Rejoice and Be Glad; Your Reward Will Be Great in Heaven—What is
it that we live for? What are the motivations of our thoughts, our
words, our actions, our entire lives? Is it something in this
life—accomplishment, knowledge, wealth, power, prestige? Or is
it something else, like heaven and our eternal reward? As
Christians, there are countless references in Sacred Scripture and
in the teachings from every generation of the Church that remind us
that we were not made for this world. For instance, in the First
Book of Chronicles, King David prays, “For before you we are
strangers and travelers, like all our ancestors. Our days on earth
are like a shadow, without a future.” ( Chr 29:15) That means that
we are made for something more, the greatest thing, life for ever
with God in heaven. However, it does not mean that we can just sit
back and enjoy the ride here, as if heaven is a given. Rather, as
Jesus reminds us in the Beatitudes in today’s Gospel, we must put
ourselves and our wants aside and instead live for God and others.
On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to provide for the good of
the Church, so that, in building up the Kingdom of God here on
earth, we can be welcomed home to God’s Kingdom in heaven. Visit

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear Luke’s account of Jesus’ Sermon
on the Plain which is the counterpart to Matthew’s Sermon on the
Mount. Unlike Matthew’s version, which contained eight Beatitudes,
or blessings, Luke’s account contains four blessings and four woes.
Jesus considered those who are poor, hungry, weeping, or hated to
be blessed. On the other hand, Jesus stated “woe to you” if you are
rich, sated, laughing, or well-liked by others. These statements
were as disheartening for His followers to hear two thousand years
ago as they are for listeners today. What is Jesus saying? What is
He asking of us? Are we supposed to strive to be poor, hungry, sad,
and hated?
In ancient times, poverty was the result of greedy, powerful
people who gained their wealth at the expense of others who were
weak and powerless. The poor were not in their state because of
laziness, bad luck, or poor economic conditions; rather, their
poverty was the result of dishonesty, oppression, and greed. These
conditions will be reversed in the Kingdom of God. Jesus teaches
that those who have more than they need (the rich) will share with
those who do not have enough (the poor). Too often, the people who
are wealthy; who have enough to eat; who are without serious
problems and issues; or who enjoy a celebrity status, find that
there is no need for God in their lives. Sadly, their possessions,
popularity, and comfort become the center of their shallow lives.
On the other hand, the people who are economically poor, living
without enough food or shelter; those who are living a troubled
life; or those who have been rejected by society, turn to God
because they recognize their total dependence on God.
In today’s passage, Jesus beckons all listeners to reflect on
whom or what is the center of our lives. Who, or what, do we value?
Is our focus on the material aspects of this world? Or, is our
focus on love of God and love of others? If God, and the mission
Jesus entrusted to us, is at the center of our lives, then we are
doing His will here on earth and we are blessed. If, however, our
priority is gaining fame, fortune, and power, then we are not
living out our baptismal call and woe to us. Once we espouse Gospel
values instead of the materialistic values of this world, then we
may work together to bring a glimpse of the Kingdom into this
world. Thus our prayer:
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven…”
Spend some time this week reflecting on your life. How can you
help make the Kingdom of God present to those around you?
