WHY IS ANTARCTICA A SIGNIFICANT
ENVIRONMENT?
http://www.coolantarctica.com/Antarctica%20fact%

The fact that Antarctica to this day has
places still remaining un-discovered is
what makes it one of the most
significant places in the world.
Important to the development of
science, Antarctica offers an indicator
as to how the Earth’s environment is
changing (due to human activity).
Antarctica is under attack in terms of
pollution, endangered species and
contaminated soil. Environmental
campaigns are trying to prevent this,
hence the significance of Antarctica.

WHY IS ANTARCTICA A SIGNIFICANT
ENVIRONMENT?
https://www.bas.ac.uk/about/antarctica/why-
antarctica-matters/
To scientists and the world, Antarctica
is a unique record of how our planet’s
climate is changing. This is possible as
Antarctica’s remoteness and
uninhabited plains of 4km thick ice
can change due to global warming
and human pollution. With Antarctica,
we can understand what state our
world is at in terms of pollution.
Tourism is very strong in Antarctica
due to its pristine environment and it’s
beautiful scenery, however, the icy
plains are slowly becoming increasing
vulnerable each year.

From this part of the picture, we can
see the beautiful scenery and plains of
Antarctica . This shows that it might
have some importance to do with the
issue or subject that this photo is trying
to convey.
The wing of a passenger plane
identifies the idea of humans
travelling in Antarctica. However in
this instance, we can identify that
tourism is the main idea as the cut
edge of the plane wing passing by or
swerving around the mountain can
shows tourism or sightseeing.
Whether it be identifying an issue or
a subject, this photo is definitely
identifying the sightseeing tours of
Antarctica.

WHY IMPACT DO PEOPLE HAVE ON THIS

The current people who are living
locally on Antarctica are
impacting the Antarctic
environment through hunting and
fishing, lowering the population of
wildlife and fish stock. This can
impact not only the species
themselves, but the predators
who need prey to survive, hence
the continuous chain of decrease
in wildlife.
Although this decrease in wildlife
is happening, humans are trying to
help sustain the wildlife population
by restoring everything they took
away. Animals are gaining
protection by marine reserves and
conservation campaigns.

From this cartoon, we can see that
this ship is the “S.S Global
Warming”, and with people aboard,
we can tell that it represents the
world and the people who are
causing global warming. The idea of
the man stating that the ice of
Antarctica is “white and cold mud”
shows us that the ice is starting to
melt, exactly like mud, hence the
observation. The idea that this
cartoon portrays is that global
warming is a major issue for
Antarctica and the fact that it might
affect our future and Antarctica’s
existence.

This map simply outlines that
territorial claims of some of the
countries that are members of the
Antarctic Treaty System. For these
claims, we can assume that each
country has the right to research and
investigate on there claim however
as an opinion, it is uncertain what
activities could happen as it may not
co-operate with the Antarctic Treaty
or the members who are part of it.
The impact that these countries have
on the environment is important to
be taken care of, as making the
wrong move whether it be harming
the environment or wildlife can
cause serious trouble towards the
treaty and the rest of the world.

IS THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY DOING ENOUGH TO
MAKE SURE THAT THIS AREA IS SUSTAINABLE?

As a global effort,
environmentalists are taking note
of how their activity in the bases
affects the environment, mainly
for disturbance and waste
reasons.
Due to the protection of the
environment and wildlife in
Antarctica, the global community
is limiting annual visitors and has
made strict rules about the bases
e.g. no vehicles.

For the protection of the last
great wilderness on Earth, the
Antarctic Treaty System as a
global community created the
“Madrid Protocol” that
bonded national members in
there agreement to keeping
Antarctica sustainable. The
Protocol related to subjects
such as environmental impact,
conservation of flora and
fauna, prevention of marine
pollution and many other
environmental aspects;

From this well-directed photo, we
can see the unity of the flags
surrounding the geographic south
pole. This shows the idea of how the
countries of the world have united as
one around the pole, meaning that
together they are in Antarctica. In the
background, we can also see a large
base with the symbol of Antarctica
which happens to be the logo for the
Antarctic Treaty System. The
Antarctic Treaty regulates the
international relations to the
protection and respect to Antarctica.
This photo shows that the world is
helping and keeping Antarctica safe
as a community.
From my annotated research, we can easily conclude that the rate of how the global community
is helping the environment of Antarctica is great, however we can identify that it is not enough
for the environment of Antarctica to be sustained.
As a global community, we are becoming more aware of the beauties and the scientific
significance that Antarctica holds as every country who is part of the Antarctic Treaty has signed
to a protocol that relates to conservations and rules of what and what not to perform in
Antarctica (See Source 2, FQ #3). Alongside this, as a world we are also helping to sustain
Antarctica through being aware about how humans impact the environment. Environmental
audits and use of alternative energy sources is helping bases on Antarctica to get a better
understanding of what needs to be changed and how they can benefit the future of Antarctica
(See Source 1, FQ #1).
Although the global community is helping the environment and wildlife in Antarctica, only a
very small amount of us are actually doing something about the awareness. Several billions of
people to this day all around the world are polluting and over-using cars and heat/electrical
sources that are causing the whole idea of greenhouse gases and global warming. If human
evolution continues, the more people and the more pollution can be made.
Overall, we can see that the people of the world are taking action and are doing something
about how Antarctica, one of the most significant environments on our planet, could overtime
begin to melt away. However, although it seems like we are taking care of this matter, It is
obvious that overtime, Antarctica will melt away due to the overgrown population’s
misunderstanding of how bad pollution really is.
Summary Of Research
Evaluation Of Project Research a. Which two sources were the most helpful? (Give reasons why)
From the research I have carried out, I believe my most substantial pieces of information would
have to have been from my Source 1 in Focus Question 1 and my Source 1 in Focus Question 3.
Both pieces of research were full of useful information that was clear to annotate and gave me a
better understanding of what the kind of processes are taking place in Antarctica to help
preserve it and its qualities.
a. Which type of sources did you not use? (Give a clear reason)
For educational and statistical purposes, I tried to use websites that were certified and contained
information that of informational reports by people who actually are telling the truth. 90% of
websites are fake, and I made sure not to use comments from people around the world as my
resource because there is a high chance that it is opinion based and may not be correct.
a. Were there some sources which showed bias? (Good or bad viewpoints expressed that are
based on the interest group that presents the source material)
From the areas that I researched on the internet, I did not see or pay attention to any bias
comments or statement during the annotation process. There was controversial information
about how the global community is or isn’t doing enough but apart from that, I didn’t noticed any
form of bias.
Evaluation Of Project Annotation a. Did you find the annotation process easy or difficult? Why?
During annotation, I found that once you get started it is fairly easy to continue. The research that
I collected was specifically selected for its substantial information and easy reading qualities. I
found that the annotating process was overall simple however if you write in a lot more detail,
the process begins to take more time.
a. Did the example of the annotated work help with the annotation process?
Honestly, the example helped me understand more about how I should carry out my project. At
first when I read the assignment details, I couldn’t clearly visualize what I had to do to score
Excellence, however with the example, I got a better picture as to how I would layout my
annotations in terms of how much work I needed to do and how it was supposed to look.
Improvement a. Would you change your approach to researching and collecting information? How?
As of today, the internet provides a lot of helpful information but also fake and pointless
websites. This project helps me to learn and develop a taste for telling which websites are good
and which ones are not so good for information. As a last resort, I would use books however I
feel that the quick access of the internet and the fact that it is always updated is what gives me
the idea to use the recent information from the web rather than any other source. Overall, I
believe I worked well on this project and my information that I have collected is great for getting
a better understanding of what really is happening to Antarctica.
