  • FOREWORD

THE light operetta music of Victor Herbert, George Gershwin,Vincent Youmans, and others is truly America.n. Its liltingmelody, piquant harmony, and sparkling rhythm have an irre-sistible appeal to the American public. The young generationof American piano students should be as well acquainted withits musical heritage as it is taught to be with the classics.

The purpose of these arrangements and adaptations isa sincere endeavor to make l i t t l e piano classics of melodieswhich are imperishable. They have been given a pianistictreatment that brings out the beauty of the music and therichness of the piano with a minimum of technical effort. Theyhave been carefully fingered and phrased, and occasionaltechnical suggestions and pedal hints have been added.Accordingly they will serve the double purpose of sustainingthe young and adult pianist 's interest and developing histechnical powers. Teachers may therefore well dispense withthe warning that the playing of "popular" music is net goodfor one's technic.

, These adaptations are dedicated to all young and adultpianists of America with the purpose of letting them share inthe pleasure which the music of Herbert, Gershwin, and othershas given to millions of Americans.

In projecting this special series of piano works, we arenot unmindful of the teaching problems involved in eachindividual publication. For both teacher and student, we arelisting therefore the technical considerations of this particularwork.
