(3/01) 1-1
1 Introduction
0970C Gas Cylinder
ScaleThe Model 0970C scale is designed for weighing gas cylinders that exert a distributed
load while centered on the upper loading plate. It consists of a 250-kg torsion ring loadcell attached to a mounting plate (bottom) and a loading plate (top). A mounting bolt
transfers weight from the loading plate to the load cell. A set screw is located at eachcorner of the scale to protect the load cell against overloading.

1. Load cell and suspension assembly
2. Load cell cable
3. Platform assembly and overload stop screws
If you find damage, contact your freight carrier immediately.
Site SelectionInstallation problems are often caused by inappropriate site conditions. Before installingthe scale, make sure the site meets the following criteria:
The support surface of the cabinet or other structure on which the scale will be
installed should be level.
The cabinet or other structure must be strong enough to support a fully loadedscale.
No heavy vibrations or wind currents at or near the scale.
No excessive or unusual loading caused by the site or equipment.
Access to the load cell for service.
A location near the scale to mount the indicator.
If the site meets the criteria listed here, proceed with the installation. Otherwise, make thenecessary adjustments before installing the scale.

3 Installation
General Guidelines
WARNINGIF USED IN A HAZARDOUS AREA, THE HAZARDOUSAREA MUST BE MADE SAFE PRIOR TO INSTALLATION,REPLACEMENT, OR TROUBLESHOOTING. FAILURE TO
COMPLY COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY,DEATH, AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
Do Not Cut the Load Cell Cable
Cutting the load cell cable will affect compensation and void the warranty.
Protect the Load Cell from Damage
Load cells can be damaged if too much weight is placed on them. To protect theload cells, the scale has an overload stop at each corner. The overload gaps areset at the factory and should be maintained at the factory setting: 1/16" (1 mm).
Figure 3-1: Overload Stop Gaps
InstallationThe 0970C gas cylinder scale is delivered fully assembled. The following instructionsexplain how to set it up and connect it to a scale indicator.
1. Remove all packing material from the scale.
2. Position the scale on the cabinet or other structure where it will be used.
Make sure that the loading plate faces upward. This is the square plate with the
jam nut located in the center of it (see Figure 3-1).
Make sure that the surface of the loading plate is level. Adjust the cabinet or
support structure to level the plate if necessary.

Make sure the loading plate does not touch any surrounding structure.
Make sure that there is room to route the load cell cable to where the indicator
will be mounted. The load cell cable should not be pulled tight and should notbe pinched by the scale assembly or surrounding structures.
3. Connect the load cell cable to the terminals inside the scale indicator according tothe wiring codes shown in Table 3-1.
Note:The load cell is supplied with a standard length of cable (5 meters). Do not
lengthen or shorten load cell cables in the field! Changing the length of a load cell
cable will affect compensation and void the warranty. If a cable is too long,
simply coil the excess cable and place it near the scale indicator. Nonstandardlengths of cable can be ordered for applications that require them.

4 Routine Care and Maintenance
GeneralOnce you have installed your scale, you should have an authorized METTLER TOLEDOservice representative periodically inspect and calibrate it. If the scale is used for legal-for-trade purposes, consult the local weights and measures authorities for minimum
inspection requirements. Contact your local authorized METTLER TOLEDO servicerepresentative for information about periodic inspection and calibration services.
Site InspectionMake sure that the scale site remains in good condition. Check for the following:
Overloading or excessive vibration
Build-up of debris or material under or around the scale that could prevent the scale
from moving freely
Scale InspectionDuring periodic inspections of the scale, check the following:
Signs of unusual wear to the load cell or loading plate
Binding between the loading plate and surrounding structure
Load cell cable: Is it damaged? Does it bind the scale?
Repeatability of the scale

5 Troubleshooting
General
WARNINGPERMIT ONLY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL TO SERVICETHIS EQUIPMENT. EXERCISE CARE WHEN MAKINGCHECKS, TESTS, AND ADJUSTMENTS THAT MUST BEMADE WITH POWER ON. FAILING TO OBSERVE THESEPRECAUTIONS CAN RESULT IN BODILY HARM.
CAUTIONBEFORE CONNECTING/DISCONNECTING ANY INTERNAL ELECTRONIC
COMPONENTS OR INTERCONNECTING WIRING BETWEEN ELECTRONIC
EQUIPMENT, ALWAYS REMOVE POWER AND WAIT AT LEAST 30 SECONDS.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THESE PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN BODILY
HARM OR DAMAGE TO OR DESTRUCTION OF THE EQUIPMENT.
WARNINGIF USED IN A HAZARDOUS AREA, THE HAZARDOUSAREA MUST BE MADE SAFE PRIOR TO INSTALLATION,REPLACEMENT, OR TROUBLESHOOTING. FAILURE TOCOMPLY COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY,DEATH, AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
If a scale is not working properly, find out as much about the problem as possible. Try
to determine whether the problem is constant or intermittent. Mechanical and electricalinfluences can cause malfunctions, so be patient and use sound logic whentroubleshooting.
Check the load cell cable for damage and check all connections for any loose/incorrect
wiring. Examine the physical location of the scale, checking for the following:
Water
Corrosive materials
Unlevel floors
High vibrations
Air currents
Physical damage to the scale

Isolate the ProblemTo determine whether the problem is in the scale or the digital indicator:
1. Remove power from the system.
2. Disconnect the indicator from the scale, and connect the indicator to a load cellsimulator (analog load cell simulators are available from METTLER TOLEDO).
3. Reapply power. If the problem persists, consult the indicator manual for furthertroubleshooting assistance.
4. If the problem is NOT present with the load cell simulator attached to the indicator, remove power, disconnect the simulator, and reconnect the scale. If the problem
persists, continue troubleshooting the scale.
Check Wiring1. Remove power from the indicator.
2. Make sure that the cable is connected tightly to the load cell.
3. Open the indicators enclosure and make sure that all wiring connections are tight
and that no insulation material is touching the terminal contacts.
4. Check all cable connections for correct wiring. The wiring color codes are given in
Table 5-1.
5. Make sure that the trim resistor is still installed on the white (- Signal) load cell wire.
6. Check all cable connectors and cord grip caps on the indicator. Tighten any looseconnectors.

Chapter 5: TroubleshootingCheck Load Cell
(3/01) 5-3
Check Load Cell1. Remove power from the indicator. Disconnect the load cell from the indicator and
check for proper input/output resistances (see Table 5-2).
Measuring Points Resistance
Any lead to shield or ground Infinity
+Exc (Pink) to -Exc (Gray) 1,050 to 1,150 ohms
+Sig (Brown) to -Sig (White) 975 to 1,075 ohms
Table 5-2: Load Cell Measuring Points
2. If resistance is within specification, perform a shorted-signal symmetry test.
Short the signal leads together and place one multimeter lead on the shortedsignals and one lead on the +Excitation wire. Note the resistance value.
Remove the lead from the +Excitation wire and place it on the Excitation wire. The two resistance values should be approximately equal.
3. If the load cell passes the shorted-signal test, reconnect it and reapply power to thescale. Confirm that the proper excitation voltage is reaching the load cell by placing
multimeter leads on the excitation positions of each load cell terminal.
4. If proper excitation voltage is reaching the load cell, check the output signal from
the cell by disconnecting the signal leads and measuring voltage output. If thedead-load output is particularly high or low, the load cell is suspect. The maximum
output possible from any cell is 26.25 mV at 15 VDC excitation and loaded togross capacity.
5. If the load cell has an unusual signal, remove all load from the cell.
With the power on, measure the output from the load cell. The no-load zero
output should be 1.5% of the full scale output. For example, if the excitationvoltage is 15 VDC, then the full scale output would be 30 mV and the no-load
zero output should be within 0.45 mV.
6. If the load cell fails any of the above tests, replace it.
Check Mechanical
ComponentsBecause the 0970C scale design is so simple, only a few mechanical components
require troubleshooting. Check the following:
Check the scale to make sure no parts are bent or worn.
Make sure the loading plate is level and does not bind with the surroundingstructure.
Check the overload stop gaps.
