my Will for my sister, Lee B. Radziwill, for whom I have great affection, because I have already done so during my lifetime,’ it read. The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger, who had many candid interviews with Lee, explores the tragic and glamorous lives of these two fascinating women. HarperCollins, R310.

HOLIDAY READSRed hot reads for the summer
Christmas is coming. But for Women’s Murder Club, crime never stops. In James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s 19th Christmas, Sergeant Lindsay Boxer is looking forward to spending time with her family over the holidays. But then she receives a tip-off that the biggest heist ever to hit San Francisco is being planned for Christmas Day, and the architect of the ambitious attack unleashes chaos across the city, laying traps and false alarms to distract Lindsay and the SFPD from his ultimate goal. Penguin, R290.
Baby Zephany Nurse hit the headlines when she was kidnapped from beside her mothers hospital bed more than 20 years ago. She hit the headlines again when, by pure chance, her birth parents discovered
she’d been living just a short distance away. Now, in Zephany, written by Joanne Jowell, Miché Solomon tells the often harrowing story of the past four years and her struggles to come to terms with living with two
sets of parents – those who brought her up, who love her and whom she loves and her birth parents who are strangers. Adding to the trauma is the fact that the woman she believed was her mother, ‘who was there
for me every day’ was jailed for the kidnapping. Fortunately, the man she calls Daddy, Michael Solomon, has never wavered in his love and support, which has hugely helped Miché courageously continue to forge ahead in
her efforts to make a success of her life. Tafelberg, R260.
In her new home, Brodie’s Watch, Ava thinks she’s found the perfect place to hide from a past she’s ashamed of. But in The Shape of Night it’s not long before Ava begins to suspect she’s not alone in this house full of secrets. If she’s wrong, then maybe she’s losing her mind. Tess Gerritsen cranks up the suspense ... it’s all haunted houses and handsome ghosts and (phantom) sex. Bantam Press, R290. • Dear Mr Wrexham, I know you don’t know me but please, please, please, you have to help me. Ruth Ware’s The Turn of the Key opens with a young woman begging a barrister for help. Her name is Rowan, and she’s the nanny in the Elincourt case. She says, ‘I didn’t kill that child’. A dream job of live-in nanny with a staggeringly generous salary and a picture-perfect family turns into a nightmare for Rowan, one which ends with a child dead and her in a cell awaiting trial for murder. A murder she swears she’s not responsible for. Described as a gripping modern-day haunted house thriller, this is one you shouldn’t read when you’re at home alone! Harvill Secker, R290.

On Monday, a Manhattan elevator plunges from the topmost fl oor to the bottom of a skyscraper, killing all four people on board. On Tuesday, it happens again. And again on Wednesday. These are obviously not random killings, and New York is plunged into chaos. And what do these deadly acts of sabotage have to do with the fi ngerless body found on the High Line? Linwood Barclay’s Elevator Pitch is a nail-biter of note. And be warned! After you’ve turned the last page, unless your offi ce is on the topmost fl oor, you might be tempted to slog up all those stairs rather than press the button for the lift! HarperCollins UK, R260.
The CEO of a major publishing company dies suddenly at his desk – but was he murdered or did he commit suicide? Senior editor Joelle Jesson – fi red by the CEO just hours before his death – sets out to discover exactly what happened in Steven Boykey Sidley’s Leaving Word. Which of three people could have been involved – a detective and aspirant author, the CEO’s inscrutable brother or a sad and deluded loner? Joelle’s editorial instincts come to the fore in her search for meaning, reason, plot and motive in this literary murder mystery laced with sly, dry wit. MFBooks, R240.
Kelly Ramage pops out to meet a friend on a bitterly cold night – and never comes back. When she’s found murdered in what looks like asex game gone horribly wrong, detectives believe fi nding the killer won’t take long. PJ Tracy (pseudonym for the mother-and-daughter team of PJ and Traci Lambrecht) leadsreaders of Ice Cold Heart on atantalising trail as the search for Kelly’s sinister lover begins to look like the search for a serial killer – who could kill again. Michael Joseph, R290.

All things bright with these summer delightsWish list
The best part about the holidays? Family and friends popping in for a drink, a dinner, an overnight stay. It’s a lovely time of year when we get together with those we love and spend quality time together. What’s the worst part? Not
being prepared. Hello, Chateau Gateaux! We stock up on a few of these amazing frozen cakes at the beginning of the hols, so no matter who pops by, we can defrost, decorate and voila … tea time cake or pudding is served! For a festive-looking cake, we fancy this lovely vanilla dream torte layered with Chantilly cream and topped with white chocolate shavings. Add a handful of strawberries (or whatever you have handy) and tuck in. Other cakes we’re stocking up on for the holidays are the passionate lemon cheesecake (a heavenly combo of passion fruit and lemon on a golden gingerbread crumble base – perfect for when it’s too hot for anything heavy) and the peppermint caramel tart (because – peppermint tart!). Details:
chateaugateaux.co.za. We’ve got a voucher for one reader to win a cake of their choice. Simply like our post
on the Get It Joburg North Facebook page, tag a friend and you’ll be in the draw. Entries close December 10.
Easy holiday entertaining
We’ve found a new fave in trendy MelvilleLet’s give you our suggestions. As you get to your table at The Whippet in Melville – before you even take your seat – order a hibiscus royale. It’s a delicious cocktail that’s as pretty as a picture with hibiscus syrup and fl ower, topped with sparkling wine. After a few refreshing sips, place your order for the steak rosti – it’s a crispy, herb-loaded potato rosti, topped with slices of sirloin steak and a mustard créme fraiche. Best. Lunch. Ever! If you’re there for breakfast, you might opt for the bloedlemoen mimosa with gin, sparkling wine and grapefruit juice (so it’s healthy). Follow that with the breakfast risotto – think mushrooms, bacon and Parmesan topped with a soft-poached egg. Our suggestions aside, we’re quite sure that anything you choose to order at this fabulous spot will please. We’ve oohed over the teriyaki chicken bowl and aahed over the lemon meringue shake. The juicy beef hamburger croquette sandwich got rave reviews and the zucchini fries are out of this world. Whatever you do, on your way out, pick up something scrumptious to take home – korrelkonfyt, grapefruit gin salt or a lovely lemon cordial. Yum! This is defi nitely our new fave spot! Find it on the corner of 4th and 7th avenues in Melville. Details: 061-512-1373.

Lou Harvey certainly puts holiday in our hearts and we’re gushing over her new collection for summer – think Lou’s typical paisley and fl oral prints, merged with turquoise, fuchsia, charcoal, lime green and more! You’ll fi nd the designs across her collection – we’re itching to get our hands on one of these small beach bags that’ll be super-handy for the hols. R760. Details: louharvey.co.za

CelebrateOh yay! The first Nomination store in SA has just opened in Fourways Mall, so of course we were at the glamorous official event to raise a glass! We already love the saying ‘one for me, one for you’, so you can imagine our delight that this is the message of the new Nomination communication strategy. It invites us to connect with others through exchanging links for our Nomination composable bracelets. These links are essentially symbols of love, and they’re very pretty too – some with initials of a name, others with natural diamonds and more! Happy shopping! Details: nomination.com/za-en

Italy isn’t just home for renowned pastry chef Jackie Righi-Boyd – it’s where her heart is too. This heart shows itself in the exquisite pastries and scrumptious Italian dishes available at her two restaurants – Dolci Café, an established Craighall Park gem, and the recently opened Bistro Dolce Vita at the Regency in Sandton. ‘I divide my time between the two – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – luckily I have an incredible team I can rely on,’ she says.
Bistro Dolce Vita boasts Dolci’s greatest hits but not the full menu, so the specials change regularly, ensuring the regulars who pop by are always in for a treat. It’s called ‘Bistro’ for a reason – it’s smaller and more intimate, which extends to the kitchen size as well. Bistro also off ers ‘guest chef’ experiences, recently hosting a French-themed evening while 2020 looks set for some Indian and Asian inspiration. What else is in store for Jackie in 2020?
‘Expansion was what 2019 was about with the opening of Bistro Dolce Vita and 2020 is about consolidation,’ she says. ‘Opening it was just the beginning, now it’s time to nurture it and get everything running as smoothly as possible.’
While classic Italian dishes are a given in both locations, it’s the high tea at Dolci Café that caught our eye. Dolci off ers a 12-piece high tea with sweet and savoury options. These include lemon meringue, chocolate eclairs, cream horns, mini quiches, three-cheese scones and feta-stuff ed zucchini rolls – just for a start! It’s the perfect choice for a special occasion like a kitchen tea or baby shower, but also a lovely
idea for a girlfriends’ catch-up or a memorable date. And you can rest assured you’re in highly trained hands.
Jackie grew up in the kitchens of restaurants as it has always been a family industry. Her famiglia still lives in Italy and she hasn’t lost her Italian roots at all. Feel free to chat with her in broken Italian – she’s fl uent! After trying to cheat destiny for a few years by trying her hand at corporate (following her studies in industrial psychology and human resources), she had an epiphany. ‘I realised I couldn’t do corporate for the rest of my life, so I took an aptitude test and that steered me in the right direction,’ she says.
‘I’ve always loved working with my hands and creating things, so I studied part-time while working at the Food and Beverage Institute in Olivedale, qualifi ed as a pastry chef, then my husband and I packed up our lives and headed to Ravenna, Italy, on the Adriatic coast. It was a return to Italy, as I spent my teenage years there. After we moved, I worked in a little pastry shop and life was like something out of a movie.’
But why the love of pastry (besides the fact that it’s dessert)? ‘I love all Italian cooking but hot kitchens – not so much. I love being able to play with pastry – fi ddle with shapes and sizes and it’s just prettier!’ Her all-time favourite Italian dessert is called zuppa inglese. ‘It’s from the Emiglia Romagna region, where my parents come from and where I went to school. The dessert is made with a very light sponge cake that’s dipped in this gorgeous pink liqueur you can only get in Europe. It’s then layered with chocolate pastry cream
and vanilla pastry cream.’
When it comes to her dream Italian menu, the choice is easy. ‘Antipasto of beautiful, sweet melon with salty Parma ham. Then a cold pasta, made with fusilli or penne, dressed with a gorgeous combination of capers, olives, egg, tuna, cheese and oregano. After that, a delicious fritto misto (a deep fried combination of seafood, including prawns and calamari). And for dessert, you can’t go wrong with gelato.’
Luckily for us, we’ll have the chance to sample both restaurants this December as they’re open all the way through. ‘It’s a time when we see customers who aren’t necessarily regulars, as they don’t live in the area. With the holidays, they have time to venture a bit further so we meet people from broader Johannesburg who’ve heard of us and fi nally have the opportunity to come by.’
December also means gingerbread houses for Jackie. Well, kind of. More like gingerbread castles – limitless, sprawling and coated with icing, sprinkles and glitter! ‘They’re time-consuming but so worth it. Each year I make mine more ornate – I can’t stop myself,’ she says. ‘They’re also easier than gingerbread houses as the pieces don’t have to be so precise in order to fi t together. By using a dummy cake as the base, you can just tag the pieces onto it, going up, branching out, however you fancy!
To say ‘buongiorno’ to Jackie Righi-Boyd and sample some of her sublime pastries and delicious Italian dishes, head to facebook.com/DolciCafeSA and facebook.com/BistroDolceVitaSA.

If you’ve driven around Joburg in recent years, chances are you’ve seen the remarkable work of street artist, Sonny. The iconic elephant facing Newport Road, just off Bolton Road, Parkwood, aptly named Jelani, which means great or powerful, is just one of the Sonny originals that draw viewers in around the country, with others gracing giant canvases world wide.
UK born, but having grown up in South Africa, his work has made his name as an incredible artist as well as an important voice in the world of conservation. But it’s clear he’s so much more than that. ‘I paint street murals as well as canvas work, so people often label me as a street artist, graffiti artist, muralist or contemporary painter. But an artist is pretty much what I am. My recent work has focused on topics such as conservation and environmental issues and I’ve been raising awareness for endangered wildlife, but I don’t think of myself as a conservationist. I just use my art to highlight issues that are important to me.’ While he might not have set out to be a conservationist, murals like Jelani have undoubtedly played a key role in bringing conservation into focus, especially in South Africa. ‘Growing up here, I’ve obviously seen first-hand
the dangers these animals face and the importance of conservation. I was shocked by how many places in the world are shut off to nature and the issues surrounding it. It’s really crazy. Often people battle to name the animal I’m painting, let alone understand the struggles they’re facing. Most of the problems animals or nature face are critical, and many people haven’t the faintest knowledge about them.’
Even when he’s not working to bring a specific issue to light, Sonny’s South African upbringing and love of nature are still key to the direction his work takes. ‘For the most part, nature inspires me. I try to convey the power and majesty of these animals through my paintings, to evoke the feelings I get when I see them in the wild. Living in South Africa has obviously had a massive influence on my work. Nature and friends are really what keep me in South Africa. These days, I travel most of the year with South Africa as my base. If I ever eventually move overseas, I’ll always keep a place here in SA to come back home to.’
No matter where he is, his work manages to reflect Sonny’s ideals, while also taking inspiration from the space around it and creating something truly beautiful – no small
& activismArt
South African street artist Sonny brings together art and activism ...one incredible mural at a time
task when you’re working on giant, challenging canvases. ‘My first ever painting was a mural. I’d always been drawn to street art, so it was a natural progression from indoor murals to the streets. I think a lot of things set street art apart from other forms of art. The process is a lot more intense. It’s a lot more physical and can be pretty mentally straining too, due to time constraints. You also have many elements (weather being a big one) that affect the process – things you don’t have to deal with in a studio. I think the importance for me is the public interaction. People on the street watch the whole process live and interact with you as you paint. They also see the final artwork for years to come, so in a way, it becomes theirs just as much as it’s mine. It’s a very satisfying relationship and I think, as an artist, it’s what makes public art so gratifying.’

Public art has truly earned him global recognition and attention, and today you can see Sonny’s original pieces in cities everywhere from Russia to the USA, Ireland, and England, among others. Through the course of his success, Sonny says travel has definitely been one of the high points.
‘My career highlights are all the places in the world I’ve been lucky enough to see, and the friends I’ve met along the way. I have a global family, so to speak.’ And when it comes to the biggest lessons he’s learnt? ‘There have been so many – but I’d probably say patience and determination.’
As he continues to paint the world in his particular style, Sonny will be constantly working to better himself as an artist – a journey he feels is truly ongoing. ‘This year I’ve started working with oil paints as a way to achieve a certain style I’ve been envisioning for a long time. I’m always working to push my art to a new level and sometimes that means going backwards to go forwards. It’s been a challenging move, but one I feel is finally paying off!’ Details: sonnyonline.com; Facebook @sonnyartist; Instagram @sonnysundancer

You might recognize Bev Courtney’s gorgeous face – we profi led her a few years ago for her landscaping business, Grace’s Glory Garden Renovation. Her talent for enhancing natural beauty was redirected to the salon industry in 2017, revamping an existing salon and breathing new life into the space. Grace Skin and Wellness has thrived in the past two years, so much so that an expansion into the hair industry was possible. Meet Money to Blow, the fi nal piece of the puzzle to make the Grace-space a one-stop beautifying shop to meet every single one of your aesthetic needs.
‘I love creating beauty and seeing confi dence bloom in women after spending some time with us,’ Courtney says. A quick glance through the Facebook reviews of Grace Skin and Wellness tells you all you need to know: a fl awless fi ve-star rating and countless women gushing over not only how incredible the treatments are but how welcoming the atmosphere is. We’ve just joined their ranks – it’s hard not to, after spending a morning with the team. Clients become family in this haven nestled in Benmore Gardens where your treatments take place in tucked-away rooms and converted Wendy houses decorated with peonies, roses and gorgeous green foliage. It’s easy to forget you were sitting in Sandton traffi c just a few minutes ago.
While at fi rst this may seem like just another salon, you need to look closer. Yes, there’s an incredible array of options for waxes, manicures and pedicures, a plethora of facials and peels to choose from and some magical massage off erings, but there’s so much more available. Lash lifts and extensions complement the microblading on off er. ‘Vampire facials’, as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facials have been nicknamed, are readily available, with a dedicated on-site nurse as an assistant to your aesthetician. Plasma lifting treatments off er surgery-free anti-ageing options, while the V-facial and O-shot focus on sexual rejuvenation. ‘It’s an equally important but often neglected aspect of women’s wellness,’ Courtney explains. ‘It’s been incredibly popular, as is the cellulite cupping which delivers amazing results. It’s defi nitely an ideal summer treatment.’
Last but certainly not least, the salon has welcomed on board a qualifi ed doctor specialising in aesthetic treatments. Dr Matheo de Villiers has solutions for anyone looking for aesthetic enhancement and more ‘invasive’ anti-ageing measures, such as Botox, fi llers, peptide treatments and more. He takes PRP treatment to the next level, describing the process as being benefi cial due to its multi-faceted use. ‘One can treat hair loss and ageing skin, joint and tendon injuries, erectile dysfunction and painful intercourse in women, and it’s quick, minimally invasive, practically painless and leads to amazing results. What’s not to love?’
With so many options, it’s easy to get lost in the choices available. We took the guesswork out of the equation by creating some combinations for our readers. These are just some of the treatments available at Grace Skin and Wellness and Money to Blow.

If you want your outside to match the age you feel inside...
• Facial and peel. Based on your skin’s needs, choose from Nimue, Lamelle and Academie. If you’re at a loss, it’s okay – your aesthetician will recommend the best fit for your skin.
• PRP facial. Platelet-rich plasma facials involve the extraction of a small amount of your blood which is processed so the ‘good stuff’ can be microneedled into your skin, stimulating the production of collagen which, in time, creates that ‘younger look’. SQ.
• Plasma treatment. Fibroblast skin tightening uses an incredibly accurate pen which creates a plasma charge to reduce the volume of excess skin. This small electrical arc shrinks the skin, resulting in visible anti-ageing results without surgery and with minimal downtime. From R1800.
For all your beauty needs, follow @graceskinandwellness and @moneytoblow.sa and keep an eye out for the monthly specials.
Been invited to a special occasion?
• Dermaplaning. A scalpel is applied gently to the face, removing all vellus/peach-fuzz hair and performing a light exfoliation of the uppermost layer of skin, resulting in better product absorption for facials and make-up that glides on as if you’re a baby dolphin. From R580.
• Make-up. Get a full face make-up with @_allynicole_ or opt for a make-up lesson with her so you can DIY your make-up next time! From R750.
• Hair treatment and blow-dry. Choose from a range of planet-friendly products and have your hair styled by the pros. Be inventive by taking inspirational pictures with you for a gorgeous up-style. If you’re not pushed for time, why not opt for a trim and some highlights? New braids? A weave wash? The stylists can do it all. Te

Summer’s when we indulge in good food, refreshing wine, yummy treats and try out some really great recipes
FUN FOODIE
A perfect pairing We’re celebrating this summer
with prawns and bubbly ... a combo that’s fun, light and full of pizzazz to
get you in the holiday spirit. We were invited to experience Ocean Basket’s
Summer Prawn Extravaganza at the Good Food Studio in the On Nicol Shopping Centre.
The lovely Ocean Basket team just burst with passion and love for what they do ... and they
took us on a Mediterranean journey, pairing their brand new summer menu with Prosecco. The bubbly
flowed and, for a quick, mouth-watering snack, we bit into bruschetta with panko prawn ... a great light option.
We followed this with a refreshing prawn cocktail salad for starters. Mmm. Our taste buds were delighted with some of the different Proseccos. Here’s the rundown of what we learnt ... an appealing, easy-to-drink and great party-starter is La Delizia Prosecco (Xdry). Watching your waistline? Enjoy an intense flavour? You can’t go wrong with Giusti Asolo DOCG (Brut). Pair these with prawns? Yes, please! To appreciate the art of prawns, we were asked to prep and fry our very own Ocean Basket king prawns, made just as they would be at one of the many outlets – with the help of the OB team. We were hooked! With beautifully firm, juicy-textured prawns all round, it was truly a prawn extravaganza. We can’t wait to try some of the other summer menu options at Ocean Basket ... think sushi with sweet prawns or try the romesco prawns served with a rich tomato-based romesco sauce and topped with creamy feta. Summer’s sorted with bubbles and tastes from the ocean. Details: oceanbasket.co.za Tips to prepare king prawns (with heads) this summer:• Rinse under cold water • Place them in a bowl of water• Cut along the back of the hard shell all the way to the end of the tail• Devein • Squeeze the head to remove black matter present, rinse again• Butterfly the prawn and rub with your preferred seasoning• Add olive oil to a pan and wait for it to heat up• Fry on both sides for 1 to 2 minutes until pink.
DELIGHTS
If you, like us, relish the Mediterranean way of eating ... everyone tucking into breads and dips, tapas and salads, gorgeous roasts and seafoods ... you’re going to want a copy of the gorgeous – GORGEOUS, we tell you – Cape Mediterranean by Ilse van der Merwe. This Stellenbosch-based foodie says ‘In South Africa, especially the Western Cape, we love the culture of lingering, social lunch tables. We savour coming together to celebrate local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients’. Fortunately you don’t have to live in the Cape to make, and enjoy, the dishes in her book ... Winelands grape pizza bianca with feta and thyme will taste just as good in Ballito, Bo-Kaap harissa paste will be yummy in Bloem, and Cape seafood stew will go down a treat in Sandton. There are more than 75 amazing recipes that most of us will manage with ease. There are recipes here we’ll make again and again ... this is without doubt our hot buy for spring and summer. Struik, R280.

Orange lollies recipe(Makes 4 x 85ml ice lollies)Juice of 5 - 6 large oranges (roughly 500ml); a squeeze of fresh lime juice(Note: You will need 4 x 85ml ice lolly moulds and fl at lolly sticks)Mix the fresh orange juice with the squeeze of fresh lime juice, tasting and adjusting to your liking. Pour into lolly moulds until each one is 3/4 full. Place moulds upright in the freezer for about an hour before pushing sticks into each mould. Freeze for a further 3 hours or preferably overnight. Remove moulds from freezer and briefl y dip them into hot water, then gently pull lollies out of the moulds and serve immediately.(Recipe from Jude’s Ice Cream & Desserts)
Ice cream anyone? If the answer’s ‘yes, yes, yes’ then grab a copy of Jude’s Ice Cream & Desserts. From simple, refreshing treats (orange lollies) and sorbets like mango and passion fruit or summer peach, to fl uff y buttermilk pancakes with roasted apple, toasted oats and ice cream, there’s temptation on every page – dig in and enjoy! The many ice cream variations (Earl Grey; beetroot and ginger – yes, really!) include several for vegans, but it’s the desserts we fancy most. How about cinnamon pavlova with winter fruit; Julia’s double chocolate brownies or, by far our fave ... collapsed espresso chocolate cake, served with ice cream. Yes, yes, yes! From shakes and smoothies to sauces and DIY cones, when deliciousness calls, this is the book you need. Kyle Books, R378.
Low alcohol. Low calories. Great taste. What’s not to love? This summer we’re being sensible. We’re still celebrating everything summer has
to off er with lovely wines, but we’re choosing those with lighter alcohol levels and fewer calories. Without, obviously, sacrifi cing quality or taste.
First on our list to try is the Robertson Winery Light Cultivar range, which is showing off great new design, too. With around 9 per cent alcohol instead of the
average 12 or 13 per cent, there’s a Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (refreshing, dry, zesty, about R55), a Chenin Blanc 2019 (off -dry, all yellow apple, pear and fl oral notes, around R55); a Pinotage Rosé (a beautiful pale coral off -dry rosé), and a Merlot
(think ripe plum and sweet black cherry fl avours). All around R50 to R55. Details: robertsonwinery.co.za

The weather’s fi ne and the garden’s calling ... showing off in shades of sunshine yellow, hot pink and eye-catching orange
summer days
Tasks for December and January
Going on holiday?
• Water early morning or late afternoon, to minimise evaporation.• Lightly mulch beds to keep plants’ roots cool and moist for longer • In hot, dry weather, don’t cut the lawn too low. Leaving it longer shades the roots. • Trim off dead fl owers to encourage new fl owers. • Fertilize annuals and perennials with an organic granular fertilizer in mid-December
If your garden will be watered less, or not at all, while you’re away, here are some survival tips:• Don’t fertilise at all … you don’t want to encourage new growth which needs more water. • Spread a 1 to 2cm layer of mulch over the soil to conserve moisture. • Place pots and container plants in the shade or on saucers so they can use any excess water. • Pinch off all buds and new growth on roses. This also saves water. • Spray roses with Ludwig’s Insect Spray and Chronos (a fungicide) to repel pests and prevent black spot while you’re away. • Check the automatic irrigation and unblock any spray nozzles so all the plants receive water. • After holidays away, don’t mow the overgrown lawn too low. Reduce the height of the lawn gradually over two or three mowings so it doesn’t burn.
For those of you who, like us, keep a gardening diary, this one in a brand new, jolly pretty fl oral design from Macaroon is perfect. R300. And for your rose shears and herb scissors … a gorgeous matching printed canvas bag … love that it’s personalised, so no-one can take your tools. R350. Details: macaroon.co.za

Impatiens Clockwork is a pot impatiens (Impatiens hawkerii) with a wide colour range, including the two-tone Pink Star and Orange Stripe. Great for instant colour indoors and in pots or hanging baskets on the patio, as the plants have the ideal compact growth for pots, (25cm high and 30cm wide). Plant in a good quality potting mix, with a controlled release fertilizer and if your pot is indoors, the best position is in bright light. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. For patios, place in a position with morning sun or dappled sunshine. Water pots once a day in midsummer and feed with a liquid fertilizer once a month. Details: ballstraathof.co.za

Garden gurus share their expertise
A fi esta of colour for the festive season. Hot pink, fi ery fuchsia, sizzling orange and knockout yellow are the colours of the samba, the rumba and Portulaca Nano, the gorgeous, heat-loving groundcover that’s always smothered with fl owers. Although not indigenous, it’s extremely drought- and heat-tolerant, and able to keep fl owering through times of low rainfall. The plants do best in full sun and grow in ordinary garden soil. The fl owers open early in the morning, creating a ball of colour well into the evening. It’s an easy-to-care-for summer annual that will perform as a perennial in frost-free areas. Use it as a garden groundcover or on pavements, in hanging baskets and window boxes and as a ’spiller’ in mixed containers. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Veggies and fruit. Nuts and herbs. Spices and edible fl owers. There’s a massive trend globally towards growing your own … and Grow Your Own is a hugely comprehensive, practical guide. Written by two well-respected South African garden gurus, JJ van Rensburg and Tinus Oberholzer, this book really does cover absolutely everything you need to know, presented in a style that will please beginners as well as those with more established green thumbs. A great gift for a gardening friend. Briza, R350. • Keith Kirsten and horticulture are inseparable. Happily, his best-known book, Gardening with Keith Kirsten, fully revised and updated, has just hit the shelves … perfectly timed for Christmas. In recognition of the importance of gardening in harmony with nature, this fourth edition has more info on indigenous species, locally-bred hybrids and waterwise plants. In addition to sections on garden design, maintenance, as well as dealing with pests and diseases, the bulk of the book consists of directories with comprehensive details about growing more than 2000 plants (trees, shrubs, creepers ... you name it). It’s the prefect pressie for a garden enthusiast – or you could treat yourself! Struik Lifestyle, R350.
Plant spekboom for cleaner air Hectare for hectare, spekboom removes10
times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than the Amazon rain forest. With the invasive borer beetle destroying
Jozi’s trees, perhaps it’s time to plant this indigenous, waterwise, eco-friendly
succulent. It’s extremely easy to grow and makes a splendid hedge
