1. Project Name: 21st Century Media Center
2. Project Number: 10
3. Campus Name: Truman Elementary
4. Project Description:
This school Building Leadership Team reviewed the Facilities Needs Analysis prepared by Shive-
Hattery and narrowed the focus to areas to the greatest concerns with the biggest long term impact on
student learning. A brief survey was developed and feedback was solicited from all stakeholders (staff,
students, parents, and community groups/ partners (PTO, YMCA, Scouts, CR Family Church). This
project proposal derived from an analysis and consideration of all stakeholder feedback. This school
would like to build a 21st Century Learning Center and repurpose the existing Library Media Center to
give students, staff, parents, and community partner’s functional spaces to learn, meet, and work. The
proposed space would be equipped with flexible furnishings to accommodate a variety of groups,
resources, mobile technology, storage, restrooms, and handicap accessibility. We need a new space to
improve the overall building function, accessibility, safety, in addition to improving the educational
opportunities for our students.
5. Project Objectives:
The creation of a 21st Century Learning Center provides the space and the tools necessary to assist
teachers in instructing technology literacy, tools to seek and filter information, space for students to
work together to problem solve/research, soft reading spaces and space for teachers, parents, and
community groups to meet, work, and collaborate. Cooperative learning produces higher achievement,
better comprehension, and fosters positive relationships. The creation of this space would give options
for extending learning beyond the classroom and school day. The objectives for this project are focused
on three areas
1. Create a welcoming, flexible, safe, multipurpose space used during and beyond the school day for
learning, presentations, meetings, and to house resources /technology. (Currently our LMC can
only accommodate one classroom at a time and has no space for small or large groups to meet to
work and collaborate).
2. Repurpose the existing LMC to create space for small group learning, meeting spaces for our staff,
parents, and outside agencies, add handicap accessible restrooms, and create storage for special
needs equipment. (Currently teachers and volunteers work in the hallways, we have 14 handicap
students and no handicap accessible restrooms. The special needs equipment is stored in the
hallway).
3. Increase the technology/wireless technology to allow for students to have access to technology as
they need it. (Presently, students are only using computers once or twice a week due to the
availability. We would like technology/wireless to be accessed during and beyond the school day).

6. General Information:
The current Library Media Center is flanked by two main hallways which interfere with student learning/
testing due to the constant noise and movement. The LMC does not have space or flexibility for groups
to meet and work together on a project. Hallways are used every day for instruction, meeting with
students/parents, and the storage of equipment, this presents safety issues. Our school does not have
a space for the Gifted and Talented, Spanish, GWAEA, volunteers, community counselors, ABBE, Title
1 Reading, YMCA daycare, and PTO. Every space is shared and used for a dual purpose.
7. Summary:
By creating a 21st Century Learning Center it provides the space and tools necessary to assist
teachers/students in technology literacy, space for students to work together to problem solve/research,
soft reading areas and space for teachers, parents, and community groups to meet, work, and collaborate.
Cooperative learning produces higher achievement, better comprehension, and fosters positive
relationships. The creation of this space would give options for extending learning beyond the classroom
and with our YMCA daycare students. It would also solve other needs in the building by then reusing the
current Library Media Center (LMC) to create space for additional uses.
8. Project Outcomes:
Outcomes will be measured through a climate survey, technology usage, and student achievement data
collected annually, for three consecutive years. The Building Leadership Team will compare student
achievement data prior to and after the addition of the 21st Century Learning Center. BLT will track use of
technology, website, facility, and climate data to compare and determine the evidence of impact. Projected
Outcomes:
1. Improved student achievement on computerized assessments
2. Increased student proficiency in the area of technology literacy
3. Increased use of technology and resources
4. Higher school climate and safety ratings
5. 5. ADA compliance
