The8thAnnualPre‐ICISWorkshoponHCIResearchinMISWORKSHOPINFORMATION:SIGHCIwillhostthe8thpre‐ICISworkshoponHCIinMISonMonday,December14,2009inPhoenix,Arizona.TheobjectiveoftheworkshopistoprovideanopenandconstructivediscussionforumofimportantHCIresearchinInformationSystemsthataddressesthewayshumansinteractwithinformation,technologies,andtasks‐especiallyinbusiness,managerial,organizational,socialand/orculturalcontexts.The 8th Annual Pre-ICIS Workshop on HCI Research in MIS received 36 submissions (27 completed research papers and 9 research-in-progress papers) from which 12 papers (33% acceptance rate) were accepted after a rigorous review process. Inthehistoryofsoftwaredevelopment,theabstractionlevelonwhichsoftwareisdescribedhasbeenincreasingallthetime.Thelatesttrendistospecifysoftwareusing(platform‐independent)models,whicharethengraduallyand(semi‐)automaticallytransformedintoexecutableapplicationsfordifferentplatformsandtargetdevices.Thegoalofthisworkshopistodiscusstheuseof(semi‐)formalmodelsinuserinterfacedevelopment.Whatistherightwayofcreativedesignandinteractiondesignworkingwithuserinterfacemodels?Canmodelshelpincopingwithinnovativeinteractiontechniques? The workshop will be a platform for discussing the modeling of advanced user interfaces, such as interfaces supporting complex interactions, visualizations, multimedia representations, multimodality, adaptability or customization. It will contribute to a better integration of knowledge from the Human-Computer Interaction community and the Software Engineering community. ReviewingBenShneiderman’sandCatherinePlaisant’smostrecentversionofProf.Shneiderman’sclassictextaboutdesigninguser‐interfacesisadaunting,butrewardingchallenge.Usually,ittakesaboutthreetimestogetanythingcomplexright.Ihaveinmylibraryatleasttwoorthreeversionsofthebooknow.Ihavegivenawayearlierversionstostaffandstudentstoassisttheirowncareers.IncomparisontotheSecondEdition(1992),whichIamcheckinginrelationtothemostrecentversion,thelatestincarnationusesmanymorecolorphotos,muchmorevisualenhancementofchapters,summarytablesofcontentsinadditiontothelonger,completedtableofcontents,andothertechniquesofmodernbookdesigntoconveyacontemporaryfeel.Thebookalsocomeswithapre‐paidsix‐monthaccesstothebook’scompanionWebsite.ThebookisalsocontemporaryinevolvingaWeb‐basedsolutiontonewcontentandtoreaders’continuingservicefeestoobtainadditionalinformation.
Lookingthroughtwoeditionsseparatedbymorethan18years(strangely,thelatestversionisstamped2010initspublicationdate,although,likenewautomobiles,itisissuedin2009),oneisstruckbytheevolutionofuser‐interfaceplanning,research,analysis,evaluation,documentation,implementation,training,andmaintenance,aswellasdesign,inthepasttwodecades.Thebookitselfisathoroughtime‐capsuleofthefieldincorporatingthelatestphilosophies,principals,methods,andtechniques,asbesttheauthorsandweunderstandthem.Gonearereferencestovideodisksandspecificationmethodslikeuser‐actionnotation.Forthisnewgenerationofreaders,thebookreferencesblogs,thei‐Phone,socialnetworks,tagclouds,twitter,andYouTube.
Atthebeginningofthebook,theauthorsoffereightwaysofusingthebook,andspecificchaptersequencesforreaderscomingfromsuchdisciplinesascomputerscience(itscoreaudience),psychologyandsociology,businessandinformationsystems,eventechnicalwritingandgraphicdesign.Itseemsalmostimpossiblethatthebookcouldbeequallyusable,useful,andappealingtoallofthesegroups,butitmakesavaliantefforttoachievethisobjectivewithconsiderablesuccess.
Inalmosteverytopicthatittackles,thetextsummarizestheissueseffectivelyandprovidesspecificdetailsthatareoftenfoundinmorenarrow‐focusguidebooks.Takingasanexampleform‐designinformat‐specificfieldsonpage255,theauthorsremindusofthepatternforUSsocialsecuritynumbersandevenprovidethespecificationthat“Whentheuserhastypedthefirstthreedigits,thecursorshouldjumptotheleftmostpositionofthetwo‐digitfield.”Ofcourse,onecanarguethatthesekindsofexamplesarealittletooUS‐centric,butgiventheprimarymarket,theorientationisunderstandable.Fortelephonenumbers,theauthorscautiononthesamepage:“Bealerttospecialcases,suchastheadditionofextensionsortheneedfornonstandardformatsforinternationalnumbers.”Inafixed‐lengthbook,itwouldbeobviouslyimpossibletotreatallglobalcircumstances.
Inlaterchapters,theauthorstreatmoregenerallylarge‐scopetopics,likeinformationvisualization.Theycategorizeinformation‐visualizationdisplaysbysevendatatypes(1Dlinear,2Dmap,3Dworld,multi‐dimensional,temporal,tree,andnetwork)andseventasks(overview,zoom,filter,details‐on‐demand,relate,history,andextract).Hereitbecomesimpossibletoprovideextensivedetaileddesignguidelines;however,intriguingexamplesillustratedifferentapproaches.Again,itbecomesimpossibleinaprintedbooktoconstantlyupdatetheimages.Thus,inanotherpartofthebook,aKindle1.0appears,whichwillbealittledatedbythetimethat2010actuallyrollsaround(rememberthepublicationdate).Nevertheless,theimagesaresuccinct,appropriate,well‐selectedsupplementstothecleardescriptionsandexplanations.
Thereferenceshavebeenupdatednaturally,buttotheircredit,theauthorsactuallyretainafewchoicemorselsreachingbackasfarasthelate1980s,suggestingthattheyrecognizetheotherlevelsofreadership:theBabyBoomers,GenX‐ers,andtheMillenialswhoallwillbelookingatthistext,seekingsolutionsforthewidestandwildestchallengesofuser‐interfacedesigninthecomingdecade.
Inkeepingwiththeuser‐centereddesignapproachpromotedbythebook,Iaskedtwoofmyyounger(by30‐40years)Associates,whoareinterns,stillstudyingatgraduatelevel,whattheythoughtofthenewbook.Theyrepresentthenewcomerstothefieldwhomaynotbeawareofthefullrangeanddepthofuser‐interfacedevelopment,practice,andtheoryoverthepast60yearsandthroughouttheworld.
Oneremarked:“Uponreadingthroughthecontents,whatIfoundstrikingwasthelanguageinwhichthebookwaswritten.Rightfromthestart,itwasveryclear,concise,andeasytoread.Asanoviceofuser‐interfacedesign,IexpectedtobebombardwithtechnicaljargonthatIwouldn'tunderstand,but,surprisingly,theauthorshadnoneofthat(asfarasIcouldtell).Also,thevisualsplayedasignificantpartinfurtheringmyunderstandingofthealreadyreadablecontent.”
Theothercommented,“Overall,thebookwasagoodintroductiontothemeaningandimportanceofuser‐interfacedesign.However,Iwouldhavelikedtoseesomedefinitionsofterms,suchas’userexperience’,’userinterface‘,andperhapsabriefhistoryofuser‐experiencedesign.”Ofnoteisthesparsereferencetouser‐experience(UX)concepts,althoughtheyarecoveredasusabilityengineeringanduser‐interfacearchitectureconceptsandarementionedexplicitlyafewtimes.
Clearly,onecannotbeallthingstoallpeople;thesecondcommenttouchedononeortwoitemsthat,inmyopinion,mighthavebeengivenalittlemorespaceinan,admittedly,alreadybusyagenda.However,thesearequibbles.Thebookmaintainsitslegendaryvalueasaindispensable,readable,comprehensive,high‐qualitytreatmentofastillbustling,fast‐growing,world‐widefieldburstingwithenthusiasm,energy,andinnovation.Thisbookpresentsbothabird’seyeviewandaground‐levelviewoftheterrain.
