..FROM FR. KUNKEL Lent is a challenge for all of us. It is traditionally a
time when we give things up, or do a bit more. But during Lent it is
often easy to miss the point. Lent is not about devising cunning plans
to beat the system, or showing how good we are because we can do
without sweets. Lent is about drawing closer to God!
On Ash Wednesday you might have heard the words, “Turn
away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” This is exactly what
the next few weeks are all about - being more faithful to the Gospel
we believe in! Whatever we do, whether we give up something, or
do something extra, the whole point of it must be that it brings us
closer to God.
At the end of his forty days in the wilderness, Jesus had the
strength to trust completely in God. That is our goal also. Jesus was
able to resist temptation because he was never separated from God.
We, too, can resist temptation if we focus on God.
Over the next few weeks we must allow our Lenten observance
to turn our hearts and minds to God in a special way. At the end of
our forty days may we truly be able to say: “Yes, I have worshiped
the Lord my God, and served him, alone!” The temptations in the
desert called Jesus to cling to the old and forget the new. Instead,
Jesus chose conversion.
Let this first Sunday of Lent draw us to conversion. Let us toss
aside old patterns that speak of power, prestige, and manipulation.
Let us put on the new person that is Jesus - a person of service to
others, of prayer, and of mercy. Think about it!!
INSTRUMENTS OF CHRIST’S
PASSION AND DEATH St. Mary’s did revive last year an old Lenten tradition
in our parish. For each Mass during the Sundays in
Lent, a family may volunteer to participate in the
opening procession by bringing up one of the symbols
we associate with the Passion of Christ. Because the
Sacred Passion of Christ is the source of all of our
happiness and good, so the instruments of it are justly considered as
objects of our veneration. “If the Ark of the Covenant,” says St.
Jerome, “was held in such high veneration among the Jewish people,
how much more ought Christians respect the wood of the cross and
the other instruments of Christ’s passion, where on our Savior offered
himself a bleeding victim for our sins”. By devoutly respecting the
instruments of Christ’s passion during the Sundays of Lent, we
profess our faith in Him who suffered for us. We also excite our
hope in His merit, enkindle His love in our hearts and renew the
grateful remembrance of His death.
There are ten instruments that we will reflect on during the Primary
five Sundays of Lent: the Lamb and the Lance; The Whip and the
Crown of Thorns; The Jug of Wine and the Sponge; the Dice and the
Sign; and the Hammer and the Nails. These Sacred Instruments by
which our Redeemer triumphed over sin and death and purchased for
us mercy, grace, and salvation.
These symbols, of “Instruments of the Passion” will week by week
become part of the altar decorations during the season of Lent. For
instance, a figure of a lamb and a lance will be carried up during the
Masses on the First Sunday of Lent (February 14th ). Families
wishing to participate in this tradition may sign up on the roster
located in the vestibule of the church.
BAPTISM Through the Holy Waters of Baptism, we welcome
into St. Mary’s Faith Community…Jude Angelo
Warne, son of Matthew & Cara. And Lincoln
Edward dolly son of Richard & Victoria.
As Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert, the Church traditionally fasts during
Lent. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other
Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A
gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as we turn
away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel.
LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR
FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of
Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices
seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of
renewal of Baptism at Easter.
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all 18
years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On
a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to
maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is
not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of
abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work
would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Ash Wednesday, all
the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are days of abstinence.
NOTE: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill
health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are
encouraged.
THE DIVINE MERCY
SAINT FAUSTINA On October 5, 1938 a young religious by the name of Sister Faustina
died in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in
Cracow, Poland. She came from a very poor family that had struggled
hard on their little farm during the terrible years of World War I. Sister
had only three years of very simple education. Hers were the humblest
tasks in the convent, usually in the kitchen, the vegetable garden, or as
porter.
On February 22, 1931, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ appeared to
this simple nun bringing with Him a wonderful message of Mercy for all
humanity. As a special sign of His forgiving love, Jesus called for a Feast
of the Divine Mercy to be celebrated in the whole Church. We will do this
here at St. Mary’s on the Sunday after Easter. For each week of Lent, we
will be offering you a short reflection . These reflections are messages
from Saint Faustina’s diary
DEVOTION TO THE
DIVINE MERCY FIRST WEEK – WORKS OF MERCY (DIARY#742) I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me.
You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You
must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am
giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: The
first-by deed, the second-by word, the third-by prayer.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Fourth Month (size: about 9 inches)
The baby’s brain has begun maturing – a process that will continue
until she is about 14 years old. Her eyelids are now sealed shut and
will re-open at 7 months. Her taste buds are working. Nutrients
consumed by her mother are passed on to her within an hour or 2.
Three hundred quarts of fluid a day are sent to the baby via the
umbilical cord. Fine hair begins to grow on head, eyebrows and
eyelashes. Facial expressions similar to the baby’s parents can be
seen at this time. This month, REM (rapid eye movement) has been
recorded – a sign of dreaming.
ACTION: PRAY for the conversion of hearts to recognize the
sanctity of life from conception until natural death. Pray especially
for the Maryland General Assembly that they will not pass the End of
Life Options Act that will legalize physician-assisted suicide.
Contact Governor Hogan and your legislators to tell them you oppose
this bill.
