Negli ultimi tre anni ne era sempre mancato qualcuno…
Nel 2013 primo Nibali, secondo Froome, terzo Contador. Nel 2014 primo Contador. Vi basta, no?

The four champions of the cycling world for the 50° edition
Turning 50 this year. The story of the Tirreno-Adriatico began in 1966, when Dino Zandegù outdid Vito Taccone. The marvel has grown, year after year. To celebrate its 50th birthday, the Race of the Two Seas will turn epic. Vincenzo Nibali, the king of the Tour, will be fighting against Spain’s Alberto Contador, Britain’s Chris Froome and Colombia’s Nairo Quintana. There is nothing better in the world – never has there been. The “four tenors” of cycling have never challenged each other in the same race before. At least one of them was missing in the last three years…
First place for Nibali, second place for Froome and third place for Contador in 2013. In 2014, Contador prevailed. That is all one needs to say, isn’t it? From the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic Sea, this race is the smartest and most contemporary way of designing stage routes in cycling. It celebrates the best of Italy, thanks to a territory that allows riders not only to challenge themselves and each other, but also to have a great time (we are quite sure) in such a varied and diverse landscape. The importance of the race lies in figures: live coverage in 154 countries, with as many as 5 million people reached in seven stages. Moreover, let us not forget that the Tirreno-Adriatico was the Italian cycling event with the highest-quality participants in the last two seasons. A jewel we must be proud of.
The structure stays the same, with two time trials (a 22-km TTT, and the final 10-km ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto), two sprinter stages (Cascina and Porto Sant’Elpidio), one stage for puncheurs (Arezzo), a medium-mountain stage (Castelraimondo) and a real mountain stage, just like at the Giro d’Italia. This time Mount Terminillo, Rome’s mountain, one of the sharpest climbs of central Italy, will be decisive. The Giro made its way up here nine times, most recently in 2010. Climbing up the northern slope, we are in for a 15.4-km ascent with an average 6.1% gradient, peaking as high as 10%. After all, a conventional and ordinary location would not have been a suitable battleground for the “Fab Four” of cycling.

Lido di Camaiore is one of the major tourist locations of Versilia, a symbol of the vitality of this area. The “Bellavista Vittoria” pier, with its round terrace over the sea, is a must-see for all tourists and has become the symbol of the city, which has been one of the most renowned seaside resorts of the whole Tyrrhenian coast since the 1960s.Lido di Camaiore is enjoyable at daytime, but it bursts into life especially after dusk, with its many bars and clubs, and its very lively nightlife, particularly along the promenade.

Percorso
Route
This team time trial is composed of two virtually straight sectors, rolling along the two lanes of the same road. Halfway is a slightly more intricate and complicated “turning point”. The stage course runs straight for 9.5 km, and then gets to the turning point in Forte dei Marmi, where split time is taken. The route then runs on narrowed roadway, takes two left-hand 90-degree turns leading back to the Forte dei Marmi promenade 14 km before the finish, then leads back to Lido di Camaiore.

Ultimi km
Last km
The last 5 kilometres roll along flat, straight roads (southbound). With 1.200 metres to the finish, a right/left S-shaped curve on narrowed roadway, leading to the 1-km long home stretch, marks the only complication. The finish line is on 6.5-m wide, asphalted roadway.

From the turquoise blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the emerald green hills, surrounded by the Apuan Alps, the Municipality of Camaiore is a microcosm of contrasting yet harmonizing colours, all the shades of a territory ranging from the mountain to the sea. A land whose many flavours and traditions reflect the character of its dwellers: strong yet friendly, lively and welcoming. “Popular culture” is kept alive and passed down by the many folkloristic events that take place throughout the year, including: “È la via dell’orto”, an event dedicated to vegetable gardens, seeds and herbs (April, first decade); “Coloured sawdust carpets” (during the Corpus Christi Feast); the “Festival Gaber” (July, dedicated to the unforgettable Italian singer Giorgio Gaber); “Follie d’altri tempi”, a market exhibition of antiques, modern art, vintage vehicles and spare parts (mid-August week); the “Festival degli artisti di strada” (Buskers’ Festival, September); the “Festa Pic”, celebrating culinary arts, culture and chilli pepper (October). Special mention should be made of the solemn “Triennale del Gesù Morto”, a procession commemorating Jesus’ death, taking place every three years on Good Friday: thousands of small oil lamps light up the roads and the houses of the old town, creating a uniquely suggestive and spiritual atmosphere. Tradition goes hand in hand with cuisine. Camaiore can boast a rich and varied array of local delicacies, such as zuppa alla frantoiana (a vegetable soup), torta di pepe (a typical savoury pie), a tasty chocolate cake and scarpaccia (a zucchini quiche). All this is the result of a long history, starting in prehistoric ages, as revealed by the Grotta all’Onda and Candalla archaeological sites. In the Middle Ages, Camaiore was an important station of the Via Francigena: the old “Badia di S.S. Pietro e Paolo” Benedictine monastery, nearby, an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture, provided pilgrims with shelter and food. Camaiore has maintained part of its ancient walls to the present day, together with its old urban layout whose centre is represented by Piazza San Bernardino, hosting the town hall and the collegiate church.

Route
The stage is wavy in the first part, and flat at the end. The stage profile is more challenging in the first 50 km, with two KOM climbs (Mount Pitoro is climbed twice). In the first part, the route covers the traditional Camaiore circuit once (with an intermediate sprint set in Camaiore). The course then heads towards Pontedera and Ponsacco, and ultimately takes the final 20.6 km circuit, to be covered twice, before the finish in Cascina (the fixed feed zone is located in Ponsacco, and the second intermediate sprint upon the first passage in Cascina).

Cascina

Cascina is world-renowned not only for being the scene of a battle between the armies of Pisa and Florence away back in 1364, depicted by Michelangelo and Vasari, but also for the woodworking skills of its carpenters. Back in Renaissance times, the village was teeming with workshops. In the last century, the city dwellers turned into successful furniture makers and, more recently, specialized in interior furnishings for yachts and ships. Tradition also plays a major role in local cuisine, which offers delicacies such as Tuscan croutons, stews, wild game, and fish as well; tasty dishes to be paired with an equally delicious wine – one would be spoilt for choice (Bianco Pisano di San Torpè, Chianti, Montescudaio, and Vin Santo).Cascina is a village of Roman origin, as its grid plan reveals. It played a major role in the Middle Ages, being strategically positioned along the road linking Florence and Pisa.On the one hand, this was the reason of the town’s richness, but it also caused the village to be ravaged multiple times. Nevertheless, many historic buildings survived to the present day, making the old town very fascinating for its religious (Pieve di San Giovanni e Santa Maria Assunta, an example of Pisan Romanesque art; the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the 14th century), military (the city walls and the clock tower), and civil buildings (the villas and palaces in the city centre and in the surrounding hamlets).

Route
Just a few difficulties along this stage route (over 200 km). The first part features two KOM climbs, in San Casciano Val di Pesa (San Martino) and in Poggio alla Croce, and an intermediate sprint in Castelfranco di Sopra, before the fixed feed zone, set in Loro Ciuffenna. The final part of the stage is wavier and more complicated, in terms of both course and profile, with a final circuit. After passing Laterina, the stage course runs across Indicatore, where the second intermediate sprint is set; long, straight roads lead back to Arezzo. There begins the final 11-km circuit, to be covered 5 times.

The final circuit rolls along city roads. A quick descent, with a series of wide bends, leads to the city stadium. The route then takes ss. 73, up to 3 km from the finish, where it enters the centre and winds along the city roads, with traffic dividers and roundabouts. With one kilometre to go, the route features two right-hand bends on wide roundabouts, and crosses a medieval gate. A short, steep uphill sector leads (first on asphalted roadway, then on stone slabs) to the uphill 200-m home stretch (with a gradient around 5%) on 6-m wide, stone-paved roadway.

Circuito finale cittadino.

Founded in the 9th century by the Etruscans, who named it Aritim, Arezzo is a real open-air museum. The city centre has a medieval plan, and is surrounded by ancient walls. Its many monuments – just like shrines enclosing masterpieces by artists such as Cimabue, Piero della Francesca, Andrea della Robbia and Giorgio Vasari – speak to centuries of art and history. Even though religious buildings, like the Duomo, the church of San Domenico, the Basilica of San Francesco, the churches of Santissima Annunziata and Santa Maria delle Grazie, are guardians to most of the city’s treasures, the many private and public buildings, which have been the setting of the city’s life and politics for centuries, and survived – well preserved – to the present day, are equally noteworthy. The journey to discover Arezzo’s artistic heritage definitely includes a visit to the city’s many museums (the Archaeological Museum, the State Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Museo Diocesano, Ivan Bruschi House and Museum, the House of Petrarch, Vasari House and Museum). Every little bit of Arezzo will surprise you: the Medici Fortress (Fortezza Medicea) offers a breath-taking view, while the “Prato”, the oldest park of the city and an archaeologically relevant area, is bound to leave you breathless with its centuries-old trees. From the remains of ancient Etruscan temples, to the elegance of Romanesque parish churches, to the splendour of Renaissance times, Arezzo tells an age-old history and culture, which historical re-enactments such as the Giostra del Saracino help promote and keep alive. The images of Arezzo also went round the world thanks to Roberto Benigni, who decided to shoot the opening sequence of his Oscar-winning movie La vita è bella (Life is beautiful) in this charming city.

The hamlet of Indicatore, one of the 99 communities composing the district of Arezzo, lies 8 km away from the chief town. Located in the innermost part of Tuscany, and not far from Umbria, the village is obviously influenced by these two regions, especially in terms of food and wine tradition.Poultry and pork meat, spinach and beans, ricotta and pecorino cheese, olive oil and nutmeg are the main ingredients of the best-known local dishes. Such a varied cuisine is an evidence of diverse regional influences from the surrounding areas. If you feel like tasting a wholly local menu, you can start with croutons spread with minced meat, liver, anchovies and capers, or a chickpea focaccia with Casentino ham. First courses include Acquacotta (a bread soup with eggs, grated cheese and mushroom broth) and Panzanella (soaked stale bread with onions, cucumber and tomatoes, dressed with olive oil and vinegar). Scottiglia, a mixed meat stew, slow-cooked in a crock pan with tomatoes and vegetables, is a must-taste main course. Wines such as Chianti dei Colli Aretini or Bianco Vergine di Valdichiana will be a perfect pair for such a meal.

Route
This is the first mountain stage of the 2015 edition of the Tirreno Adriatico, and the longest one as well (226 km). The first, wavy part (with a climb up Foce dello Scopetone just 13.4 km after the start) runs through Gubbio, where the first intermediate sprint is set, then heads towards Fabriano (intermediate sprint) and leads to the second, highly challenging part of the stage. The route climbs up Poggio San Romualdo (Superior KOM climb) then hits Castelraimondo, after a few ascents and descents, and eventually enters the demanding final Crispiero circuit. The roadway is wide and well surfaced up to Fabriano, narrowed and occasionally worn out in the following mountain sector.

The final circuit features two passages over the Crispiero climb (3.1 km with a gradient of 9.3%, peaking as high as 15% in the final stretch) on narrow and steep roadway, which – after the KOM climb – leads to a very fast descent towards Castelraimondo on wider, occasionally worn out roadway. The descent ends 500 m before the finish line, which is located slightly uphill, after a 250 m stretch on 6.5-m wide, asphalted roadway.

The Cassero, a medieval watchtower, reaching over 38 metres in height, stands as symbol of Castelraimondo, a municipality in the Province of Macerata, lying almost at the edge of the upper valley of the Potenza River. The tower is one of the last remains of a glorious and suggestive past. The village, whose fortified centre was built in the early 14th century, was almost entirely destroyed: infighting during the Renaissance period, natural disasters and urban redevelopment in the early 20th century wiped away the old urban layout of the village, and both the church of San Bartolomeo and the Cappella della Maestà were destroyed (amongst other things). Only part of the castle walls, the main building – which was turned into a parish house throughout the centuries – and the Cassero watchtower have survived to the present day. Nevertheless, Castelraimondo was able to maintain continuity with its past and history by keeping ancient traditions alive, such as the Infiorata (flower carpet) during the Corpus Christi Feast. In the 19th-20th century, Castelraimondo was also famous for its “cocciari” (master potters) and blacksmiths.Notable citizens of Castelraimondo include Nazareno Strampelli – scientist, geneticist and Senator of the Kingdom, Giuseppe Gariboldi – flutist, and Ugo Bottacchiari – composer.

If we were to describe the qualities of Esanatoglia, a town in the Marche inland, and its dwellers, we would mention creativity, imagination and the constant will of pushing beyond any limit. Wide natural spaces are home to a population with a penchant for art, and an innovative mind-set. These have always been the distinguishing features of the village dwellers, from Diotallevi di Angeluccio – with his unique and modern-looking aediculae, to Lorenzo Taccaroni and his marvellous woodcarvings, to futurist painter and architect Ivo Pannaggi, whose decors turned Casa Zampini into an extraordinary one-off artwork: his theory of everyday life translated into art ultimately made real. All these artists lived in different times, but they share the same rule-defying creativity, which has always found breeding ground here in Esanatoglia. eccezionale unicum artistico, concretizzazione della sua teoria del quotidiano trasformato in arte.

This second mountain stage features a “Superior” mountain finish. The stage course is initially very dynamic, climbing up towards the Morca passage, then going down towards Fiuminata and up again, to Montelago/Passo Sallegri (KOM climb). The route runs down to Pieve Torina (intermediate sprint), climbs up the Arette passage (quite a steep ascent in the final part) and then down, once more, towards Ussita and Visso (a sharp descent). A milder sector follows, on apparently flat ground (actually slightly downhill), leading towards Arrone, where the route then climbs the pass (Forca) of the same name, runs through the Rieti plain to reach Castelfranco (intermediate sprint) and Vazia, where the final climb begins. The final ascent from Vazia to Mount Terminillo (Campoforogna) is 16.1-km long, with a 7.3% gradient (reaching as high as 12%).

Last km
The last kilometres of the stage correspond to the final Mount Terminillo ascent. This climb features two long stretches with a constant slope of about 7.5-8%, separated by less than two kilometres with a 3-4% gradient in Pian di Rosce. The two steep sectors have no punchy bits, but they have no mild stretches, either. Over the last few hundred metres, the gradients are lower than the rest of the climb. The home stretch in Campoforogna is 200 m long, on 7-m wide, asphalted and slightly uphill (2-3%) roadway.

Long and sharp peaks, rocky spurs, sharp edges and wide slopes are the distinguishing features of Mount Terminillo today. Originally, the mountain was home to a glacier, which has shaped the massif since ancient times. The massif has three main summits: Terminillo itself, Terminilletto (2,108 m) and Terminilluccio (1,870 m). This grandiose mountain range rises between the Rieti plain and the Leonessa plateau, and is crossed by the Velino River, whose curvy stream digs narrow ravines along the mount’s slopes. Many perennial springs flow from all around the massif, and serve as the main water resource for the surrounding residential areas. Mount Terminillo welcomes visitors with its charming landscape, marked by sharp peaks, long valleys and luxuriant vegetation. Thousands of different shades, the many scents of local flora (juniper, gentians, blueberries, wild strawberries, and beech trees), a feeling of peace and purity, an innate beauty and unique charm make Mount Terminillo a perfect destination for a holiday or just for a day trip to revive both your body and your mind.Sports lovers will find first-class sports facilities here, including ski slopes and trekking or mountain biking trails. A vast range of options, both for winter- and summertime, to have fun in close contact with nature.
That same nature so cherished by Saint Francis, who spent most of his life here, where relevant proofs of his passage and echoes of his message can still be found.

Lying in a fertile plain on the slopes of Mount Terminillo, on the banks of the Velino River, Rieti is known as Umbilicus Italiae, as it is considered the geographical centre of Italy. Large crowds of pilgrims have come here for centuries to follow the St. Francis Way.You cannot think of Rieti without picturing its majestic circle of walls, which can be seen from most city roads, and reveals the history of the town.Just the northern and eastern sections of the Medieval walls (dating from the first half of the 13th century – early 14th century) have been completely preserved to the present day, and just a few of the many former city gates are still open, namely Porta Romana, Porta D’Arci and Porta Conca. Others have been closed off, such as the gate which was integrated in St. Benedict’s Monastery and the so-called “porta murata” (walled-up gate), where San Liberatore church was erected. The picturesque old town centre rests on a small hilltop, at the edge of the valley named Conca Reatina, and it unfolds around Piazza San Rufo, which is traditionally considered to be the exact centre of Italy. South of the old town flows the Velino River, which is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, where geese and mallards nest.

Altimetria generale / Stage profile
RouteThe stage is divided into two parts: the first one running through the Apennines, up to the outskirts of Porto Sant’Elpidio, and the second one, more intricate, featuring a final circuit to be covered twice. In the first part, the stage course runs along Via Salaria up to the Torretta pass, then it climbs down, reaching the outskirts of Ascoli Piceno and – rolling through a few side-valleys – it heads towards the province of Fermo. The route rolls past Roccafluvione (where the fixed feed zone is set), Montelparo (KOM climb) and Monteleone di Fermo (intermediate sprint). Just past Campiglione (right outside Fermo), the stage course enters the final circuit (virtually trouble-free) getting to the finish line for the first passage, which marks the beginning of the two final circuit laps.

The final circuit is 14.4-km long, basically on flat ground. The first part is quite intricate, while the last 6 km are virtually straight. After crossing the finish line, the course goes back to the Adriatica highway, and then it runs up towards the industrial zone. The route goes back to the highway and crosses the entire city centre. With 1,600 m to the finish, the last two right-hand bends, separated by an underpass, lead to the home stretch: 1,500 m on 7.5-m wide, asphalted roadway.
Ultimi km

OPUSCOLO_interno.indd 1 09/02/15 14:56

Although some excavations revealed the presence of Etruscan burial sites, the history of this town in the Marches region is relatively short (16th century), and it was not until the 1950s that Sant’Elpidio obtained communal independence. The town’s main historical and artistic sights include its many mansions – such as Villa Murri, Villa Maroni, Villa Baruchello and Villa Fanny – and the Annunziata Church, which was built in 1823, commissioned by Cardinal Cesare Brancadoro. The Teatro delle Api was built recently, in 2006. Its program features an outstanding international Children Theatre Festival named “I Teatri del Mondo” (held in July).Sant’Elpidio is famous not only for its impressive architecture, but also for its stunning 7-km long seafront promenade, which offers a cycling lane, a jogging path, a playground and various sport grounds, as well as platforms overlooking the sea, where concerts are hosted in the summer season. The sea also has a leading role in the city’s cuisine, which features many tasty fish dishes – above all brodetto (a fish stew). Delicious local specialties also include wine (Falerio and Rosso Piceno) and olive oil (piantone di Falerone). The town and its surroundings are also widely known for women’s footwear manufacture.

It is the “queen town of tourism” in the Marches region, one of the major coastal cities of the Adriatic Sea, belonging to the “Riviera delle Palme”: that is San Benedetto del Tronto, a tourist attraction par excellence. Indeed, the city owes its world renown to its clear sea and its majestic 30-m wide promenade, but we should not – however – forget about the many mountains (Monte Vettore, Gran Sasso d’Italia, the Maiella massif) which surround and “protect” it, marking the city’s landscape. Founded in Roman Age, contended over time between Ascoli and Fermo, ravaged and devastated through the ages, San Benedetto started to thrive in the second half of the 19th century. The decisive turn came when the Adriatic railway was built, anticipating the creation of the first beach resorts, dating back to the late 19th century.Since then, San Benedetto del Tronto (the city’s complete name, set forth by Royal Decree in 1896) has been thriving around the sea, which is its source of economic and cultural wealth. The recently opened Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche (Marine Tradition Museum of the Marches Region, www.comunesbt.it), together with the Museo delle Anfore (Amphorae Museum) and the Ittico Capriotti (Capriotti Fish Museum), completes the “Polo Museale del Mare” (Sea Museums), located in the port area.Fish and seafood dishes – such as brodetto (a popular fish stew with bell peppers and vinegar) – are obviously a must taste in local cuisine, paired with local wines (Falerio dei Colli, Offida and Rosso Piceno, in its “Superiore” variety, which is a real treat over red meat). San Benedetto del Tronto has always been the finish city of the Tirreno-Adriatico since its second edition, held in 1967.
