The Oregon Heritage of

Oregon Parks and Recreation

Department is offering grants

for the construction or restora-

tion of veterans and war

memorials.

“The program is designed to

honor Oregon’s soldiers and

veterans by commemorating

their service to the country,”

said Kuri Gill, coordinator for

the program. “Local govern-

ments may apply to build or

repair monuments on public

land.”

New monuments should

recognize veterans and wars

not already recognized. Grants

for restoration could be used

for broken monuments, miss-

ing elements of monuments or

the related design elements of

monuments for veterans or

earlier wars, such as World

War I.

Details and the application

information are available at

www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/F

INASST/Pages/grants.aspx.

The application deadline is

Dec. 15. For more informa-

tion, contact Kuri Gill at 503-

GRAY—Richard Gray, 89,

passed away peacefully Nov. 2,

2015, surrounded by his fami-

ly.

Dick was born March 12,

1926, in Oretown, Ore., to

Floyd and Gladys Gray. The

family moved around a lot, so

Dick attended many schools

including Mapleton, Siuslaw

and Minerva, up the North

Fork. He joined the Navy at the

age of 17, attending Radio

School at Texas A&M.

Dick won the heart of

Evelyn Etzel, who “didn’t like

that boy very much” growing

up, and they married Nov. 9,

1946. Together they raised

seven children and one grand-

child. They moved to Florence

in 1952, when Dick worked at

various sawmills around the

area. He was a supervisor at

Davidson’s when he retired in

1988. His children remember

him as the tallest and strongest

man in the world, the protector

of the family.

His sons will enjoy many

great memories of going hunt-

ing and fishing with Dad.

In his retirement, Dick

enjoyed golfing with his broth-

ers and mushroom hunting. In

his later years, the joy of his

life was his children, his grand-

children and his weekly poker

games at the Elks, where he

was a life member.

Dick was known for his

great smile, belly laugh and his

willingness to help his family

when they needed him. He was

the quintessential storyteller,

but not a slave to the facts.

He was preceded in death by

his parents; his sister, Betty

Lou Seifken; his brother,

Harley Gray; and his daughter

Cynthia.

He is survived by his wife,

Evelyn; his daughters: Debbie

Peterson and Teresa Bartlett;

sons: Jim, Matt, Dan, Tom and

grandson, Jeff; 19 other grand-

children and 21 great-grand-

children.

A private celebration of life

is planned for the summer.
