ABOUT YEAR 7 ENRICHMENT WEEK
Enrichment Week is an integral part of the curriculum and students must participate as all normal lessons are suspended during this time. Activities are designed to be inspiring and enjoyable, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves, try new skills and make new friends with students who share similar interests. You will find a brief description of all the activities on offer in this booklet, along with the costs. More details will be provided when places have been allocated and bookings with outside providers have been confirmed. Students will be offered a place on an activity, trying to accommodate their first choice. If the activity is over subscribed, names will be selected in no particular order and without prejudice to fill the number of places available.
All students who are not allocated their first choice, will be offered an alternative based upon their second and third choices. These students will automatically be placed on the waiting list for their first choice.
There are a variety of different priced activities and trips however as I am sure you will appreciate, when we bring in external providers to work with students, or go on trips
there are costs involved.
It is essential that the deadlines for returning Choices forms and payments are strictly adhered to. Tickets will not be purchased if payment has not
been received on ParentPay by the deadline.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: If your family is eligible for Pupil Premium funding please indicate on the Choices page that you would like to use it towards the cost of activities. If you would like to apply for exceptional financial assistance, i.e. you are not in receipt of either free school meals or Child Tax Credit please contact the Student Services office. INSURANCE:

Return the completed form to Student Services no later than Friday 19 January. Forms returned after this date will not have the first choices considered as a priority.
Letters will be given to students giving details of the TWO activities that they have been allocated.
These activities will be made available on ParentPay.
Deposit payment for the Year 7 Non Residential must be made by Friday 9 February
Payments for Choice A must be made by Friday 9 February.

Payments may not be accepted after these dates.
A packed lunch and plenty of fluids will be required on all day trips, unless otherwise stated.
School uniform is not necessary during Enrichment Week. Suitable footwear and clothing for the activity must be worn.
Bring a raincoat if the weather is unsettled. Bring sun cream and a hat if the weather is good. Mobile phones and electronic devices should not be
taken on the trips. Some of the trips depart early and arrive back late.
This is stated with details for the day. Coaches will not wait for late comers.
The school website and school Twitter page will be updated with any delays.
Please do not pick a trip with a late return on Friday, if you are constrained by time. Sadly, we cannot predict the traffic.
School transport will run as normal including the late bus at 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday.
The school dining room will be open as normal for activities in school.
Students entitled to Free School Meals will be provided with a packed lunch for trips taking place in normal school hours.
Nearer the time there will be meetings in school for the students to meet with their Activity Leaders.

Year 7 Base Backwell Non–Residential MONDAY - THURSDAY
Available to Year 7 students only
Year 7 Base Backwell is a broad enrichment opportunity that encompasses a range of fun activities aimed to be stimulating and exciting. Each day you will take part in a different theme, either in school or on a day trip. What does this include? Theatre: The nationally acclaimed Travelling Light Theatre will be coming into school. Their mission is to create outstanding theatre with young people that inspires their thinking, engages their emotions and fires their imaginations. By the end of the day you will have created and performed in a “Play in a Day” with your friends. Animals: Visit “The Wild Place” project to discover the work being carried out in conservation. You will enjoy nature with a number of outdoor adventures, discovering wildlife from the UK and around the world on the themed trails. Walk with the lemurs, gaze up at the giraffes, but don’t trust the cheetahs! Outdoor Adventure: High ropes, Leap of Faith, assault course, team games and a woodland rally. All good character building stuff whist being great fun and a lot of laughs. Art: Spend the day with a comic book genius learning the skills needed to draw for comics like the Beano. Learn how to draw your comic hero or maybe caricatures of yourself. You will be amazed by how much your skills will improve in a day. Picnics: take a rest from the busy activities with a picnic in the beautiful leafy woods at Goblin Coombe. We will also pick the perfect spot to stop for lunch in the wild when on the animal adventure.
Cost £80 for the four days To confirm your child place you will be required to pay the first instalment of £40 by Friday 9 February. You are then able to pay the second instalment of £40 by Friday 9 March. The Friday Fun Day payment can be extended until Friday 13 April. Please note that there must be a minimum of 25 students for the Year 7 non-residential to take place.

Three Day Courses
The following courses will run from Monday 11 June - Wednesday 13 June. The whole of Year 8 take part in the three day courses, however they are open to students in Year 7 and Year 9 taking part in Base Backwell. If you choose to take part in a three day course, you will automatically take part in Community Day on Thursday 14 June. What is Community Day? This may be within our school or the surrounding areas. It is about you, the student, thinking about where you live and go to school, and giving something back. It is about you recognising your role as a citizen in our educational community and playing your part. Year 7’s taking part will meet before Enrichment Week to decide what you are going to do as a group. Preparation for Community Day will take place in school.
PERFORMING ARTS Is this for me? Do you want to be a performer, a director or a dancer?
Then you should put on your theatrical shoes and enjoy a challenging
but fun week.
Launch into two days of creating, rehearsing and performing your
very own show. Culminating in a performance in front of a live
audience on Wednesday morning.
In the afternoon, it will be a trip to Bristol Hippodrome to see
Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of the legendary
musical, Miss Saigon. Set in the last days of the Vietnam War, 17 year-
old Kim is forced to work in a Saigon bar where she meets and falls in
love with an American GI named Chris. However, they are torn apart
by the fall of Saigon and Kim must go on an epic journey to find her
way back to Chris, who has no idea he’s fathered a son.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Do you want to move away from ‘snapping’ and let your photographs become art? Phil Hibberd, an acclaimed professional photographer, has generously agreed to run this course to inspire your photography. Enjoy a day out on a photo shoot, at Tyntesfield, which will be based around specific themes which you will discuss and agree beforehand to make sure you get the most from your day. You will also select and edit photos, and the course will culminate in an exhibition of your work. You will learn all about your camera, and how to get the best out of it. During this fun, three day course you will learn about depth of field, aperture, shutter, ISO, white balance and composition.
Start to take photographs in a more creative way, and be taught how to photograph with 'intention'.

If you are an animal lover you will definitely enjoy this interactive activity.
Monday - The North Somerset Birds of Prey Centre will be visiting school for a hands on flying experience with their magnificent creatures. Owls, hawks and falcons! The birds will be flown on the school field where you will be given the chance to hold them. This will be followed by an afternoon with Edupets who will bring in a range of creatures and critters for you to hold, cuddle and learn about. Mr and Mrs Palmer are good friends of Backwell School and have been delighting us with their amazing animals each year. Tuesday - A Visit to The Wild Place where there will be a Learning with Lemurs workshop and then an up close experience with the animals as you walk amongst the park. Wednesday - Visit Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucestershire. There is plenty to discover. Enjoy amazing wildlife up-close at this award winning centre. Workshop included.
This is definitely the chance to get up close and learn about the
wonderful creatures that we are privileged to share our planet with.
Magic of Animals £53
Is this for me? Do you love music? Do you fancy spending some time be-
ing a Rock musician?
With the expertise of our Backwell School Music Depart-ment, you will be divided into bands and guided through the song writing/learning process. You will have two days to practice and perfect your song before heading out on
the Wednesday to perform on a stage!
ACTION ADVENTURE
If you like being outdoors, challenging yourself and trying new experiences then this is a great opportunity to find your sense of adventure and develop new skills. By the end of the three days you will have a great sense of achievement and be proud of what you have accomplished during this high energy adventure. There will be an adrenalin pumping day at the Cannington
Activity Centre. Here you will find the state of the arts high and low rope facilities. The day will be about challenging yourself to complete the daring courses but also about team building as well as learning life skills.
Enjoy a fun packed day near Leigh woods with Clifton College Activity Centre leaders, tackling a variety of activities including bush-craft survival, trebuchet building, archery and exploring a woodland sensory trail. This will involve you using skill and keeping your wits about you in order to complete the challenges.
Spend the day in the grounds of Blaise Castle. Exploring the castle and having fun in the parks and woodlands, whilst keeping an eye out for Goram, the legendary Blaise giant. This day is full of fun and laughs, a little bit of mayhem and probably mud!

Fashion & Beauty Is this for me? Get beauty and fashion tips from the professionals and learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
A trip to Bath Fashion Museum dedicated to just that; Fashion! Enjoy a workshop focusing on the fine detail of manipulating fashion. Explore the displays, make drawings and take photographs to identify key shapes and structure. From these research activities you will develop your own fabric manipulation technique samples. Whilst in Bath you may also get a chance to explore one or two of the shops. Emma Young, founder of Love Skin Academy, will start the day with a healthy skin food smoothie demo and tasting, and will then teach you the secrets of making highly effective and beautiful skincare products. She will also teach you how to use the products, skincare routines, what to do to improve your skin, what to eat for better skin and what to avoid. There will be a day of relaxation; Yoga in the morning with an external instructor, mindfulness and craft activities to follow with a visit in the afternoon from a beauty industry expert.

We are excited to have on offer three exciting days that will embrace technology, science, robots and programming!
Zobotics, a cutting edge technology company, will spend a day in school and introduce you to building and programming robots. The day will come to a spectacular end with Robot Wars! High tech and high drama in one day.
Zobotics’ workshops are a fun way for students to see the world of robots; you will learn and discuss what robots are and look at current developments in the industry. Of course you will also get stuck in with building and programming real robots!
You will learn about the European Space Agency’s Aurora Mission and the ExoMars rover programme during the Earth to Mars workshop at We the Curious in Bristol. It will be a busy day, starting with a Planetarium show about Mars, followed by Python training exercises and finishing off the day with programming a newly developed robot rover using the knowledge you have gained throughout the day.
Mad Science day will involve hands on activities in all areas of Science and will be unlike any science lesson you’ve ever experienced! With flashes, bangs and Bunsen burners, dissections and bone-shaking earthquakes. This day will round off iScience sensationally!
Is this for me? If you love cooking, are keen to learn new skills and explore the world of food, then you will really enjoy Cool Cooks. The week will begin with a visit from the talented chefs at Square Food Foundation. They deliver fun, hands-on, informative, sociable, and above all, delicious courses and workshops to students and we have invited them into school to spend one of the days with you. You will prepare a three course meal that you will then sit down at lunch time and enjoy (there should be enough to take some home too). Under the professional eye of Mrs Duggan, our favourite cookery tutor, you will spend the day baking and decorating a show stopper cake. Mrs Duggan will teach you the tricks of the trade including her expertise in sugarcraft. You will be amazed by the professional results you will achieve under Mrs Duggan’s direction. Another special visit into school will be from Little Kitchen. They have an exciting two course meal planned with a Mexican theme. You will prepare every aspect from scratch and then sit down together to enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Get creative by telling stories through different forms of media during this three day course. This course is about developing and sharing new skills in a relaxed and fun filled atmosphere. You will spend a day with Animation Nation in school. Using your own storyboard, you will work in groups to produce an animated film using characters and props that you will make out of modelling clay. Animation Nation will provide all of the specialist equipment and software that you will need to bring your ideas and imagination to life. Tuesday morning will be fun-filled with Drama followed by an afternoon spent touring BBC Bristol and learning about how television and radio programmes are created. You will also have the chance to visit the interactive studio where you can have a go at presenting the news and weather, and star in your own radio drama, complete with sound effects! SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA If you are mad about sport, you will thoroughly enjoy this action
packed, energy driven course of activities. The three days will focus on sporting activities that you may not take part in at school or in clubs. It is about packing as many sports into four days as possible. Some of the sports will be led by teachers from school and some will be taken by experts from the sporting world. This week is about the sports and learning new skills but it is also about taking part in a sportsman like fashion. Learning to encourage your team mates, appreciating the skills of your opponent, always taking part to the best of your ability and when necessary being a good loser. What sports might you expect to take part in? There will be a variety of sports for you to try and these might include Cricket, Rounders, Basketball, Softball, Danish long ball, Archery, Swimming, Table Tennis, Squash, Bowls, Disc Golf and Football! The actual sports and your timetable will be confirmed nearer the time.
You don’t have to be great at sport but you do need to be willing to have a
go at everything. Expect to have a great time!

This is your chance to visit Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. An amazing opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter™ films – the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. Try the adrenaline-fuelled, indoor, simulated surf machine at the Cardiff International White Water centre, located in the heart of the International Sports Village in Cardiff. You will also have the chance to race in Bell Boats with your friends on the Flat Water course. All coaching and specialist equipment is provided. You will just need to bring £1 for a locker! Minimum height for Indoor Surfing is 3ft 6 inches. Depart Backwell School at 9am and return to school at approx. 5pm.

Let your imagination go wild as you design your own crazy creature from clay. Learn how to surface mark, sculpt, mould and manipulate the material to come up with your own unique sculpture. Crazy Creatures will then be fired in school for collection in September.

Start the day off at Redpoint Climbing Centre on their action packed climbing area; Crazy Climb! There are 20+ challenges to try, all with their own unique style. From flashy light up volcanoes to teetering towers, there is something for everyone! During the afternoon you will spend two hours at City Mazes trying to escape two very different rooms with your team. This activity will take place within school hours.

Two games of bowling where you can try out your skills of accuracy and speed! You will then fuel up with a meal at Hollywood Bowl before walking to AirHop for two hours of bouncing mania (socks included). Flips, flops and the wipe out zone are all there to be conquered!
Students will only be able to jump at AirHop if a waiver has been completed by a parent/carer. Further details to follow.

The cool choice of how to spend your fun day at the UK’s premier real snow centre. Real snow, all year round, provides the ultimate surface to learn how to ski! You will spend two hours skiing and one hour ice skating. No experience is necessary and the centre aim to group students by ability. Enjoy the wild animals in the four mile drive-through safari trail and discovery zones. Watch the Sea Lion show or the Hippos being fed by the lake before enjoying a bit of Meerkat mayhem. Discover the African Village and Penguin Cove before daring to enter the Land of the Living Dinosaurs. Before leaving there will be time to enjoy the Adventure Theme Park. Try out the Venom tower Drop, “Venom will transport you gradually onwards and upwards reaching the dizzy heights of 30 metres.
