Letter of Reference – Alicia Stirling
To whom it may concern:
Alicia was employed in DIALOG’s Vancouver studio as an intermediate architectural student from January 2015 to August 2015.
Alicia settled into our studio environment very quickly, becoming a strong team member and friend. She was adept at moving between projects and was always open to feedback. Her range of contributions spanned from design development on a medium-‐scale resort development to technical/permit drawings on a new high-‐density residential project. This work often ran concurrently under multiple senior staff.
Alicia displayed a strong desire to learn and develop into a well-‐rounded architect. She thrived in our multi-‐disciplinary environment while still managing to add her mark.
We wish Alicia every success in her future career endeavors.
Sincerely,

October 1, 2014 Dear Sir or Madam, It is with pleasure that I recommend Alicia Stirling in the next steps of her architectural career. As an intern, Alicia was employed by 1100 Architect between May 5th and August 15th 2014, and reported directly to me. She did an excellent job providing technical support, drafting and preparing documentation for meetings. Alicia’s software skills and superior organization contributed positively to the development of the drawings for a complex school remodeling and addition project. When Alicia completed her internship, these drawings were in the design development phase. In addition to working on construction documents, Alicia prepared presentation quality plans and renderings and was a support in client and consultant meetings. Alicia is always professional, always cheerful and willing to take on new responsibilities. She confidently acquires the knowledge and skill required to perform new tasks. When she requires guidance, she does not hesitate to ask for it. She has a unique ability to see where her assistance will be required and offers to go above and beyond what is asked of her. Alicia can work independently and follows through to be sure a job is accomplished on time. Alicia would be an asset to any employer and I recommend her for any endeavor she pursues. Yours truly, Gwendolyn Conners, AIA

Approaching the site, the boat-like shape of the Great Room can be seen rising in contrast to the hori-zon. As the Great Room is passed, a ledge is approached that over-looks the contents of the staged beach. The project slowly descends toward the water through several tiers of decks, pools, viewing galler-ies and piers for swimming and ob-servation. The user may walk along the pier toward the vast horizon and access the pool viewing galleries or they may descend through a cov-ered staircase to the pool and other facilities located on the lower level. Urban Beach serves as an interven-tion to mimic the natural descent of the beach toward the water.

Located on the Aurelian Walls, just south of Porta Metronia in Rome, a house for J.D. Salinger: famous author of the classic ‘Catcher in The Rye’, WW2 veteran and infamous re-cluse. The new construction is a small writers studio with a large library grafted in a void of an existing guard tower. The top of the home will be vis-ible from the park on the west side of the wall and match the height of the original guard towers. On the eastern facade is a translucent curtain wall to allow light into the space but keep prying eyes out. The home will pro-vide Salinger with a private vantage point from which he can observe human action in the park, but remain hidden away and unseen.

Boxes Off Bathurst, located in down-town Toronto, is a landscape and building strategy that works to link several complex programs in order to create a series of diverse but rational relationships throughout the site. This strategy, which relies on two towers connected by a large central atrium space, allows for passage through the site and a transition from public spaces to the private hotel and resi-dences located in the upper towers. A translucent screen filters light and covers the semi-public and private programs to provide privacy in the ever-expanding metropolis of glass towers that define Toronto.

A Chair For Audrey Hepburn

A modest yet sophisticated chair for a delicate woman of petite stature. Audrey Hepburn remains a symbol of class and the intent is to design a chair that is elegant in its simplic-ity. The chair borrows its shape from the idea of the little black dress made famous by Hepburn and fans out to mimic the shape. It is constructed of simple repetitive elements with a dowel threaded through to disperse and support the applied load. Though designed to be petite and support a humble occupation, the chair can support over two hundred and fifty pounds. In addition, it is modifiable and can be transformed to reflect the aes-thetic preference of the user. Class is at the heart of all Audrey Hepburn associations and is evident through the design of her chair.

29 Chair For Audrey Hepburn
Chair: Audrey Hepburn’s chair sitting in its initial posi-tion with its dress-like shape
Constructability: The chair is constructed of repeated fabricated members that are held together with two dowels and a threaded rod to compress the chair and restrict lateral
Transformation: Half the members of chair may be easily removed, the remain-ing slid over and then the removed ones re-added to the other side to invert the curve of the chair and add a level of customization to suit aesthetic preference

A new rowing club that redirects movement along the existing banks of the Grand River in Cambridge. The Path is composed of four build-ings that frame a network of paths and ensure a constant connection is maintained between rowers, pe-destrians and the river. At the heart of the project is a path that directly connects the rowing program to the hikers, bikers, fishers and other exist-ing leisure programs, allowing them to all take place simultaneously. The new rowing club serves as the infra-structural link the site was previously missing and strengthens the relation-ship between the individual and the river.

CAMBRIDGE ROWING CLUBA new rowing club that redirects movement along the existing landscape of the Grand River. The building’s act to form a piece of infrastructure that connects all exist-ing pieces and maintains a constant connection between rower’s, pedestrians, and the river. The new rowing club is made of four buildings – boat storage, boat repair and administration, café and a training facility – that act to frame a network of paths. The network of paths enables direct interaction and a constant link between all leisure programs. Runners, hikers, and dog walkers are lead through the Cambridge Rowing Club on a direct lime-stone path that provides multiple chances for river views. Meanwhile rower’s, fishers, viewers or individuals who want to enjoy the scenic views the Grand River provides are provided a perpendicular circulatory path down to the river. By carefully considering circulation the new Cambridge Rowing Club acts as an infrastructural link to connect all leisure programs.

From September until December 2013 I worked for Atelier Pro Architekten located in The Hague, Netherlands. I worked closely with a team on the design development of Edith Stein, a high school in The Hague that is being built as an extension to an existing cathedral. My main responsibilities included aiding in the creation and maintenance of the Revit model, the production of images for facade and other studies and the construction of a 1:50 scale model. In addition, I worked on a variety of other projects on a part-time basis to produce visualizations for client meetings, advertising and a set of final presentation renders.
