9:00am-12:00pmBeneath the Mask: Adoption through the Eyes of Adolescents
Adolescence is a time when adoptees struggle with an extra layer of challenges related to their identity, their future, and their past. Ms. Debbie Riley, Executive Director of C.A.S.E. and author of Beneath the Mask: Understanding Adopted Teens, facilitates this training, weaving in excerpts from her book. Normal tasks of the teen years are intensified by adoption, particularly if teens are being raised by parents of a different race or culture. This workshop provides participants with an understanding of how adoption influences the normal tasks of adolescence, including separation from parents, identity formation, and decisions related to sexuality. Potential mild and serious emotional and behavioral issues at home and at school will be addressed.
12:00-1:00pmLunch (included in Registration Fee)
1:00-4:00pmMorning Training Continues
SpeakerA nationally recognized adoption expert and dynamic public speaker, Ms. Riley has more than 30 years of professional experience, including extensive health care management and administrative expertise,
hands-on experience at designing and developing nationally acclaimed adoption-competent programs for professionals, as well as her direct (and current) delivery of specialized counseling services to adopted children, teens, adults and their families, affords her the broad knowledge and nationally respected expertise needed to promote health education, child advocacy and public policy development.
In 1998, she co-founded The Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.), a non-profit, independent pre- and post-adoption organization in the Baltimore-Washington area. C.A.S.E. offers a wide array of mental health, educational and youth development programs to strengthen the well-being of foster and adopted youth and their families.
