You are the light of the world. Let Jesus shine through you to others. 27 July 2016 Term 3 No. 1 Dear Parents, Friends & Students of the St Denis School community Welcome to the chilly mornings of Term 3. Cake Stall Congratulation to the P& F cake stall team of Clare Carney, Justine Richelieu, Maria Pruiti - Rowe and Lucy Hair for their magnificent organisational skills in coordination of the cake stall. Over 80 students and parents baked cakes, slices and supported this initiative, which was a wonderful sign of community spirit. We raised $1890 – what a fantastic result! At last night’s P & F meeting it was agreed that this money will be used to purchase a portable PA system that can be used by all members of the school community. Thank you P & F. Confirmation Our Year 6 students made their commitment to prepare for Confirmation at the parish Mass last Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Please remember to keep these students and their families in your prayers. Carnival Dates Our Annual St Denis Athletics Carnival will be held at HBF Arena in Mt Claremont on Tuesday 9 th August. Buses leave St Denis at 8:45 am and return from the Arena at approximately 1:30pm. Our Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday 14 th September. We are hoping lots of parents can join us on these days to not only cheer on their children but assist with the running of the events. Milo Blast T20 Primary School Cup Students in Years 5 & 6 competed in a T20 cricket carnival earlier in the Year. A boys and girls team have qualified to compete in the Regional Finals on 27 th October at Yokine Reserve. Well done! School Reports This year there were no signatures on the school reports as SEQTA does not have the capacity for an electronic signature. I am pleased to advise that I did read every school report at least once and that I was really thrilled to read of the children’s achievements. Many schools have moved away from paper reports and beyond 2016 this is something the school may consider. Parking continues to be an issue in the morning before school and after school. Parents are reminded that it is a drop off and pick up area with 2 minute parking. Parents who have children in younger years and wish to walk them into school are requested to park on side streets. Electronic School Zone Signs In 2013 the State Government committed to providing Electronic School Zone Signs to all schools in 40km/hr zones in WA. In May this year, we were informed that our school was a priority for the next round of installa- tions. These signs have now been installed on Orchid and Powell Streets and should help to keep our children safe in the vicinity of the school dur- ing peak travel times.

Performing Arts The Senior Choir will be performing on Thursday 18

th August between 9:30 – 10:45am at the Vasto

Club in Balcatta as part of the Annual Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Tennis Lessons We have been approached by a tennis coaching business called Pop Tennis, who are interested in running a before school tennis program at St Denis. This is an overview of the program: Hot Shot tennis lessons for children in Ýears 1-6 which run for 8 weeks in Term 4. The classes run from 7.45-8.30am. They come in and bring all the equipment and control the bookings/admin. In terms of days, depending on numbers they would normally offer 1-2 mornings. Coaches are all insured and carry WWC cards. Any parents who are interested in their child having tennis lessons before school are asked to contact admin so that we can ascertain if there are enough numbers to pursue this. School Visit Sr Ailsa Mackinnon, the Executive Director of Mercy Works – Sisters of Mercy in Australia and Papua New Guinea, will be visiting Perth on Tuesday 16

th August. In this Year of Mercy and given that St

Denis was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, we really look forward to hearing from Sr about the large heartedness of the work that they do. Parents are welcome to come and hear Sr Ailsa speak at 9am in the school hall. God Moments During PMP with Pre Primary: ‘Mrs Hewitson this is how you kick the soccer ball. If you kick like this you hurt your toes. My daddy taught me.’ Louis ‘How come you remember my name?’ Krisha PP Daniel and Judd from Kindy holding hands as they left the school yesterday afternoon. Nathan and Anthony running to school this morning. PP We learn how to pray, just as we do to walk, speak and listen. If you tell me how you pray, I can tell you how you live. Pope Francis We have a school Mass on Friday morning at 9:45 am, which will be led by our Year 5 students. We hope parents and family members can join us. Kind regards Kerry Hewitson Principal

YEAR SIX CONFIRMATION COMMITMENT & FAMILY MASS Thank you to the Year 6 families for attending Mass at St Denis Parish over the weekend. The Confirmation candidates and their parents pledged their commitment to prepare for their sacrament to the best of their ability, with the prayerful support of the parish community. The students did a terrific job reading the Prayer of the Faithful and assisting with the parish collections and offertory. WHOLE SCHOOL MASS On Friday 29 July, the Year 5 class will lead the school community in the celebration of the Eucharist at 9.45am, St Denis Church. Parents are most welcome to attend. YEAR 1 FAMILY PARISH MASS The Year 1 Family Mass is on Sunday, 7 August at 9.00am, St Denis Church. Please make every effort to join us in this celebration, for the continuing growth of faith in your family. ALTAR SERVING TRAINING Altar server training for interested Year 5 students will be held at 3.30-4.30pm on Monday 25 July, 1 August & 8 August. Forms can be dropped off at the parish. Please contact the parish with further enquiries. THE BISHOPS’ LITERACY ASSESSMENT 2016 Students in Years 3, 5 & 9 in Catholic schools in Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment over the next few weeks. The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is developed by the Catholic Education Office. The assessment process involves a series of standardised tests used to diagnose students’ knowledge and understanding of the Religious Education curriculum. Students’ faith is not assessed. The tests reflect and support the Bishops’ Mandate Letter and the K-12 Religious Education curriculum. The tests will be completed online this year. Good luck to our Year 3 & 5 classes. MAKING JESUS REAL AT ST DENIS Kai was our last MJR Award Winner. Congratulations Kai! What was your favourite thing to do with Denis? I liked to watch the Eagles on TV with Denis. How did you feel when you won the award? I felt very surprised and happy. Who do you think should win the MJR award? Miss Pearce. She is very nice and a good teacher who helps us all

the time. Did you go anywhere with Denis? We took Denis shopping to Woolworths and he sat in the trolley. We

also went to Magic Garden. Was Denis naughty with you? He couldn't fit in my bed, he had to stop eating donuts! Hayley is our current MJR Award Winner. Today she answers some questions about winning Denis the Bear and most importantly, the MJR Award. How did winning this award make you feel? Embarrassed because I had to get up in front of everyone, but also very surprised and excited! Why do you think you won this award? I think I got it for trying to be a positive thinker. If you had the chance to give the award to anyone, who would it be? Saffiya in Year 4. She is kind and caring. What has been your favourite activity with Denis so far? Watching the Eagles game with Denis and dressing him up in my scarf. *The next MJR Award will be presented at the Week 5 assembly.* By the Year 6 Communications Committee

History Comes Alive in Year Five!

It has been an exciting start to the term in Year Five! We are beginning to unlock some of the secrets of the Ancient World, with a main emphasis on Ancient Athens and Ancient Greece to tie in with the origin of the Olympic Games. We’ve dabbled in some Greek mythology, life and social structure in Ancient Athens, Greek architecture and its effects on other famous structures, some differences and rivalries between Athens and Sparta, as well as some popular sporting activities in the original games. Did you know…..? “Some Greek theatres could hold over 18,000 spectators. Theatre started to become popular around

700 BC.” – Rebekah “The Olympics are named after Olympia. The first recorded Olympics were held in honour of Zeus, a

pagan god in 776 BC.” – Coco “Ancient Sparta participated in The Trojan War.” – James “Some Greeks wouldn’t eat beans because they thought they were eating the souls of the dead.” –

Estella and Sienna “The Great Plague of Athens in 430 BC killed between 75,000 and 100,000 people.” – Cooper and

Alex “Olympic champions would be crowned with olive branches instead of medals.” – Emily “Only men who spoke Greek could compete in the Ancient Olympic Games.” – Sophia “Slaves made up one-quarter of the work population in Ancient Athens.” – Marianna “The Parthenon was an Ancient Greek temple used for prayer to honour the gods.” – Noah “In Sparta, children entered military schools at age six.” – Tyler “If you had a family member with the plague in Ancient Athens, they would lock that person up inside

the house and leave them.” – Teresa “Zeus killed his father Cronus. They both ruled the heavens but Zeus wanted to rule alone.” – Harry

and Aiden “The plague still exists in some parts of the world.” – Olivia “Ancient Athens was named after the Greek goddess Athena. She is the Greek goddess of Wisdom

and War.” – Jean-Willow “From June to August in Athens, average temperatures reach up to 32 degrees.” – Jesse and

Michael “The Parthenon design has influenced other buildings around the world.” – Bart “In the Ancient Greek theatre, all of the actors were men and women were not allowed to go to the

plays.” – Monica “The first Olympics were over 2700 years ago.” – Jessica ‘’Athletes used to compete in the nude in the Ancient Olympics.” - Larha
