As Donald J. Trump picks up steam in the Republi-can presidential primary, New Jersey business leaderssay his anti-immigrant, isolationist views would hit thestate’s economy particularly hard.
If, that is, he really is anti-immigrant and isolation-ist.
New Jersey business groups are trying to wrap their
heads around a Trump candidacy, and it’s not an easytask. On its face, Trump, a real estate developer, speakstheir language as a plain-spoken leader who plans tobring his business acumen to Washington, D.C. But healso has taken aim at minorities and the disadvantagedin a way that would get any CEO of a major U.S. compa-ny fired.
It shows the tug-of-war between different factionsof the Republican Party. On one side is the mainstreambusiness community that pushes for low taxes, fewerregulations, free trade and immigrant labor. On the oth-er are populist voters who have been left behind in theglobal economy. Can the two co-exist?
