Alumni should be the best possible ambassadors. This study proves that this is indeed the case for Hotelschool The Hague: 99% of Alumni recommend Hotelschool The Hague. Another good sign: 1,155 of a total of 7,500 Alumni completed the questionnaire that this study is based on. This response rate of more than 15 percent is almost twice the average for this kind of study. The questions posed in the study cover various topics, such as; the education itself, the management placement, what Alumni did after graduation, their first job, entrepreneurship, their current job, and a review of the study at Hotelschool The Hague. Alumni are divided into four sub-groups in this study:• Male and Female• Dutch and International Alumni (Internationals)• Alumni from Amsterdam and The Hague• Clusters of graduation years: less than 5 years ago,
5 to 10 years ago, 10 to 15 years ago, 15 to 25 years ago, more than 25 years ago
This refinement of the study gives detailed insight into the employment of Alumni, their career development, and the link between education and the professional work field.

Introduction
ALUMNI SURVEY 2016 - WHITE PAPER2
A small majority of Alumni are male (52%), but there is a trend towards a greater proportion of females. The majority of Alumni in the most recent group of graduates (0-5 years ago) are female (52%).
14% of respondents are Internationals. This is a lower percentage than in the current student population, because Hotelschool The Hague only truly became International in the 2000s. A majority of Dutch Alumni, 53%, are male; whereas a majority of Internationals are female, also 53%.
Almost two thirds of the respondents are younger than 45 years old; the largest group is between 26 and 35 years old (40%); and 9% are under 26 years old.
91% of Alumni studied at The Hague Campus, and 9% at the Amsterdam Campus. This difference is explained by the fact that Hotelschool The Hague has only had a Campus in Amsterdam since 2000.
Almost all Alumni speak English (98%) and Dutch (88%). German is the third language (75%); 8% of Alumni have done the International Fast Track Programme (the accelerate programme, which started in 2006).

Hotelschool The Hague was the first choice of the vast majority of Alumni
A third of the Alumni are SpecialistsHotelschool The Hague identified five student profiles to ensure the students are best prepared for the industry. The five profiles are The Hospitality Leader, The Hospitality Enthusiast, The Specialist, The Consultant and The Entrepreneur.
Male Alumni identified most with the Hospitality Leader profile (24% vs. 13%), females were more likely to see themselves as a Specialist (39% vs. 25%). Almost half of the males, and just over half of the females identified with one of these two profiles. Internationals identified more (40%) with the Specialist than Dutch Alumni (29%).
Alumni who graduated long ago (more than 25 years ago) identified mainly with the Hospitality Leader (38%); recent graduates identified more with the Specialist. No less than 40% of those who graduated 6-10 years ago identified with the profile of the Specialist.

I do not recognise myself in any of the profiles
Only slightly more than half of the Alumni had always intended to study hospitality, slightly more Dutch (54%) than International Alumni (47%) intended to do so. Having opted for hospitality, Hotelschool The Hague was the first choice of 85% of Alumni. In this too, the Dutch Alumni (86%) were somewhat more convinced than the Internationals (81%).
Respondents gave three main reasons for choosing Hotelschool The Hague: • school’s reputation and heritage (53%)• international school (30%)• international internship/placement possibilities (26%)
It is striking that the Internationals clearly had other motives for choosing Hotelschool The Hague than Dutch Alumni. Their top three reasons were: • price/quality ratio (48%)• language/English spoken (36%)• school’s reputation and heritage (34%)

A management placement appears to be a good way of preparing for a future career: 38% carried on working for the company after the internship. Another 23% received a job offer, but turned it down.
Just over three quarters of Alumni did their management placement in the hospitality industry – 68% of which worked at hotels ‘on property’. Looking at the department in which they were placed, 18% worked in Sales and Marketing and 17% in Food and Beverage.
It is noticeable that a greater proportion of recently graduated Alumni did their management placement in the Netherlands (42%) than the group that graduated between 6-10 years ago, 30% of whom did their management training in the Netherlands. The gradual decrease in popularity of the United States is striking; 14% of Alumni who graduated more than 25 years ago did their management placement there. Less than 5% of the most recent graduates did so.This can be explained by the fact that nowadays the alternatives, such as Asia and the Middle East, are abundant.
A significantly smaller proportion of recent graduates did their management placement in the hospitality industry (66%). The figure for earlier graduates is around 80%. Recent graduates opted instead for consultancy (6%), or marketing and advertising (5%).
It is also striking that 63% (42% management level and 21% senior level) of the Alumni who continued working at the placement company held a management position after their internship.

The three most popular institutes for further studies were:• Erasmus University Rotterdam• Nyenrode Business School• University of Amsterdam
Doing further studies has gained in popularity over the years: about a quarter of Alumni who graduated less than 15 years ago did further studies. That is a much higher percentage than for Alumni who graduated more than 15 years ago (13% choose to do further studies).

More Dutch Alumni went travelling after graduation (7% vs. 5%) and stayed away longer than International Alumni: almost half travelled for half a year or longer, compared to 38% of Internationals.
Three quarters of Alumni from The Hague Campus started working immediately after graduation, as opposed to 62% of those from Amsterdam Campus. Consultancy is popularOver a quarter of the entrepreneurs work in Consulting. It is also notable that nearly two-thirds of the Alumni who graduated more than 25 years ago started their own Consultancy business at some point. The figure is 46% for those who graduated between 15 and 25 years ago.
Dutch Alumni seem more entrepreneurial than Internationals: 39% started their own business at some point compared to 18% of those from abroad. This can be explained by the fact that Hotelschool The Hague’s International Alumni have graduated more recently, since the school has been a fully-fledged International school since the 2000s. Looking at the total response of the Alumni we find that mostly Alumni who graduated longer than 15 years ago start their own business.
Studying at Hotelschool The Hague seems to increasingly stimulate entrepreneurship: 41% of the most recent graduated Alumni, who started a business (total 14%), started the business whilst studying or directly after graduation. In comparison; when looking at the total of the respondents; 88% started the own business at a later point in the career.
