Multiple award-winning writer/director/producer Tina Andrews is bringing her provocative new play, Buckingham, to the Center Stage Theater at the Southampton Cultural Center for seven performances beginning tomorrow.
The play, which Andrews will also direct, dramatizes the aristocratic intrigue, ethnic scandal, and family dysfunction in the life of Queen Charlotte Sophia who was forced to hide her Moorish features and skin tone under heavy white Elizabethan make-up before her arranged marriage to “mad” King George III. Since they married “By Proxy,” the king did not discover her true ethnicity until their wedding night.
Based on meticulous research coupled with her acclaimed penchant for connecting dramatic dots, the play, then called Charlotte Sophia, and directed by Andrews, was a sizzler in its debut at the acclaimed Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, California. It is based on her novel Charlotte Sophia: Myths, Madness and the Moor, which will also be sold at the Center.
A n d r e w s i s n o s t r a n g e r to compelling stories. Her CBS miniseries “Sally Hemings: An American Scandal,” based on her play, The Mistress of Monticello, dramatized the relat ionship between third President Thomas Jefferson and his slave mistress Sally Hemings. It was the highest rated television event of the season and garnered Andrews the Writers Guild

Grant on “Days Of Our Lives.”When literary icon and mentor
Alex Haley convinced her to write after reading two of her plays, Andrews’ career began and she has never looked back. Among the many projects she has written and/or produced are the Warner Bros. film Why Do Fools Fall In Love, and the CBS miniseries “Jacqueline Bouvier
Kennedy Onassis.” She also directed the recent Southampton Cultural Center staged production of her play The Mistress of Monticello.
Andrews, who lives on the North Fork, said she is looking forward to working in Southampton again. “I’m thrilled to tell this story onstage at the Cultural Center. So many people have no idea that the grandmother of Queen Victoria was actually a woman of color or what she went through to be chosen as a British queen. They are also unaware that King George III bought the famed Buckingham Palace for his new bride.”
The play runs from tomorrow (the preview) through May 12 at the Levitas Center for the Arts at Southampton Cultural Center, 25 Pond Lane. For dates, times, and tickets call the box office at 631-287-4377. Andrews will sign a free copy of her book to the first 100 tickets sold through SCC’s website at www.scc-arts.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door 40 minutes prior to curtain.

On Sunday there was a vending fair, face painting for kids and music by the band 27 east (no relation). A charity raffle benefitted A Miracle for Mia. Mia Bella Buffo-Zingarelli is the daughter of local dad, Noah, and Mom Francesca. Born with a severe mitochondrial disorder she was given just one month to live, and recently celebrated her sixth birthday. The family moved to Boston to receive full time care for Mia, but her cousins and aunts were on hand for Sunday’s event.

NEW HOURS: Open Tues. - Sat. 9:30 - 5
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) This can be a very calming week. Make peace of mind the priority and you will be able to find it wherever you look. I know you like lots of action, but sometimes peaceful can be extraordinary.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) It’s all good this week. The energy aligns for you to enjoy win/win situations, so keep an eye out for them. See how things can all fit together and work out. If you’re not seeing it, look harder.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Seek out those things that are fulfilling and move you. This is a great time to be actively involved with the things you love to do. Find the time, make the time; just make sure you are doing those things you love.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Embrace the new and the different. That will be your job this week. Don’t resist the change that is happening, embrace it instead. I know it can be scary, but isn’t all you want in the new and the
different?
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Tame your fears. This may be a time when your mind rushes to all the past reasons you have to be afraid of things. Do your best to strip away these old fears and find a way to deal exclusively with what is happening now.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Time to take charge. Become the ultimate authority in your life and don’t be afraid of the additional responsibilities that may be presented. Lead if you have the chance to lead.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Look for the areas of your life where you may be leaking energy. You need all your energy right now so over-giving to others is really not an option, not unless you want to burn yourself out. Say no and mean it.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Time for your head to take a rest. You may very well have over-thought yourself into a state of mental constriction.
Today’s Birthday: Joseph Heller, 1923The East End has been home to many famous authors, but one of
the best, and most accessible, was Joseph Heller.Though he lived in East Hampton for much of his life, Heller was
born in Coney Island to a poor family and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps after graduating from high school. He flew over 60 combat missions during World War II.
Heller always wanted to be a professional writer, and though his family was too poor to send him to college, he put himself through school with the help of the G.I. Bill, first attending Southern Cal, and then Columbia. A gifted student, he earned a Fulbright Scholarship to Oxford.
Heller sold a short story to Atlantic magazine upon his return from abroad and set off to work on his masterpiece Catch 22.
The going was tough — first a chapter appeared in a magazine as a short story, and then Heller decided to expand it to a novelette. Eventually, it became a full-fledged novel, and Simon and Schuster gave him a $50 advance. He delivered the completed work four years after the deadline and received another $750.
Catch 22 was published to mixed reviews, but some critics realized its importance – one called it “the best American novel in years.” Heller also wrote a play that became the basis for the “McHale’s Navy” television series.
Heller wrote sparsely, at least for publication, though his novel Something Happened (1974) was a critical and commercial success. When an interviewer once chided Heller because he never produced another book as good as Catch 22, the author replied, “Who has?”
Heller and his second wife Valerie lived year round in East Hampton, and fans often engaged him in conversation, be it on the streets, in restaurants, and even the local movie theater. He died in 1999.
You will need to take a break from all of that over-thinking and find a place for you to rest your mind. Do something fun and let it go.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) No settling. This becomes a time for you to be courageous and take a stand if you have the opportunity. Courage is not the absence of fear. Feel your fears; just don’t become paralyzed by them.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Birthing time. All those ideas that have been bouncing around in your head or written down on some lovely lists somewhere have the chance to be implemented this week. Get to it and start checking things off.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Make it real. Enough with the thinking and plotting and planning, time to make things real. You can trust that you have
thought things through and now is the time. Manifest is the word.
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Make sure you are talking about what you need. It would be great if those around you could read your mind and know what you need, but they may not have your skill for that. You will have to say things out loud.
NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Coming SoonIron Man 3 (PG-13) Who would
have thought that Robert Downey
Jr. would live this long? Who would have thought he would be clean and sober. Who would have thought he’d be the highest paid actor in the world, and that he’d be a franchised superhero? Only in Hollywood, folks. The Iron Man gang is back, though, and Tony Stark/Iron Man/Downey is in fine form. The radiant Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are on board for the ride.
New To Theaters
What Maisie Knew (R) Young Onata Aprile shines as a six-year trying to cope with her parents’ messy divorce in a contemporary adaptation of the Henry James novel. Julianne Moore has never been better. Give it a try.
New On DVDLinco ln Steven Spielberg’s
attempt to reimagine history seems like it was made to impress the White House instead of captivate viewers. The wooden acting, endless dialogue, and the overwrought score obscure whatever historical significance it has. Easily the biggest disappointment of the year. Thank you, academy members, for seeing through the PR barrage and largely ignoring the film.
Now Playing Kon Tiki (PG- 13) Thor
Heyerdahl’s riveting account of sailing from South America to Poly-nesia comes alive courtesy of direc-tors Max Manus, Espen Sanberg, and Joachim Rønning. Pål Sverre Hagen plays the author, whose unpublished book about the early migration to Polynesia was scoffed at because it was so unbelievable. Angered by the rejection, Heyerdahl builds his own raft and retraces the journey himself. Hollywood takes certain liberties — sharks and whatnot. But hey, it’s a movie. Enjoy.

On Sunday morning, a crowd of hardy spinners donned their Boston Red Sox caps and Celtics green for a ride to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon at B-East Fitness Studio in Amagansett. Fitness guru Romaine Gordon expects to raise close to $2000 for The One Fund Boston. The hour-plus spin featured a playlist boasting performers from Boston, and an especially rousing rendition of “Sweet Caroline” by the riders. Indy’s news editor Kitty Merrill was there. Be sure to check out the Indy Gets Fit blog on our website to learn more about Merrill’s adventures in spinning.
