Our area is said to be the one piece of Lower Michigan that looks most like places that stir the soul with their natural beauty in the North. For those fortunate enough to call this place home, every day can bring a sigh of
amazement at nature’s beauty and a whisper of wonder at its majesty.Visitors who come to kayak or walk our trails, who swim in our 300 plus lakes or bike
and ski on our more than 20,000 acres of public land wish they could stay -- or make immediate plans to return.
Beyond nature, though, we offer similar charm with the life of culture, shopping, and dining offered in our communities. We celebrate every season with festivals, concerts, children’s activities, and more.
With this edition of 101+ Things to Do, we offer a guide to the fun, enjoyment, and satisfaction that awaits in our area whether you’re a resident or just lucky enough to be passing through. Use the calendar to plan, read the more detailed articles and use them to map a path of discovery.
You’ll be greeted with smiles and old-time handshakes, welcomes that express our gratitude for your choice to spend your time and invest your entertainment dollars with us. We love our natural beauty gifts and we’re happy to share them because, whether you’re a resident or just passing through, when you help promote our local economy, you allow us another lasting investment in our region.
Shop the ads and browse the highlights inside this year’s issue of 101+ Things to Do and we’ll look to welcome you with a good old-fashioned smile and handshake at one of our natural, cultural, and recreational wonders.

The Hastings City Band will continue its more than 150-year-old tradition of bringing music to visitors and residents through free summer concerts. The Wednesday concerts will be on the courthouse lawn June 12, 19, 26, and July 3 and 10, beginning at 7:30 pm.
The Hastings City Band and John Philip Sousa arrived the same decade — Sousa in 1854 and the musical group in
that works of The March King are part of the repertoire nearly every week. Musical pieces by contemporary composer James Swearingen also add to
HASTINGS CITY BAND CONTINUES SUMMER TRADITION
the weekly concerts, as does Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia on My Mind,” a favorite of conductor Joe LaJoye.
A mix of marches, big band pieces, ballads and contemporary tunes round out the free concerts, and guest performers often join the band.
As the calendar gets nearer to the Fourth of July, patriotic music is added to the play list, culminating with special recognition of veterans attending the concert just before July 4.
Although the band plays in Hastings, the volunteer musicians who make up the
band hail also from Delton, Middleville, Lake Odessa and many other communities. Any musicians high school age or older who are interested in joining the band need only show up at the Hastings High School band room the Tuesday prior to the concert at 7:30 pm.
Concert-goers should bring along chairs or blankets to sit on.
In the event of rain, concerts will be at the Barry Community Foundation building (formerly the First Presbyterian Church) in the former Leason Sharpe Hall.
After several years of performing at Fish Hatchery Park, the Hastings City Band last year returned to its original venue, the Barry County Courthouse lawn.

There is also a full Italian meal served at the Misner House Museum yard. Participants may eat after or in the middle of their ride. Non-participants may buy lunch for $20. All fees will be used toward renovations in Fallasburg Village, particularly two stone foundations on a barn and townhouse.
Cost to participate is $25 individual/ $35 family; after July 1, 2013 - $30/$40.

The Riverwalk Festival enters its 19th year, which started as a fundraiser when the Township decided to hire
employee.At that time they
held it on Labor day Weekend, and it was quite a bit different then it is now. The only thing we still do is the arts and craft and the duck race.
For Liz Baker, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, the past 19 years have been a blur.
“Today Riverwalk is the Chamber of Commerce’s major fundraiser and at the same time it has grown into a really fun family festival in Lowell,” Baker said. “Many other events have sprouted since then.”
This year the festival added a motorcycle ride and rumble, and a parade where people on the sidelines give out canned food for donation, instead of candy.
“We do pontoon rides, kayak and canoe racing,” Baker said. “We have entertainment as well. This year we will be doing something a little different with open mic, where people can come up to the stage and demonstrate their talents.”
Baker has called the festival a three day event, which has become one full day and two

nights that takes summer concerts and roll it into one.
The Kent County Youth Fair royal court will be hosting a royal court breakfast, and are planning on hosting it on the showboat.
“We have to wait to see of the showboat is deemed safe to use,” Baker said. “We have had some issues that we have had to address because of the

Fireworks from Stoney Lakeside will begin at 10:15 pm sharp after the 5 pm duck race on the river.
Pre-numbered tickets will be sold for the duck race which goes in the river for a chance to be a $1,000 winner.
“The last couple of years the duck sales haven’t been great,” Baker said. “We’ve always been right around 6,000-6,500 ducks.”
There will be a photo-booth run by Modern Photographics, where a ticket purchased for the duck race can be used to get a free picture taken.
The two decade old festival will provide a food court which will include a pizza cart run by Flat River Grill, with a few other local businesses contributing with vendors.

The farmer’s market that Lowell is so accustomed to seeing in the spring has made several changes.
The market will begin June 13 and run through Sept. 12, cutting nearly two months farmers had to sell portions of their crops.
The reason for excluding
NEW HOURS FOR LOWELL FARMERS MARKETthe eight weeks is due to the amount of competition, with every small town that now have markets of their own.
The Lowell market started at the fairgrounds and drew
until Ada opened a market on Tuesdays.
Market Masters Dave and Betty Dean revealed additional changes, which included the
was only allowed at the farmer’s market once a month. Now it will return regularly every week.
“We did try it last year, only doing it once a month and the people liked it,” Betty said. “They came to the market and
from it.”
The market used to open in May and was held until the second week in October, but now it is expected to end in September, right after school begins in the area.
The market will still take place at the Tractor Supply parking lot, where it has been for the last couple of years. Around a dozen vendors are expected this year for the market which will be held every Thursday afternoon.
Closing in on their third year as market masters and their eighth year in participation, the Deans will be allowing the community booth again to expose local programs which included FROM, the library and the museum last year.

The Kent Count Youth Fair will see new additions to its schedule which will include dueling pianists and a professional sand sculpturor.
The week-long fair will take
place from August 5-10 at the Kent County Fair Grounds with an opening ceremony on August 4.
VP of the KCYF Bruce Doll has been waiting for this year’s fair for quite some time.
“This year we are doing some things differently with entertainment,” Doll said. “We are going to convert the entertainment tent into a lounging area.”
Tuesday evening will include the Mid-West dueling pianists, featuring some gentlemen who bring in two pianos and take requests.
“Swing dancing will be held on Wednesday,” Doll said. “We are going to have instruction and music.”
The professional sand sculpturor will be Lucinda “Happy Feet” Wierenga who
KENT COUNTY YOUTH FAIR SCHEDULE IS SEThas been in over a hundred competitions in the past decade. She is going to be conducting classes and seminars all day.
“Lucinda is going to be doing different sand sculptures and
we are going to have her all week long to be offering up some seminars and classes on how to do that for kids.,” Doll said. “She goes way beyond sand castles.”
Reading for Rides will be coming back, Doll said, where the KCYF works with the libraries all over Kent County and invites kids to read
form and bring it in on Tuesday for the kids to ride for free.
“It is generally crowded and we could have upward to 3,000 people wanting to ride at the same time,” Doll said with last year’s fair in mind.
The opening ceremony will be Sunday, August 4, and will include the Royal Court Coronation and a dedication of the Ron Winger Memorial Play Structure, in honor of the previous
fair manager who passed away. The hours of the fair are
from 8 am to 11 pm, however, most of the barns will close at 10 pm.
Daily parking is $6 per day, or $18 for the week, with no gate or admission fee.
Parking on Saturday, August 10 from 9 am to 12 pm is $1 with a donation of 3 or more nonperishable food items.
Items will be donated to F.R.O.M. as part of the Dream Big National Food Drive, organized by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. The goal for the fair is to raise 20,000,000 pounds of food for local food banks everywhere.
People interested in the full schedule and activities can visit the fair’s website at www.kcyf.org for more information.
