KEMBALI Second & Third

Quarter Distribution

It feels like only yesterday we had our first quarter distribution for the Academic Year of 2013/2014, and now the third quarter distribution has already been completed!

During the second quarter distribution in October last year, YKIP highlighted the distribution days by giving appreciation to 49 KEMBALI Best Students of 2012. These students received the best achievement prizes based on their academic/non-academic performance in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. For more details about these Best Students of 2012, their names and photos can be seen on YKIP website.

In January this year, YKIP held the KEMBALI third quarter distribution event that covered 12 districts across 4 regencies in Bali. It took place from the 12

th to 24

th January. During

the event, additional support to cover for schooling necessities was also distributed to the sponsored students. They received a package of school supplies and allowances to

cover other school related expenses such as transport, workbooks and extracurricular activities. Especially for the elementary students, there was a de-worming activity to keep their digestive system healthy.

Many Hands Make Light Work

It was a pleasant experience for YKIP staffs to have so many helpful hands during the distribution. The event involved all of YKIP’s staff during the workdays and a total of 28 volunteers, 20 of which were from Mitrais, that volunteered on the weekends.

One of YKIP’s regular volunteers expressed his delight about how the YKIP staffs and volunteers collaborated very well in handling the tasks together, which in turn minimized the time required for distribution.

“After several times volunteering for YKIP, I have noticed that this organization has become more powerful than ever. For instance, when I first volunteered for YKIP, I noticed that the distribution on field could be so much time consuming. YKIP used to distribute donation by order, starting from elementary school, continuing with junior-high school, then high school students. Right now, they are able to utilize a large group of volunteers in one distribution, and the process is much faster than it used to be. They no longer distribute donations by order, but in groups: a group for distributing to elementary and junior high school and another group for distributing to high school students. It is more effective and much more fun! I am grateful that YKIP has been improving themselves in the last 2 years,” said Risdian Ciptayadi.

Some of the volunteers, with their limited grasp of Balinese language, also tried their best to connect with the families of the children we sponsored who cannot speak fluent Indonesian. While there was a lot of fumbling involved on both sides, they managed to understand each other enough to have fun during the event.

Everyone was undoubtedly tired by the end of the event, but none can claim that they did

not have fun making this event a resounding success for everyone involved.

Thank you for all Mitrais staffs: Gama Ogi Prayogo, Pitri Yosi Leowardi, Hesty Noviana, Choirul Anas, Havit Choirul Rovik, Roy Saputra, Abidah Elchoiqi, Christine Abigael Sondakh, Kadek Ayu Kartiniasih, Filya Mustikawati, Risdian Ciptayadi, Novi Kumalasari, Ni Luh Putu Adi Swadani, Kholishul Aziz, Muhamad Ridwan, Albertus Adityo Wahono, Marsel Willem Aipassa, Damar Bramantyo, Luh Putu Ekaputri Angga Dewi, Christine Novanti Bayu, who have contributed their time on weekends and also to University and Vocational sponsored

students: Ni Kadek Darmani, Ni Made Tiya

Jumani Monica, I Ketut Kertayana, I Made Badra, I Kadek Saputra, Ni Komang Triantari, Ni Komang Aryawati, Ni Luh Ayu Sekar, as well as individual volunteer, Nita Wiyesti, who have lent their helpful hands to YKIP.

UPCOMING EVENT

KEMBALI 4th Quarter Distribution is scheduled to commence the 4th week of April 2014.

A Poem for Remembrance I am free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following paths God made for me I took his hand I heard him call Then turned, and bid farewell to all I could not stay another day… To laugh, to love, to sing, to play Tasks left undone must stay that way… I found my peace... at close of play And if my parting left a void… Then fill it with remembered joy A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss… Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened... deep with sorrow… I wish you sunshine of tomorrow My life's been full I've savored much… Good friends, good times A loved one's touch Perhaps my time seemed all too brief… Don't lengthen it now with grief Lift up your hearts and share with me, God wants me now... He set me free. ~Anonymous~ We dedicate this very touching poem to Ni Made Ratna Nopiari. Sadly we lost one of our sponsored students, Ni Made Ratna Nopiari, who passed away on Saturday, 11

th January 2014, only a day before we started our Third Quarter

Distribution. She passed away after being involved in a motorcycle accident near her house. Nopiari had become one of KEMBALI’s sponsored students since 2008. She was a great student and lovely person and we will always have fond memories of her.

STAFF EXCHANGE

Dewanto Adi Agung

KEMBALI Field Officer - NEW

Agung was born in 1994 in Denpasar, and was one of the KEMBALI Program’s sponsored students from 2008 until 2012. He graduated from senior high school in 2012, then Agung continued his study in Campuhan College, Ubud, majoring in Visual Communication Design. In 2013 he graduated from the one year professional program and received another scholarship to study communication at Universitas Pendidikan Nasional, Denpasar. In January 2014, Agung joined YKIP as a Field Officer for the KEMBALI Program. Although this is a new experience for him joining the YKIP workforce, Agung has plenty of experience to draw from as he had previously volunteered at numerous YKIP events and programs over the last year and a half. All through his life, Agung found that there are a lot of disadvantaged people that needs help and support; thus, he decided to do something by joining YKIP.

Welcome aboard, Agung!

I Nyoman Tri Purnamayana P.

… or Tri for short, has been with YKIP for 15 months as a KEMBALI Field Officer. Unfortunately for us, he has decided to leave us to pursue his dream of becoming a successful Balinese young entrepreneur. Tri still kindly supports us as one of our volunteers. So, instead of goodbye for Tri, we choose to say "see you later" and wish you good luck for your future endeavors.

Help us break the cycle of poverty by sponsoring a child through the KEMBALI Scholarship Program. Child sponsorship is a life changing experience; you will not only touch the life of the child you are sponsoring, but you will also see that their success changes the lives of their family and community.

Youth Career Planning

Workshop 2013

One of many ways YKIP goes about striving for its goal to ‘break the cycle of poverty through education’ is by providing a youth career planning workshop for high school students.

Most of the children sponsored by YKIP have a narrow opportunity to continue their education to a higher level due to limited scholarships available. Among the participants of our workshop, there are those who would prefer to start working and bring an income to their family rather than continue with their study. Some are still hovering with indecision at this crossroad in their life, not knowing which path is best for them to take just yet. Therefore, building self-determination skills, such as goal setting, decision-making, self-advocacy, and problem solving is included in our career planning workshops. Youth with disadvantaged family background will tend to have a resiliency not always experienced by their same aged peers – and not always easily seen or understood by themselves or by adults, which actually if not understood by the young people will contribute to growing lack of self-esteem.

YKIP held the two day “Youth Career Planning Workshop 2013” for 152 KEMBALI and KIDS Scholarship students from 11th and 12th grades. During this workshop, held on the 12

th and 13

th December, YKIP encouraged

these young people to explore how

the obstacles they may face in life can pose an opportunity for developing and demonstrating maturity, responsibility, and wisdom and the workshop itself aimed to help them make up their minds. Prior to the event, there was a survey of the students’ academic fields of interest, potential employment, and scholarship opportunities after graduating high school. During the workshop a series of activities were conducted, including a talk show, discussion, and games, with the purpose of expanding the students’ knowledge of profession choice and also the soft skills required to gain employment, like preparing an application letter and preparation for a job interview.

This event was held successfully with lots of support from helpful volunteers and YKIP’s generous sponsors. Our huge thanks to: • District Government of Gianyar • Inspirasia Foundation • Mitrais • Uma Ubud • MasterCard Purchase with Purpose • Surfer Girl • PT. Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk.

More photos of this event can be seen on our Facebook album

Heeding the Call: the Road to Audiologist

YKIP educational support to Christy began when she was still attending Grade 11 of her Senior High School in 2008 through KEMBALI Scholarship Program. When she graduated from Senior High School, she was offered the opportunity to continue her study in Audiology at Akademi Audiologi Indonesia (AAI), Jakarta in 2010.

Christy’s three years journey was not easy at all, “My entire family and my friends have been so encouraging and have really helped me strive towards earning my degree. They continued to believe in me even when I continued to doubt in myself. God has also given me strength and provided opportunities for me when I thought there were none,” said Christy.

At the end, her hard work paid off. After Christy completed her study with a final paper thesis on “Impact of Cytomegalovirus Infection on the Hearing Development and Its Management”, on January 27, 2014, Christy Adi Mukti received Associate Expert in Audiology as her degree and graduated with GPA 3.2.

“Now after graduating, I have decided to work with Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan (YPK), a non-for-profit organization which aims to assist people with a disability by providing services to the poor including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, informal education, mobile therapy clinic, hearing assessment and aids, daily living skills, and opportunities for clients to have social interaction. I am so excited and happy that I am now able to help people and practice my knowledge and skills for those who are in need, especially people in Bali, in my hometown,” said Christy again.

Congratulation, Christy! Wishing you a very bright future as an Audiologist.

Tribute for My Beloved Father, a Gift for My Family

“I was in 6th grade when my father died in the 2002 Bali bombings. Since then, my education was supported by the KIDS Scholarship Program until I finished my study at STIMIK STIKOM Bali, Denpasar on November 30, 2013 with Associate Expert Degree in Computer Technology,” said Limna or whom her full name now bears the title, Ni Wayan Limna Rarasanti, A.Md.Kom; one of the children who lost a parent or who had permanently injured parent during the Bali bombing 2002.

Limna took three years study IT Management and graduated with GPA 3.03.

“Nothing can make me feel as happy as to see how proudly my mother stood next to me on my graduation day. I am the first child in my family and I am now able to give full support to people that I love,” Limna proudly said.

Limna has two younger brothers whose education is also supported by the KIDS Scholarship Program. YKIP hopes that by having Limna succeed in completing her education, her two brothers will follow her path of success and bring a bright future to their family’s quality of life.

Fischer Family and Friends visited

Seraya Barat on Sunday, 20 October 2013. It was our Q2 Distribution day in Karangasem and the Fischer Family decided to join us along with their friends. They came all the way from Switzerland to Bali with giant suitcases full of donations for the children of Seraya Barat.

It was a hot day, but the weather did not affect us as we watched in awe the Seraya Barat students’ performance of

beautiful Balinese dances, presented to the Fischer Family and Friends. This Seraya Dance group had practiced their dances for a

year, and that day, they proudly showed us the result of their hard work.

More than 100 students, accompanied by their parents, were present there, and they

were really excited when the Fischer family gave sets of sports equipments as their presents to the children of the local community in Seraya Barat. We observed that the children just couldn’t wait to play with their new soccer balls, volley balls,

rounders, and all the other sport equipment donated by the Fischer Family.

Prior to the Fischer Family and Friends leaving (we thought Eva, Jonas, and Tom would love to stay there the whole day), Tom gave us his favorite (huge) Teddy Bear to be donated to one of the students. Knowing how much the Teddy Bear meant to him, it was such an honor for us to

donate it on behalf of Tom. Thank you, Tom! Our huge thanks to the Fischers and their Friends!

Jessica and Kenny joined our Second

Quarter Distribution in Gianyar on October 8, 2013. It was interesting to see our students’ shy faces when they arrived in one of our posts, where Jessica and Kenny were distributing vitamins and warm smiles to them.

KEMBALI students in Gianyar were also excited when Jessica and Kenny shared a little about their hometown in Australia. Later on Jessica and Kenny helped us to hand out the prizes to the students who were awarded for the best academic and non-academic achievement this year. Although they were a bit shy to talk with Jessica and Kenny, at the end of the distribution some students asked Jessica and Kenny if they were willing to take photos with them.

After the distribution, we had the opportunity to visit Jessica’s sponsored student: Adenia.

We visited Adenia’s house and had a nice time with Adenia’s family, while Jessica and Adenia had the chance to talk and share their feelings towards each other. It was quite surprising when Adenia, who is really shy, excitedly asked few questions about Jessica’s

cousin who is the same age as Adenia. Jessica had previously written to Adenia about her cousin and Adenia must have been waiting for the opportunity to find out more from Jessica in person.

Before we left Adenia’s house, Jessica gave Adenia presents

that she and Kenny had brought from Australia. It was a really joyful moment to see

Adenia’s face when she got a Koala and a Kangaroo doll and goodies from Jessica. Although it was just a short visit, we really had a good time together at Adenia’s house. We all can’t wait for Jessica and Kenny’s next visit!

Jody and Julian came to visit their two

sponsored students: Widhi and Sugiani. Accompanied by our team from YKIP, Jodie and Julian first went to Widhi’s house in Sanur. We were warmly welcomed by Widhi’s whole family; Widhi, his parents, his older brother, and his grandma. They were really surprised when they found out Jodie and Julian had gifts for them and sports equipment for Widhi. Although Widhi was really shy, we could see how excited he was to meet Jodie and Julian for the first time.

We then continued our journey to Sugiani’s home in Taro. Although the journey was long and rough, we could still see how excited Jodie and Julian were to see Sugiani.

When we finally arrived there, Sugiani and her younger sister and younger brother weren’t able to hide their excitement to see Jodie and Julian

for the first time. They were really happy when Jodie and Julian gave surprise gifts for Sugiani and household supplies for the whole family.

Given the opportunity, Sugiani and her family shared their stories about their daily activities with Jodie and Julian. Jodie and Julian were then really moved when Sugiani finally was able to gather all her braveness and thanked them for their gifts and supports, then she started to cry.

Thank you, Jodie and Julian. It was such an honor for us to accompany both of you. Looking forward to having another fun journey with you next time!

Yogi and Ida visit Ida’s hometown in Bali

annually. Last December, they scheduled a special journey to visit their sponsored students in Karangasem: Riris and Andrika. Their visit to Riris and Andrika’s home was full of laughter and joy.

Riris and Andrika’s family were so happy to meet Ida and Yogi for the first time, especially when they gave surprise gifts to both Riris and Andrika, comic books. Ida and Yogi had specially

dedicated their time to find these educational and fun-to-be-read comic books for Riris and Andrika. Ida then spent time with Riris and Andrika reading the books together.

Thank you, Ida and Yogi. We had a great time with you in Karangasem, till we meet again in Bali!

GIN Youth Conference 2013 Story from the Field by Putu Elisza Cahaya (KEMBALI Student – 12th Grade)

On Saturday and Sunday, October 5

th and

6th

, I participated in an international youth conference: Global Initiatives Network Youth Conference 2013, an opportunity given by Bali International School to KEMBALI sponsored students. This conference was held at the Canggu Community School, an

international school located in Canggu.

There were three sponsored students from YKIP who received this opportunity to participate in this conference: myself, Pande Muliati, and Kadek Namiani, while most of the other participants were students from international schools in Bali such as Green School, Bali International School, and the Canggu Community School. There were lots of program at this conference, but we were only able to participate in one program, Health and Healthy Living. During the conference, we were accompanied by Ibu Dian from YKIP.

On the first day of the conference, we first registered and then joined the opening ceremony of the Conference at the Canggu Community School. The opening ceremony started with a music performance, performed by students from the Canggu Community School. After the show, we were introduced to the speakers of each program at the event. When the opening ceremony finished, all of the students gathered for each program, and we all departed to the various program locations.

The Health and Healthy Living program was held at an orphanage named Jodie O’shea Orphanage. We went there in a bus and

the place was about 1 hour journey from the Canggu Community School. Our facilitators for this event were Ms. Claire and an illusionist name Scott Hammel. When Scott was with us, he showed us a lot of magic tricks, and the magic tricks were really amazing so all the students were impressed by his performance.

When we arrived at the orphanage, the children of the orphanage

welcomed all of us. We were gathered in the art room to listen to a presentation delivered by Cody Ferguson, the owner of a vegetarian restaurant (Down to Earth Café) about food and its impact to our feelings and moods. From the presentation, now I know that there are foods that can make us happy, sad, upset, and so on.

After the presentation, we were invited to the orphanage’s kitchen to make healthy food. We learnt how to make healthy sushi and chocolate. I met a lot of new friends in this program, though it was quite difficult for us to communicate in English with the other students.

After this cooking class, we gathered in the art room again to listen to a presentation from an organization name Ayo Berbicara Tentang HIV/AIDS. We learnt about the symptoms, transmission, and how to treat people with HIV/AIDS.

I found out that this organization had delivered the same presentation at my school before.

On the next day we gathered at the school hall and listened to presentations delivered by famous speakers from around the world like Robi Navicula, Fa’ Empel, Rob Dyer, and so on. I was really impressed by one of the speakers, Rob Skater from Canada, who was really concerned about cancer. Luckily I was able take picture with

him at the end of the

event.

I am really happy that I was able to participate in this conference. I got the opportunity to experience a lot of new things, met new friends from international

schools, and also got the opportunity to practice my English.

SPECIAL THANKS ALSO TO

The Singapore Rugby Players’ Bali Victims Relief Charity have been fundraising for YKIP for some time and have just sent us another generous donation, this time for US$24,477.69 in October 2013 to support our KEMBALI Scholarship Program.

From previous fundraising activities, the charity funds were used to help with education expenses for the children of the bomb victims. Their generous donations have enabled YKIP to support 61 KIDS children's education until the youngest child complete college in 2026! This means that a great burden has been lifted off their parents as they were worried that the youngest children would not be able to go to college.

The Singapore Cricket Club was established in 1852 and prides itself as one of the premier sports and social clubs in the region. The Club’s rugby team was playing in the Bali 10s rugby tournament in October 2002 and lost eight players in the bombings in Kuta on October 12th. Various rugby players connected with the Club came together to establish The Singapore Rugby Players’ Bali Victims Relief Charity. YKIP is extremely grateful for their very generous donation.

Uma by COMO, Ubud in partnership with MasterCard Purchase with Purpose™, have helped us fundraise for the YKIP career skills workshop program which we hold every December for 11

th and

12th

Grade students from the KEMBALI and KIDS Scholarship Programs. Since 2010, COMO Hotels and Resorts have partnered with MasterCard in the Purchase with Purpose™ programme and starting 2013, from October to December, guests staying at all COMO Hotels and Resorts are able to support YKIP by simply using their MasterCard. Each MasterCard transaction earns a US$25 donation to one of COMO’s location-specific community partners. Find out more about MasterCard Purchase with Purpose™ programme.

Uma by COMO, Ubud is a luxury central Bali hotel located in Kedewatan, a 30-minute walk from the Ubud centre.

YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Inspirasia Foundation and PT. Mitrais

have given so we are able to deliver educational assistance to disadvantaged children.

The Inspirasia Foundation is a philanthropy

portfolio making investments in health &

education projects with high potential for

growth helping some of the most

marginalized social groups in India,

Indonesia, and Thailand, including the

disabled, poor young women, and

unschooled children. We believe in the power

of “What IF.”

The Inspirasia Foundation, established as the

Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was

formed as a positive response to the tragic

2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a

memorial to the spirit of the more than 200

innocent victims of that bomb, among them

a young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia

Foundation supports 16 partners across Asia,

including in Bali.

2013 sees Mitrais entering its 11th year of
