Jaguar XJ Supersport gets the gas mileage one would expect from a truck.
Behind the Wheel
By ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATED PrESS
The 2011 Jaguar XJ Super-sport sedans are powerful, decadent — and get the kind of gasoline mileage expected from a pickup truck. A very big pickup truck.
In fact, at today’s fuel prices, it can cost upwards of $75 to fill the tank of a new, four-door, four-pas-senger, supercharged Jag XJ. Evidently, pampered luxu-ry, supercharged V-8 power and heady oil consumption remain in style even in trou-bled economic times.
Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, is $73,575 for a base, 2011 XJ sedan with naturally aspi-rated, 385-horsepower V-8.
But the supercharged models are the stars of the line, and they cost more. A 2011 XJ with supercharged V-8 starts at $88,575 with 470 horsepower. The top supercharged XJ generates 510 horses from its V-8 and starts at $111,075.
For buyers looking for more room in the back seat,
the XJ is sold in long-wheel-base trim as XJL models with the same engine choic-es. Starting retail price for a 2011 XJL, which is some 5
inches longer than a regu-lar-wheelbase XJ, is $80,575.
Competitors include other European, large, luxury se-dans such as the 2011 Audi A8, which has a starting re-tail price of $78,925 with naturally aspirated, 372-horsepower V-8, and the 2011 Mercedes-Benz S550, which starts at $94,525 with naturally aspirated 382-horsepower V-8.
Newly restyled, the 2011 XJ sedans move away from the somewhat stodgy ap-pearance of their predeces-sors. And the look is garner-ing awards and attention. Bloomberg News named the XJ the Executive Sedan of the Year, while Automobile magazine noted it as a De-sign of the Year.
Still, I wasn’t impressed by the mesh silver-colored grille on the test car — a reg-ular-wheelbase XJ Supers-port with 510-horsepower V-8.It made the front end look a little too much like the much cheaper Chrys-ler 300 sedans with mesh

All About Cars tradition-ally ends its yearly coverage with two Top-10 lists. Last week, we awarded our Car Buy of the Year crown to the all-new Cadillac CTS Coupe. This week, we pres-ent our Car of the Year list, focusing on the best car, truck, crossover or SUV and what it delivers, regardless of price — just the pure ve-hicle.
To make this list, I must have test driven the car in calendar 2010 and it must have dazzled me as well as any passengers or onlook-ers who rode in or saw the vehicle.
I test drove 55 different vehicles this year, and after a weeklong (in most cases) examination as a daily driv-er and/or track car, I graded each ride in the following categories: Interior; Safe-ty; Power; Handling/Ride; Economy/Price; Looks; Niche-fitting and a Miscel-laneous grouping in which I took into consideration the “feel-good” factor and other intangibles. Each cat-egory had its own integri-ty and encompassed such items as driver intuitive-ness, comfort, easy-to-read instrumentation, quietness and ease of surroundings in the Interior segment, and crash-test results, standard air bags, crumple zones and construction in the safe-ty subset. In each catego-ry, I award from zero to 10 points (10 being perfect). This year, only eight 10s were handed out.
W h i l e cos t i s n o o b -ject here, the highest price doesn’t necessarily equate to the best car, as many times a $50,000 car will beat a $100,000 car based on the above criteria. This year, a $111,000 vehicle won the competition, but Nos. two and three are priced at under $40,000 and under $50,000 respectively. Four Top-10 cars were priced under $40,000.
Last year’s winner was a nostalgic Muscle Car — the Chevrolet Camaro SS and this year another American muscle and sports icon re-turned to capture the title, narrowly defeating a retro street machine and another American automotive sym-bol.
(Prices below are price-as-tested totals including options and destination
charges: tax and license are extra, and you might be able to purchase a less-tricked out model for less).
Here are the top 10 cars of the year:
No. 1 Corvette ZR-1 —$111,525
European supercars are priced in the $400,000s and America’s supercar is one-fourth the sticker, but is imbued with all the style and substance. The ZR-1 is the most powerful pro-duction car ever offered by Corvette at 638 horse-power and 604 lbs-ft of torque. Fast (zero-to-60 in 3.8 seconds and a 12.3-sec-ond quarter-mile),with an exotic exterior, lavish high-tech cockpit, top safety at-tributes and pride behind the wheel, ZR-1 wins this race hands down. Also con-sidered part of this year’s Corvette experience (and it could also have made this list on its own) is its sib-ling, Corvette Grand Sport, which made a triumphant return after a 14-year ab-sence. At $65,730, with 430hp and 424 lbs-ft of torque, Grand Sport’s wide fenders, functional split-ter on the hood, tall rear spoiler and fender vents on both sides are classic as are its power, grace and histo-ry. ZR-1 scored 10s in Pow-er, Handling and Feel good Factor.
No. 2 Dodge Challenger R/T — $35,755
Maybe I am partial to dy-namic revisiting of Ameri-ca’s muscle cars, but Chal-lenger stands the test of time and the test of a new automotive world. Brought back 40 years after its Hemi-powered, tire-smok-ing debut, the new Chal-lenger incorporates old-school street machine looks and impressive muscle (376 hp and 410 lbs-ft of torque).
No. 3 Cadillac CTS Coupe — $48,940
The CTS Coupe was also
on last week’s list, reigning as Top Car Buy of the Year. With classic hardtop styl-ing, 304hp /273 lbs-ft of torque, 18/27 mpg, elegant cabin and impressive safety additions, the all-new CTS Coupe is driving Cadillac back to prominence.
No. 4 Porsche Panamera — $95,600Porsche’s first all-new
vehicle since 2002 is a lightning-fast luxury car that seats four and throati-ly thunders out 400hp/369 lbs-ft of torque. Displays 911 styling and perfor-mance and a packed inte-rior.
No. 5 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT — $37,277
Rekindling the 5.0 look and feel from 1985-1995, the new 5.0 GT is built for looks, speed, performance, handling and fuel economy, galloping out 412 horses and 390 lbs-ft. of torque.
No. 6 Jaguar XF —$62,875
Refined-yet-liquid lines, mesh grille, Cat logo, gen-tly sculptured roofline and interior and performance ( 3 8 5 - h p /3 8 0 l bs - f t o f torque) that growls out the
Jaguar legacy.
No. 7 Nissan 370Z Roadster — $38,980The Z-tradition lives on
with 332 hp, 270 lb-ft of torque, roadster appear-ance and demeanor and re-sponsive driving fun.
No. 8 Audi S4 — $60,550
Euro styling, 333hp and 325 lbs. of torque, direct fuel injection, sticky auto-cross capabilities and ac-commodating cabin.
No. 9 Infiniti M37 —$59,460
Sleek, athletic, sporty, graceful and aggressive. Luxurious interior and lots of power (330hp/270 lbs-ft of torque).
No. 10 Chevrolet Camaro Synergy
— $28,185Really a Camaro in Green
with additional cosmetics, this nostalgic muscle car still wows on the road with 304 hp/273 lbs-ft of torque and 18mpg in the city/29mpg in
highway driving. These Top 10 were the
cream of the crop in 2010, combining looks, style, per-formance and pride of own-ership and driving. We can’t wait to see and drive the four-wheeled masterpieces offered in 2011.

grilles that car customizers install.
The XJ sedan’s rear end was more distinctive. It’s not a boattail, but the way the trunk metal is tucked down between the bright, light-emitting diode tail lamps is intriguing.
Sitting low to the pave-m e n t , t h e te s t Ja g u a r XJ conveyed power and strength, right down to its big, 20-inch wheels and tires. And the visual cues were backed up by the per-formance of the 5-liter, double overhead cam, su-percharged V-8 under the long hood.
One push of the accelera-tor pedal, and my body was pressed into the seatback. The car seemed to jet for-ward with noticeable ease.
The car’s throttle was touchy, so much so that slight pressure on the ac-celerator could move the vehicle swiftly out of the garage. I spent days learn-ing how to modulate the power. It just could come on so quickly — I’d be up over the speed limit in resi-dential areas before I knew it, or riding the rear bumper of a vehicle in front of me.
No wonder. A full 461 foot-pounds of torque comes on by a low 2,500 rpm and continues to 5,500 rpm.
On highways, the power just kept coming. I nev-er had a moment when I thought the XJ was strain-ing or topping out. Note that top speed is electroni-cally limited to 155 miles an hour, and zero-to-60-mph
time is less than 5 seconds, which is sports car range.
Gasoline consumption was fierce, too. I managed 16 miles per gallon in the test drive in combined city/highway driving.
The federal government’s rating for the XJ Supersport model that I had is 15 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway — similar to a Ram pickup truck — and the government notes that the car uses premium gaso-line. With a truck-like 21.7-gallon tank, the cost for a fill-up isn’t cheap.
Still, for a car that’s al-most 17 feet long, the XJ handled well. Body motions were controlled, though passengers felt road vibra-tions nearly all the time.
Driver and passengers in the test XJ rested easily on leather-trimmed seats. But everyone rode close to the pavement, so views out were mostly blocked by taller vehicles.
The car’s interior has luxury touches, include a dashboard swathed in leather. But carpeting didn’t seem to be as plush as in older XJs.
I was surprised that the car’s key fob was the heaviest in weight that I
could recall of any vehicle out there. It weighted 3.5 ounces compared with 1.5 ounces for a key fob for a 2011 Ford Edge sport utility vehicle.
It was bigger in over-all size, too, and overall, seemed clunky.
Also surprising was the electronic instrument pan-el. The area in front of the steering wheel was black and bare at first, then would fill with what appeared to be fake gauges.
They worked fine, though the gauge needles some-times looked as if they were moving artificially, and they were.
Maybe this was supposed to convey a high-tech im-age, but wouldn’t some-thing more akin to a fine watch fit better?
I even laughed when I saw a graphic pop up on the in-strument panel that high-lighted which passenger didn’t have his seat belt on. The graphic was similar to ones found at airline Inter-net sites where passengers select their seats. It seemed out of place in this Jaguar.
There’s little liftover to get items in the trunk, which has a roomy 18.4 cu-bic feet of space.

WASHINGTON — South Korean automakers Hyun-dai and Kia and German car maker Volkswagen lead the insurance industry’s annual list of the safest new vehi-cles, used by safety minded consumers looking to buy a new car.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized 66 vehicles on Wednes-day with its “top safety pick award” for the 2011 model year, the most-ever awarded by the Virginia-based group. The number was more than double the 27 vehicles se-lected last year.
Hyundai Motor Corp. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp., and Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand received the most awards with nine, fol-lowed by eight awards apiece by General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Mo-tor Corp. The awards, used in advertising to attract car buyers, bolster Hyundai and Volkswagen as they attempt to build a larger foothold in the United States.
Hyundai’s Genesis sedan, Sonata midsize and Santa Fe and Tucson sport utility vehicles picked up awards, while Kia was recognized for the Optima midsize car, the Forte and Soul small cars, and the Sorento and Sportage SUVs. Volkswa-gen won plaudits for the Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, the Golf and GTI small cars and the Touareg and Tiguan SUVs. Audi’s A3 and A4 se-
dans and Q5 SUV also made the list.
Subaru and Chrysler re-ceived five awards apiece wh i l e Vo lvo a n d Me r-cedes had four. Subaru was the only automaker to win awards in every vehicle cat-egory in which it competes. Nissan and Honda had two awards each and Mitsubishi and BMW had one.
Hyundai said the award was particularly sweet for the Sonata, which also re-ceived the top score of five stars in the government’s crash test program. The combination put Sonata “in a safety position un-surpassed in the industry,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
Mark Barnes, Volkswagen of America’s chief operating officer, said the recognition for VW was a “testament to our commitment to engi-neering safe vehicles.”
GM’s winners include the Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Equinox; Cadillac CTS and SRX; Buick LaCrosse and Regal and GMC Ter-rain. Chris Perry, vice presi-dent of Chevrolet market-ing, said the award would build on “the already strong global safety reputation of the Cruze.”
Ford’s picks include the Ford Taurus, Fusion, Fi-esta, Explorer and Flex; and the Lincoln MKS, MKZ and MKT. Ford vice presi-dent Sue Cischke said the Explorer, which arrived at dealer showrooms earlier
this month, offered a good example of the company’s safety improvements, in-cluding inflatable seat belts and technology that helps a driver maintain control of the vehicle along tough curves.
Toyota, which has grap-pled with several high-pro-file recalls during the past year, scored with the Toyo-ta Avalon, Corolla, Sienna, Highlander and Venza; the Lexus RX; and the Scion tC and xB. Toyota said its eight safety picks were “reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reli-able vehicles for our cus-tomers.”
The vehicles were cho-sen for protection in front, side and rear crash tests. To qualify for the award, the in-surance industry group also requires the vehicles to have anti-rollover electronic sta-bility control, or ESC, and receive top scores in roof strength tests.
Institute president Adrian Lund credited automakers for “quickly rising to meet the more-challenging cri-teria for ‘Top Safety Pick.’” He said several automakers have requested tests for new models coming out early next year and Lund predict-ed more winners would be added.
