BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION

    Third Quarter Distribution Report 4

    Youth Career Planning Workshop 2

YKIP Newsletter Vol. I February 2015

  • YKIP NEWSLETTER| VOL.I FEBRUARY 2015 2

For anyone, making a life changing decision is a daunting task, much less a teenager on the cusp of their graduation. Faced with the choice between continuing their studies and joining the work force to become the family’s breadwinner, the KIDS and KEMBALI students have a lot to consider.

Understanding the importance of the choices made at this point in life, YKIP held a two-day Career Planning Workshop aimed at 11th and 12th graders, sponsored by the foundation. This was held from 13 to 14 December 2014 at Balai Budaya Gianyar and by the end of this annual workshop, the students were expected to leave the workshop ready to make informed decisions on what is best for their future.

“The Career Planning Workshop for YKIP’s 11th and 12th grade students stimulated critical thinking in order to

help them create the life they want to live, through self-development and by utilizing their experiences to achieve their dream,” said Dian Assiddika, YKIP’s Operations Director. “They have to understand that career planning is a dynamic process. As the students continue to grow and experience different facets of life, they will evaluate and adjust their career plans accordingly in response to both external factors, such as changing workplace or life circumstances, as well as internal factors such as shifting interests. The workshop helped them organize that so they get the best possible outcome to accommodate their situation.”

To guide the children in making their choices, YKIP enlisted the help of seven speakers from various organizations to share some tips on how to manage their options after graduation and consider what the advantages and disadvantages were for the choices they have to make. The speakers were volunteers from Balai Latihan Kerja Provinsi Bali, Campuhan

    College, Mitrais and Surfer Girl.

More than 160 students attended the workshop. They learned the importance of following one’s dream, as it shapes one’s life goals, for essential livelihood improvements. They became aware of networking and how allies can be found, in order to support them personally or professionally, all they have to do is look carefully and reach out. They were also taught to be flexible and to adjust their goals according to situational change, as only change is constant and we have to adapt to succeed.

…means being an ally, helping our future KEMBALI and KIDS graduates realize their ideas and goals as well as making decisions.

As a career coach we applied the High Five messages as we explored career and life paths with our students. We delivered the messages to the students through several role models whom we asked to be our speakers during the workshop sessions.

    Those messages were:

Change is Constant. Both in work and in life, change is a constant force but change can also create opportunities. Today, security will come from one’s ability to anticipate change, make changes, manage change, and be resilient.

Learning is Continuous. Learning is a lifelong process. Learning skills development and work are inseparable processes that YKIP future graduates will engage in as they build up their career and gain more experience. We also underlined the fact that learning is in fact everywhere.

Focus on the Journey. We encouraged our students to be open to changing their mind because life is a journey of experiences; destinations are just stopping points along the way. Career building not only requires attention to goals but also to all that occurs on the journey toward these goals.

Follow Your Heart. People are happiest and do their best when they are passionate and doing what they love. Pursuing dreams provides motivation and direction and helps to clarify what’s really important to people. Therefore, we encourage our teen students to dare to dream and let those dreams shape their goals. They can feel the energy, can make use of it to master the skills, and can take necessary risks to make their dreams, or any part of them, a reality.

Lean on Your Allies and Be an Ally Yourself. We stressed to our teen students the importance of finding allies because nobody can do everything alone. Allies come in many different forms, such as family, neighbors, coaches, teachers, or friends. They can also find helpful people at local employment and career centers in their community. We reminded them as well, while it is important for them to build networks of allies, it is important for them to be part of the network for others too.

On January 15, 2015, we started the distribution of school supplies and cash allowances for the third quarter period of the 2014/2015 academic year. We distributed the educational assistance to 508 students across thirteen areas of our program coverage and completed it on February 12, 2015.

During this quarterly event, we required all students to bring their academic report, which they received in December 2014. We expected nothing less than good grades and smiles from ear to ear from the students when they showed their six months study results. Most of them came out with the expected outcome; some even showed outstanding results. Only a small number of students required more of our attention due to their lower than expected minimum standard first semester grades. Yet they still have a chance to make it up in the second semester before heading into the final test.

People who work with YKIP, as well as other organizations which support the education for disadvantaged children, understand that many of these children living in low-income households miss

out on opportunities (both educational and social) because their parents are unable to provide the positive environment for their children to learn. Most of the time, this is because their parents are unable to meet the costs or because they lack educational awareness. Furthermore, students growing up in low-income households often require remedial help or special educational needs assistance compared to their better-off peers. While not true of all disadvantaged families, trends show students’ aspirations for educational achievement appear to be influenced by poverty.

In order to minimize the numbers of student dropouts; YKIP has given their best efforts to keep the KEMBALI students in school. Educating the parents or caregivers on the importance of education is always a necessity every time the team conducts the program monitoring or quarterly distribution.

We believe in the power of “What IF.”

The Inspirasia Foundation, established as the Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was formed as a positive response to the tragic 2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a memorial to the spirit of the more than 200 innocent victims of that bomb, among them young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia Foundation supports 13 partners across Asia, including in Bali.

2015 sees Mitrais entering its 13th year of involvement in supporting YKIP activities. Mitrais’ involvement started in 2002 when Mitrais’ staff were involved in the Bali Bombings relief action, their support has continued through today and includes the provision of office space, accounting, IT, and internet support, as well as other volunteer services. Senior Mitrais employees are on the YKIP management board, cementing an already close bond between the two organizations.
