Upstate professor receives $527,551 grant to

Is it possible that day-

dreaming is not such a

waste of time after all?

That while we’re taking a

break from our immediate

surroundings, our brains

are working to process

recent memories without a

conscious effort on our

part?

Thanks to a $527,551

grant from the National

Science Foundation

(NSF), Furman University

Assistant Professor of

Psychology Erin Wamsley

plans to find out.

“While ‘zoning out’ dur-

ing our daily tasks is typi-

cally considered to be a

waste of time, those

moments of being lost in

thought may be essential to

the formation of memory,”

Wamsley said. “That’s

what we hope to discover

with our research.”

Wamsley said that even

when we are sitting still

and doing nothing, the

mind and brain are contin-

uously switching between

two distinct states—an

“online” state where we

are paying attention to our

immediate surroundings,

and an “offline” state

where our attention turns

inward to thoughts of

things like the past and

future.

“We are hypothesizing

that the early stages of

memory processing occur

specifically during

moments of this offline

state, which are inter-

spersed throughout the

day,” Wamsley said. “By

developing new methods

of measuring these waking

states and their function,

we can learn more about

the formation and retention

of long-term memories.”

As a part of NSF’s

Research in Undergraduate

Institutions program,

Wamsley said the research

project will provide

research training for

approximately 12 under-

graduate students over the

course of three years,

including members of

underrepresented minority

groups and students from

underserved public high

schools in South Carolina.

Wamsley joined

Furman’s Department of

Psychology and Program

in Neuroscience at Furman

in 2014. She has received

several grants to fund her

research at the Furman

Sleep Laboratory, where

she and her students study

how the brain processes

memories during sleep as

well as the relationship of

sleep-dependent memory

processing to dream expe-

riences.

She began her academic

career at Guilford College

in North Carolina, where

Wamsley double-majored

in psychology and philoso-

phy. She went on to com-

plete her doctoral studies

at the City University of

New York. After earning

her Ph.D. in 2007,

Wamsley had a postdoctor-

al fellowship in the Divis-

ion of Sleep Medicine at

Harvard Medical School,

where she was later pro-

moted to instructor of psy-

chiatry.

Erin Wamsley (center) said her NSF-funded project will provide

research training for approximately 12 undergraduate students.

How to prep financially when changing jobs(StatePoint) The average

American will hold 11.7

jobs between the ages of 18

and 48, according to The

Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If a job change is on your

horizon, remember that a

new salary and benefits

package bring new finan-

cial considerations.

“Changing jobs brings

with it a myriad of financial

decisions. Take time to

assess your financial situa-

tion and make any neces-

sary adjustments so you can

start the new job focused

and ready,” says Valerie

Radford, a vice president of

Strategic Initiatives at

Prudential Financial.

As you’re making the

switch, Radford says there

are a few things to keep in

mind:

• Don’t Leave Money on

the Table: Keep track of

your 401(k) if you had one

at your previous job. You

can simplify your financial

any orphan plans you’ve

left in the investing uni-

verse. Also, make sure to

take advantage of your new

employer’s 401(k) match

feature, if offered, and con-

tinue momentum by

increasing your contribu-

tion, if possible.

• Don’t Go It Alone:

Consider using a third-party

platform to manage

finances and benefits in one

place that’s designed to

rebalance your goals as cir-

cumstances change. For

example, when you set up

an account with LINK by

Prudential, you’ll be

prompted to answer ques-

tions about what financial

goals are important to you

and, in turn, will be offered

personalized solutions to

help you reach them. LINK

combines the convenience

of a digital experience with

the knowledge of a profes-

sional advisor who can

walk you through this

important transition by

phone, video or in-person.

To learn more, visit pruden-

tial.com/link

• Consider Your Bonus: If

you’re receiving a sign-on

bonus or have an old bonus

saved, determine whether

this money belongs in a

short-term, no-risk account

or whether a longer-term

approach with exposure to

financial markets makes

sense.

• Budgets are Funda-

mental: If you’re making

more money, calculate if

additional funds can be put

into savings. This is a great

place to use a tool like

LINK that allows you to see

all your money in one

place, and can help you

determine where to direct

extra funds. If you’re mak-

ing less money, you might

need to see where to make

cuts.

• Review Your Insurance:

Take a breath before mov-

ing forward with health

coverage decisions. If

you’re married, evaluate

both partner’s plans, not

only for the more afford-

able option, but also for

each plan’s restrictions. For

instance, if one plan allows

you to see doctors without

referrals while the other

doesn’t, you’ll have to

decide whether that’s worth

the extra cost. Finally, take

a look at the amount your

new employer is offering

for life insurance. It’s often

not enough. Consulting a

financial advisor can help

you determine how much

additional insurance to take

out.

Don’t let your financial

goals get lost in the shuffle

of a job transition. A few

strategies and tools can

keep you on track.

Charlotte, N.C. – To kick

off Distracted Driving

Awareness month AAA

Carolinas joined law

enforcement and support-

ers at a press conference at

the NC Department of

Insurance in Raleigh to

urge lawmakers to pass the

Hands Free NC bill. DOI

Commissioner Mike

Causey announced his sup-

port of HB 144, the pro-

posed legislation that

would make it illegal to

use a hand held communi-

cations device, including a

cell phone, while driving.

Families who lost loved

ones from a distracted

driving crash spoke on

behalf of the bill. Rep.

Kevin Corbin of Macon,

who filed HB 144, was in

attendance along with bill

co-sponsor Rep. Garland

Pierce of Scotland.

“We applaud Rep.

Corbin’s efforts to make

our roads safer and com-

mend DOI Commissioner

Causey for publicly sup-

porting the Hands Free NC

bill ,” said Tiffany Wright,

President of AAA

Carolinas Foundation for

Traffic Safety. “April is

dedicated to raising aware-

ness of the dangers of dis-

tracted driving and this is

the perfect time for law-

makers to act and move

this bill forward.This is a

non-partisan issue and is

ultimately about saving

lives.”

The current texting while

driving law is very diffi-

cult to enforce. The Hands

Free NC bill gives law

enforcement the ability to

stop drivers for holding

their phone, whereas in the

past they would have to

have a secondary reason

like speeding or not wear-

ing a seat belt. The bill car-

ries a $100 fine for the first

offense and a larger fine

and insurance points for

the second and third

offense.

According to NCDOT, in

2018 there were 123 fatali-

ties coded as a result of

distracted driving. How-

ever, AAA Carolinas

believes the numbers are

higher because the behav-

ior is difficult to prove and

motorists won’t readily

admit to doing it. Last

year, there were also 102

rear end fatal crashes and

733 lane departure fatali-

ties. Rear end and lane

departure collisions are a

common result from dis-

tracted driving.

AAA is committed to

helping drivers curb the

urge to engage in distract-

ing behaviors behind the

wheel. Any task that

requires taking your eyes

or attention off-the-road

and hands off-the-wheel

can present a dangerous

risk on the roadway. In

order to avoid distraction,

AAA recommends:

* Disconnect and Drive

Put aside electronic dis-

tractions and never use text

messaging, email, video

games or internet func-

tions, including those built

into the vehicle, while

driving.

* Know where you’re

going: Pre-program your

GPS and adjust seats, mir-

rors, climate controls and

sound systems before put-

ting the car in motion.

* Secure Items: Properly

secure children and pets

and store loose possessions

and other items that could

roll around in the car.

* Snack Smart: Avoid

messy foods that can be

difficult to manage.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Vet’s charities are a good way to say ‘thanks’, but be cautiousBy Richard Eckstrom,

S.C. Comptroller

At first glance, they

appear to be the noblest of

causes. Their brochures

feature images that tug at

the heartstrings – perhaps a

uniformed man in a wheel-

chair, or a tearful widow

accepting a folded U.S.

flag. They use patriotic-

sounding names like

“Honor America’s

Veterans” or “Salute our

Soldiers.”

But too often, so-called

“charities” purporting to

help veterans and their fam-

ilies fall far short of the

charitable image they put

forward.

Independent watchdog

groups in recent years have

called out many veteran-

oriented nonprofits, which

are notorious for squander-

ing hundreds of millions of

dollars annually on admin-

istrative costs, salaries, ben-

efits, and perks. In extreme

cases, more than 90 percent

of donations raised goes

toward overhead – while

vets themselves receive

what’s left over.

To be sure, all types of

charities can be vulnerable

to “bad apples,” which

range from careless busi-

ness models to outright

scams. But veterans have

always occupied a special

place in our hearts, because

we’re grateful for the

tremendous sacrifices

they’ve made on our behalf.

And, unfortunately, our

deep well of gratitude and

goodwill can make us

unsuspecting targets for

those seeking easy cash.

A common denominator

among the bad apples is

their use of for-profit

fundraisers like telemar-

keters and mailing firms,

which can skim off as much

as 80 percent of the funds

they raise. “A small per-

centage of something is bet-

ter than 100 percent of

nothing,” the president of

one “charity” told the

online veteran-issues publi-

cation VetLikeMe. Still, it’s

outrageous when someone

intends to give $20 to a

cherished cause and, in

reality, a mere $4 or less of

their donation goes to the

cause.

Some examples are

downright disgusting. Like

the Center for American

Homeless Veterans, whose

2015 IRS filings showed it

raised $2.5 million in dona-

tions while its expenses

consumed all it raised –

including paying its direc-

tor $340,000 – according to

the watchdog group Center

for Public Integrity.

And the American

Veterans Foundation, which

raised $6.5 million from

2014 to 2016 but spent 92

percent of it on professional

fundraisers and salaries for

its president and his son,

according to a federal com-

plaint filed last month.

And Help the Vets, which,

according to the Military

Times, spent 95 percent of

the $20 million it raised

from 2014 to 2017 on

fundraising, overhead, and

its president’s salary and

benefits.

With so many groups

with similar sounding

names, finding a trustwor-

thy organization to support

can be confusing.

Fortunately, several charity

watchdogs – including

Charity Navigator (charity-

navigator.org), Charity

Watch (charitywatch.org),

and the BBB Wise Giving

Alliance (give.org) – want

to help ensure your dona-

tion will be put to good use.

These charity watchdogs

evaluate national charities,

rate them on the percentage

of revenue applied toward

the intended purpose, and

sometimes publish lists of

the best and worst.

Charities with consistent-

ly outstanding ratings

include:

* The Gary Sinise Foun-

dation (garysinisefounda-

tion.org), the charity found-

ed by the actor-director-

musician which provides

programs serving wounded

veterans, current military

members, and first-respon-

ders

* The Fisher House

Foundation (fisherhouse.

org), which provides free

housing to families of serv-

ice members in military

hospitals and VA medical

centers

* Soldiers’ Angels (sol-

diersangels.org), whose

programs include support

for homeless and low-

income veterans and care

packages for current mili-

tary members

* And my favorite, Honor

Flight (honorflight.org),

which flies WWII, Korean

War or Vietnam veterans to

Washington DC to view

national monuments erect-

ed in their honor. I’ve had

the opportunity to volunteer

with Honor Flight, and it’s

a wonderful tribute that

stirs the hearts of veterans.

Charity watchdogs also

recommend doing your

own research before donat-

ing to any group. Check the

group’s website for infor-

mation about what it does, a

list of its board of directors,

and its latest financial

reports.

Look for charities that

spend 75 percent or more

on “program expenses”

rather than on fundraising,

administration, or salaries.

And they advise skipping

the telemarketers and giv-

ing directly to a charity to

ensure a third party doesn’t

consume a huge chunk of

your donation.

If you’re seeking infor-

mation on a South Carolina

group, the S.C. Secretary of

State’s website (scsos.com)

might be helpful. Inputting

the organization’s name

should tell you the percent-

age of its revenue that goes

toward “program expens-

es.”

We admire our vets. Yet

some need more than admi-

ration. They need help.

What better way to honor

their service than to donate

to a charity that serves their

needs – and to donate wise-

ly.
