B.C. Conslike the pipelineNorthern Gateway pipeline project
good for B.C. says John Cummins
By NEIL HORNER
NEWS REPORTER
BC Conservative Party leader John Cummins says
the Northern Gateway pipeline project is important
to British Columbia and should go ahead — but that
doesn’t mean he would give it blanket approval.
In an interview in Parksville
on Saturday, Cummins said he
sees the pipeline as a good idea.
“It will get British Colum-
bian resources to the world
market,” he said.
“We will earn more for our
resources. Those pipelines are
important to the economy of
Canada and of British Colum-
bia.”Cummins took premier
Christy Clark to task for not
expressing support for the
Northern Gateway project,
waiting instead to hear the
results of an environmental
review.“Our view is that this is
good for British Columbia,” he
said. “There is a huge number
of jobs in the construction phase, and Lord knows, we
can use those jobs. As well, there will be ongoing ben-
efi ts to British Columbia afterwards.”
However, he stressed he would like to see a negotia-
tion to garner increased benefi ts for British Columbi-
ans.“We should be trying to negotiate some increased
benefi ts from the pipeline, when possible,” he said. “I
think government has to approach these projects and
work with industry and let industry know it supports
them, whether it be a pipeline or a mine.”
John Cummins.

The district now has a new online public forum run-
ning on their website at www.sd69.bc.ca.
While response has been slow so far, the board
is optimistic that as word gets out it will become a
continuation of the vibrant discussions going on in the
community over various school-related issues in the
past year.“It’s just another form of communication, I hope it
gets well used,” said trustee Julie Austin introducing
the feature at the last school board meeting.
They hope it will be used for ongoing construc-
tive discussions between everyone from students and
teachers to senior management and the board, parents
and the wider community in general.
It has been “kick started” with a handful of hot top-
ics like busing, budgeting and visioning and will add
other topics as they come up.
Four of the fi ve member board were newly elected
in November, having campaigned on a need for more
transparency and open communication between the
board and public.
They stressed that the online forum will be in addi-
tion to any other ongoing public forums and various
forms of communication, not replacing anything.
Click on the ‘Online Discussion Forum’ tab on the
district website at www.sd69.bc.ca to check it out.

OTTAWA (Canadian Press) Ottawa is warning Canadians against all travel to Yemen where clashes between government forces and protesters have turned violent. The foreign affairs department updated its travel advisory yesterday saying Canadians who are in the country should seriously consider leaving while com-mercial means are still available. The travel advisory said the level of risk is very
high and Canadian offi cials may not be able to provide consular assistance to Canadians in
some parts of the country.Yemen was hit by a wave of anti-government rallies in mid-February with protesters calling for
President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 32 years in power.
Al-Qaida is also very active in Yemen and several foiled terror attacks in the United States and else-where have been traced back to operatives based in the country.
Citing terrorism and civil unrest, the U.S. govern-ment on Sunday advised Americans not to travel to Yemen and said Americans in the impoverished Arabnation should leave.

CANADIANS ADVISED TO LEAVE YEMEN
PRINCE ANDREW UNDER FIRE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Yemeni protesters demand the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh during a demonstration yesterday.
LONDON (Associated Press) Less than two months before a fairytale wedding anticipated by much of the world, Britain’s royal fam-ily fi nds itself fi ghting an inconvenient distraction: revelations that Prince Andrew, the queen’s second son, is friends with a convicted sex offender, was photographed with a teenage prostitute, and has been accused of ties to Moammar Gadhafi ’s Libyan regime.
The Duke of York also hosted the son of the Tunisian dictator shortly before a popular uprising drove him from power – and the buildup of embar-rassment has sparked calls that he be stripped of his role as special U.K. trade representative.British offi cials have rallied to Andrew’s defence. The foreign secretary expressed his “confi dence” in Andrew yesterday, and a U.K. trade offi cial voiced support for the prince to remain in the posi-tion, saying he does a “very valuable job.”But pressure is mounting and there is growing speculation over how long Andrew can hang on to his post. The latest revelations in the British media have centred on Andrew’s friendship with con-victed pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and claims that Andrew also had close ties to Seif al-Islam Gadhafi , one of the Libyan leader’s sons.Photos recently published in the British media show Andrew strolling in a park with Epstein – the New York billionaire jailed for soliciting underage prosti-tutes in Florida. Most recently, a photograph emerged showing Andrew with his arm around the waist of the teenage prostitute at the centre of that case. There has been no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of Andrew.
