Internet and Education
• The Internet has changed the way we teach students today. From chalkboard and overhead projectors to whiteboard and projection screens, the internet has changed the way we teach. However the internet has not been a completely positive influence on teaching
Pros and Cons of Internet in Education
Pros• Access to materials
throughout the world• Better grades for kids• Ability to use various
internet tools
Cons• Increase in cheating and
plagiarism• Not all materials is accurate• The reliance on the internet
in students and professors
Data Management Systems
• Data Warehousing• Intranet applications available outside of the
school network• The ability to do more work outside of the
classroom
Student Information Systems
• Allows for more distant education learning and teaching
• Decreases the amount and need for paperwork, which increases efficiency
• The ability to collaborate with schools around the world
Student Response Systems
• Integrating classroom management systems into online course management systems
• Collaborative learning via the internet• Transitioning from past and modern
classrooms into futuristic classrooms
Integration
• How do we integrate all of these components into a classroom utilizing the National Education Technology Plan
• How do we keep focus on the students while integrating new and future technologies into the classroom
• How do we focus on the near future and still integrate long term goals
Integration of National Technology Plan
• Learning, Productivity, Infrastructure, Teaching, and Assessment
• Focused on the applications using new technologies available to school systems
• Using effective open source and cloud applications to reduce costs of high end products
Keeping the Focus on the Student
• Making sure that any product or software can be used in more than one area of learning
• Allowing the student to develop teaching materials that can be used in teaching
• Using any new technology to create more hands-on learning for students
• Making sure that educators are equipped to teach a digital student population
What Students Spend Their Time Doing
THE FACTS
• 14% of teachers allow creation of something new with technology
• 63% never do allow creation with technology once a week
• 76% of teachers have never used wikis, blogs, or podcast
• 61% of reading teachers never use digital story telling software
China’s Influence on Education
• 2016 largest English speaking country will be China
• More honor students in China than people in North America, but only half of North American students will graduate high school
