Knowledge Organisers in SRS

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are currently in the process of reviewing the content of our curriculum to ensure there is a much greater emphasis on the ‘sticky knowledge’ (knowledge that we want children to remember) that children need in order to not only truly understand concepts, but also to enable them to apply the knowledge, offer informed explanations, make links and spot patterns.

We have looked at each subject and identified the essential knowledge that we feel the children need to know. Following this we have produced ‘Knowledge Organisers’ which are ‘go-to’ documents outlining the essential knowledge that teachers will be covering across a unit of work; including dates, key vocabulary, definitions, diagrams and other key information.

These ‘Knowledge Organisers’ will be shared with pupils and parents with the aim that everyone knows exactly what is being taught, and what the children need to learn.

Attached to this letter is the ‘Knowledge Organiser’ for the Autumn 1 scheme of work for Topic, Maths and Science which the Year 4 pupils are covering this term. If you are a parent of a child in Year 4, please feel free to use these as reference guides for what your child is learning, and as an opportunity to discuss the facts about the topics and how much they have learned. They can also be used to see if they are able to start making links or offer explanations about the world around them.

We will continue to develop the use of Knowledge Organisers and the plan is to produce them for all of our subjects. We welcome your views and any suggestions you may have on this initiative.

Kind Regards,

The Year 4 Team

Top Tips on how to use your Knowledge Organisers to help you learn!

Get out your knowledge organiser when completing

your homework. The key words and information will

help you! Check out the homework website:

For videos, tips and flash card

templates, please scan me.

Use small pieces of card to write or draw your information or

words.

Write the answers or definition on the back.

Ask a parent, friend to test you or even test yourself by

reading and looking at your cards.

Look

I look at the word I want to learn and its meaning.

Say Cover Write Check

I say that word in my head or out loud.

I cover the meaning of the word I’m learning.

I write the word down or even try it in a sentence.

I check the spelling and the meaning of the word to see if I’m correct.

Key Vocabulary

eruption An explosion of steam or lava

from a volcano.

aftershock A shaking event that follows an

earthquake.

magma Hot fluid or semi-fluid material

below or within the Earth’s crust

from which lava is formed.

lava Hot, molten or semi-fluid rock

erupted from a volcano, or solid

rock resulting from cooling of

this.

dormant A dormant volcano is an active

volcano that has not erupted in

the past 10,000 years.

fault Fractures in Earth's crust where

rocks on either side of the crack

have slid past each other.

magnitude If you talk about the magnitude

of something, you are talking

about its great size

landslide A collapse of a mass of earth or

rock from a mountain or cliff

Tectonic

plates

The Earth’s outer shell is made

up of huge slabs of moving rock

called tectonic plates.

Year 4 Knowledge Organiser – Seconds to Disaster

Sticky Knowledge The Earth has 4 layers: The Crust, The Mantle, The Outer

Core and the Inner Core.

Volcanoes are caused when magma rises to the surface of the Earth, which causes bubbles of gas. This gas causes pressure in the mountain, and it eventually explodes.

Volcanoes have a magma chamber, conduit, sill, vent, throat, crater, lava, ash, ash cloud and parasitic cones.

Volcanoes are classified as active, dormant or extinct.

The soil near volcanoes is said to be rich and fertile.

Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault.

The biggest volcano on Earth

• The largest volcano on

Earth is Mauna Loa in

Hawaii.

Counting

1,0002,0003,0004,0005,0006,000

Key VocabularyCounting Moving up or down numbers.

Order To arrange numbers by

ascending or descending.

Compare To examine the difference

between one or two things.

Round To make numbers simpler and

easier to use.

Digit Used to represent a number in a

specific position.

Estimate To make an approximate guess.

Patterns Is something repeated or do you

notice a trend?

Year 4 – Maths Knowledge Organiser – Numbers to 10,000

Sticky Knowledge❑Rounding numbers makes them simpler and easier to use.

Instead of saying exact numbers such as 158, we could

round this to the nearest ten and say 160.

❑When we put numbers in order, we need to compare the value of their digits.

❑When comparing numbers we always use these symbols. Greater than is > Less than is < Equal To is =

❑ If you count backwards from zero, you reach negative numbers. Positive numbers are any numbers more than zero e.g. 1, 2, 3. Negative numbers are any numbers less than zero e.g. –1, -2, -3.

Place ValueIn the place value chart, the 4 digit is in the thousands place so it really

means 4000. The 8 digit is in the hundreds place so it really means 800. The 2 digit is in the tens place

so it really means 20. The 5 digit is in the ones place so it means 5.

Rounding

Page 9: Year 1 Knowledge Organisersyearfourhomework.weebly.com/uploads/6/...4_autumn_1... · These ‘Knowledge Organisers’ will be shared with pupils and parents with the aim that everyone

Place ValueSet out column addition and subtraction

questions carefully so that digits are in the correct columns.

Key VocabularyEstimate To roughly calculate or guess the

answer.

Subtraction To find the difference between two numbers‘minus’, ‘take away’, ‘subtract’

Place value The names of the columns that show the value of each digit.

Regrouping Rearranging groups in place value.EG 10 10s are 100.

Addition To find the total, or sum, of two or more numbers. ‘add’, ‘plus’, ‘sum’

Year 4 – Maths Knowledge Organiser – Addition and Subtraction

Sticky Knowledge❑I know how to set out column addition and subtraction questions

so that the place value columns are correct.

❑When the sum of a place value column is greater than nine, the next column must be regrouped into the next place. For example, if the ones place totals 13, three is recorded in the ones place and 10 is renamed as one in the tens place.

❑We can check answers by estimating then using the inverse operations to make sure our calculation is correct.

❑When solving two-step word problems, decide carefully which

operation you are going to use (+, -, x or ÷)

Key Vocabulary

Matter Objects that take up space and have mass.

Solid A solid holds its shape and has a fixed volume.

Liquid Fills up the shape of the bottom of a container.

Gas A gas can escape from an unsealed container. It fills up the space it is in.

Celsius Is a temperature scale. It is used to tell how hot or cold something is. It is

written as °C.

Particles All materials are made of tiny particles.

Temperature The degree of heat present in a substance or object, shown on a thermometer

Reversible A physical change that can be undone.

Irreversible Not able to be undone – a chemical change has occurred

Year 4 - Science Knowledge Organiser – States of Matter

Sticky Knowledge

Matter (solid, liquid and gas) can change from one state to another if heated or cooled. This is the change of state.

The water cycle is the complete journey that water makes, from one place to the other, and from one state to the other.

The water from a puddle evaporates when it is a hot day and the sun is shining. The liquid turns into vapour as its heated.

When water vapour in the air rises, it cools down. It cools enough for the water vapour to condense and form droplets of water. This is known as condensation.

Rain falls from clouds in the sky in the form of water droplets, this is called precipitation.

Oceans and lakes collect water that has fallen.

Over the final stretch of the race, Kenya's Lawrence Cherono and Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa were locked in a dead sprint to the finish line.

Cherono edged out Desisa by two-tenths of a second, finishing the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 57 seconds

Elephants use their trunks as natural snorkels and can swim as much as 20 miles a day.

The Titanic was the first ocean liner to have a swimming pool

Sticky Knowledge

A flat position is used in all four strokes

Breaststroke arms is a stretch and pull action

Keeping my fingers close together gives me more push and pull in the water
