The Anti-Corruption in Local Governance Training offers a diverse curriculum, based on our holistic approach to the fight against corruption. In catering to different local governance actors, the curriculum combines comprehensive insight from a number of academic disciplines with practical know-how.

Programme Objectives
Decentralization and rapid urbanization have increased the importance of local governments worldwide. It is at this level where citizens directly interact with the public sector and where trust in democratic institutions is installed. Local governance is, however, also prone to all kinds of corruption, from bribery and public procurement fraud to nepotism and undue influence.
Over five dynamic days, participants will not only share their experiences, but also leave with new ideas for designing, managing, and evaluating local integrity systems. Our instructors will lead the participants through interactive case studies and anti-corruption strategies. The examples include cities and local government institutions at various stages of development. The roles of regional governments, municipal administrations, the private sector, and civil society organizations in mitigating corruption risks will be highlighted.
By integrating theory and practice, the programme will also provide an opportunity to discuss and develop measures for strengthening local integrity systems through team exercises and classroom involvement. Participants will examine the latest evidence on the importance of
The Anti-Corruption in Local Governance Training is a five-day programme focusing on corruption in local governance and municipal administration, aiming to strengthen the skills of mayors, local politicians, regional government administrators, municipal leaders, ombudsman offices, and governance experts from CSOs and development organizations.
It will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the various types and mechanisms of corruption in local governance, as well as strategies and tools to prevent it. Participants will actively contribute to knowledge sharing through discussions and case studies.
About IACA
IACA is an international organization which aims to substantially contribute to the global fight against corruption. Through education, research, and cooperation, it strives to address shortcomings in knowledge and practice and empower professionals.
It draws on an unwavering drive towards excellence, a spirit of innovation, and a commitment to rendering itself accessible to participants from each part of the world. IACA was initiated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), the Republic of Austria, and other stakeholders. It is an international organization since 8 March 2011. To date, it has a constituency of 70 UN Member States and international organizations, and cooperates with a number of international bodies and academic institutions.

With state of the art facilities, IACA offers a campus atmosphere and a conducive learning environment. It is situated in Laxenburg, a small picturesque town neighbouring the Austrian capital, Vienna. Programme Faculty

Course Topics
The sessions, held over five days at IACA’s campus, will cover in particular: f Types, risks, and consequences of corruption at the local level f Transparency, accountability, and public participation at the local level f Strategies to develop and implement local integrity systems f Curbing corruption in public procurement and licensing f Leadership responsibility in addressing corruption f Integrity incentives in public administration f Ethical dilemmas
Participants will actively contribute to knowledge sharing through discussions and case studies.
Candidate Profile
The programme aims to bring together a group of approximately 25 seasoned professionals, experienced in local governance, from all parts of the world. Mayors, local politicians, regional government administrators, municipal leaders, experts from ombudsman offices and local anti-corruption organizations, and governance experts from development organizations are encouraged to apply.
Admission Requirements
f Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in local governance f Proficiency in written and spoken English
Course Dates and Admission Process
The programme lasts for five days, from 14 - 18 July 2014. Participants will be selected based on their education and professional experience. Programme Fees
The tuition amounts to 2,400 EUR. Lunch, round trip transportation from Vienna to the Academy, excursions and evening meals are included in the tuition fee. A limited number of participants from Least Developed Countries may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver. For more information, please write to [email protected].
Accommodation and Travel Costs
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements and any associated costs. For the convenience of the participants, a limited amount of rooms will be pre-booked at hotels in various categories in Vienna as well as areas in close proximity to the Academy. For those interested in this offer, it is recommended to contact the hotel as early as possible to ensure a reservation. Participants that prefer other areas of accommodation are welcome to make arrangements according to their own preferences. Participants requiring a visa for Austria are responsible for their own visa arrangements and any associated costs.
