Crossings Holiday Art Fair offersinviting indoor festival atmosphere

ZUMBROTA Crossings welcomes special guest artists to thegallery and gift shop for the 19th Annual Holiday Art Fair November22-24. Fourteen special guest artists are participating in two locationsduring this three-day event. Many clay studio members will have theirwork on display and for sale.

    Open hours for the 2013 Fair are Friday, November 22, noon to 7p.m. (wine tasting starts at 5 p.m.) ; Sat., Nov. 23, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.;and Sunday, November 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Many guest artists are taking part in the Fair for the first time; mostwill be on-hand to talk about their original creations with patrons.

Crossings has recently expanded by adding space in an existingstore along Zumbrotas Main Street. Crossings on Main is inside

Flower on Main, and at least three Holiday Art Fair artists will be atthat location over the same hours as the main store.

Refreshments such as hot cider and sweet treats will be servedthroughout the Art Fair. Browsers will enjoy the warm, welcomingand unhurried atmosphere in both locations!

Special guest artists include:Kelli Brevick creates dolls and pins with fiber art. I enjoy all the

textures and little things that happen when you put textiles together. Iuse vintage items such as trim, buttons, paper and beads in my jewelryand dolls, she said.

Sheryl Ness (Lillybella Designs) creates jewelry with stones andmetals. The beautiful colors of the sunset, water flowing over rocks, sunflowers, honey, the moon shining in the night sky, inspire her, shesaid. Some of my favorite stones to work with are labradorite, tour-maline, natural opals, moonstone, citrine, iolite, jasper, abalone shellsand freshwater pearls.

Amy Brooks (Bubbles by Brooks) makeshandcrafted cold-processsoaps, head-to-toe shampoo bars, solid lotions, lip balms, soy candles, bath gels, and gift sets thatinclude ingredients like blueberries andgoat milk, lemon poppy seed, sandalwood and avocado. Shell be atCrossings with her full line. All are totally free from artificial preser-vatives, PEGs, Parabens and coloring. Brooks resides in Rochester.

Geralyn Thelan creates fused glass art that can be functional ordecorative. For some reason my stories do not come out in words: butwhen I work in glass ... my heart sings to me, she said. Thelan createstwo-dimensional pieces, sculptures and installations.

Brenna Busse creates mixed media figures from found objects, natural materials and fiber notions. Wandering and day dreaming areessential parts of my creative process.

My wandering eye notices materials and the odd juxtaposition ofimages that surround my city life and I imagine how all of that couldbe incorporated into the body of one of my mixed media figures.

Amy Palmer and Matt Palmer (Full Circle Studios) began collabo-rating three years ago, when she had been creating jewelry for 17years and he had worked in a variety of media. The creation of uniqueand fanciful jewelry is the result of our compulsion for salvaging oldobjects and materials and our shared passion for design and sculp-ture, they said.

Shona Brooks (Eclectic Goat) has created posters and books filledwith her doodle art, including two books produced by national childrenstoy company Mindware. She uses her doodles in resin jewelry, aswell. Her business partner at Eclectic Goat, Suzanne Klumb, also willparticipate in the Fair.

Other artists are: Chris Allen Wickler, creating unique clothingwith Shibori and discharge printing methods; Connie Beckers, TheGoddess of Glass, with fused and stained glass creations; Elsa JoEllison with needlefelted figures, Kristen Treuting with lovely andlively painted gourds; Sharon Kilanowski, who creates tree of lifependants with stones and metal wire; and Susan Panciera with handcraftedArgentium sterling silver earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.

The November art exhibit also will be on display. It features col-lages that are assembled or digitally manipulated and printed ontocanvas, by Kristi Larsen and Jean Haefele, who will be at CrossingsSat., Nov. 9, at 5:30 p.m. for a public reception.

Art Fair shoppers on Saturday may choose to stay for the PetSounds Beach Boys album concert by Collective Unconscious, theband that sets the bar for tribute concerts in Minnesota. The concert isheld next door at the Zumbrota State Theatre and starts at 7:30 p.m.Tickets are $32 in advance; $35 day of show.

Crossings is located at 320 East Ave. in Zumbrota. Call us at 507-732-7616. Find out more at www.crossingsatcarnegie.com.

tive Unconscious are bringing back their tribute to Pet Sounds bythe Beach Boys. The Central-Minnesota band deliver an album con-cert, faithfully reproducing each Pet Sounds song, to the StateTheatre on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m.

To create that authentic experience, Collective Unconscious willbring along an 18-piece orchestra, plus guest performers. Thereseven a Theremin involved a Russian-invented electronic musicalinstrument played without physical contact. Its used on Good Vi-brations.

While the Beach Boys started out as a lighthearted surfer rock band, their 1966 album, largely composed by Brian Wilson, wasgroundbreaking at the time and now is considered a classic. PetSounds includes songs such as Wouldnt It Be Nice, God OnlyKnows and Sloop John B, and features a complex, intricate andmulti-layered sound. Unconventional instruments, experimentation, and layers of vocal harmonies permeate the music. The album repre-sented a move to a psychedelic sound for the band, and marked theemergence of psychedelic rock as a musical style.

The Beach Boys have had more than 80 songs chart worldwide; 36of them were Top 40 hits in the United State, and four of those reachednumber one on Billboards Hot 100.

Collective Unconscious are a group of musicians who have a his-tory of making incredible music together, whether it be their ownoriginals or covers. Over the past decade, they have stunned audi-ences throughout Minnesota with their productions of The BeatlesAbbey Road, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Youngs Dj vu, andSimon Garfunkels Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Fronted by singer-songwriters Jeff Engholm, Nathan Nesje, andMuggsy Lauer, the band are joined depending on the show byGeorge Maurer on keys and a multitude of talented area musicians, including members of The Half Steps, The Vees, The Fabulous Arma-dillos and many more.

    DNR anticipates gooddeer hunting season

Deer hunting should be good when Minnesotas firearms huntingseason opens Saturday, Nov. 9.

Thats the word from the Minnesota Department of Natural Re-sources (DNR), whose biologists report deer populations are stableacross much of the state.

Minnesotas deer population is largely stable in the southern halfof the state because of mild winters and generally conservative deermanagement, said Leslie McInenly, the DNRs big game programleader. Mild winters result in more survival of adults, more fawnsbeing born, and more deer in the states fields and forests the follow-ing hunting season.

Winter, which is a significant source of mortality in Minnesotadeer, ranged from moderate to severe in northern Minnesota. As aresult, permit area designations across most of northern Minnesotaare either lottery or hunter choice.

Hunters may find farmland conditions more challenging due to thisyears later corn harvest, which results in a substantial amount ofstanding corn.

Last year, Minnesotas nearly 500,000 deer hunters harvested 186,000deer. A similar harvest is expected this year.

McInenly said deer permit management designations that limithunters to one, two or five deer largely are the same as last year. Thelimits reflect the departments interest in rebuilding or maintainingthe deer herd in certain portions of the state by managing the harvest.

Based on 2013 population estimates, almost 80 percent of permitareas are at population goal. Antlerless and bonus deer permit avail-ability decreases as overly abundant populations are brought into linewith department goals.

Minnesotas deer harvest has varied widely over the past half cen-tury. In a historical context, too many deer were taken during the1960s, forcing the closure of the deer season in 1971 and a rebuildingof the deer herd from the 1970s through the 1990s. The highest deer

harvest occurred in 2003, when 290,000 deer were taken as part of aneffort to reduce the deer herd. Today, the DNR manages the deerpopulation based on goals established with public input.

As the states deer population has been reduced to meet goals, more consistent and moderate harvests are anticipated, McInenlysaid. That said, population goals in some places were establishednearly 10 years ago and the DNR is initiating a public process torevisit goals for permit areas statewide during the next few years.

The DNR will be working with hunters and other stakeholders thiswinter to evaluate deer population goals for southeastern Minnesota.

The firearms deer season concludes Sunday, Nov. 24, in Series 100permit areas, which cover much of northeastern Minnesota. In Series300 permit areas, which cover the southeastern corner of the state, thefirst season ends Sunday, Nov.17, but a late season opens Saturday,Nov. 23, and concludes Sunday, Dec. 1. Firearms season ends Sun-day, Nov. 17, in Series 200 permit areas, which cover the remainder ofthe state.

Harvested deer can be donatedfor distribution to food shelves

Deer donated to food shelves can be processed at no cost to huntersthanks to a program coordinated by the Minnesota departments ofnatural resources and agriculture. Prior to 2007, hunters could donatedeer to food shelves but had to pay processing costs.

The venison donation program has multiple benefits, said LeslieMcInenly, big game program leader for the Minnesota Department ofNatural Resources (DNR). In portions of the state, hunters are en-couraged to harvest multiple deer, the program provides hunters anavenue to donate the extra deer they harvest without having to payprocessing costs. Demand for food assistance also has been increas-ing in recent years across Minnesota, and this is a great opportunity toprovide locally-sourced meat to families in need.

More details on the venison donation program, as well as a list ofparticipating meat processors, are available online at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/deer/donation. Processors who accept deer are paid $70 toprocess each animal for food shelf distribution.

Funding for the program comes from surcharges placed on antlerlesspermits and non-resident hunting licenses.

To donate a deer, hunters will need to adhere to the followingguidelines:

Only whole carcasses with the hide on can be donated because

processors will not accept cut and wrapped meat or portions of car-casses. Information such as permit area of harvest and the DNR number

will be collected for tracking purposes. Processors can only accept carcasses for donation that are free

from signs of illness, free of visible decomposition or contaminationand properly identified with a Minnesota DNR registration tag.

Processors will reject deer for the donation program that appear tohave been mishandled in any way.

Hunters are strongly advised to contact the processor prior to donat-ing the deer. A list of processors who accept deer for the program isavailable online at http://go.usa.gov/WDk3.
