    Department in this terrorism torn State ofJammu and Kashmir. Establishing a University of Gandhian Studies in

    Jammu Region. Expanding the horizon of Gandhian character

    Special Recognition of Gandhian Centre

    The UGC, on the recommendation of the MHRD,after due consideration, extended the term ofGandhian Centre, JU upto 2012 in 2006.

    The Government of J&K and Council of Universityof Jammu sanctioned in March 2008 a position ofan Assistant Director -- in the grade of anAssociate Professor -- in favour of the Gandhian

    Centre for running a Certificate Course and P.G.Diploma.

    Academic Council of University of Jammu approvedthe launching of the P.G. Diploma Course atGandhian Centre in February 2008.

    Consultancy Services of Gandhian Centre utilisedby the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, GandhiSmriti and Darshan Samiti, New Delhi and GandhiPeace Project, Department of Biology, McMasterUniversity, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

    Syllabus Recently Formulated

    Syllabus for P.G. Diploma in Gandhian

    Philosophy and Peace Studies formulated andapproved by the Academic Council in principleonly recently.

    Other syllabi for Certificate Course and M.A. inGandhian Studies are being formulated.

    M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses and research will dulystart the moment a permanent Gandhian StudiesDepartment with required faculty, teaching andnon-teaching staff is established in the XI Planperspectives.

    Number of Aspirants for Admission

    There are about 1800 aspirants amongst villages

    around Jammu, urban civil society, journalists,senior Army Officers, Corporate Leaders, DisplacedPersons and several others aspiring for becomingstudents at Certificate, P.G. Diploma, M.A., M.Phil.And Ph.D. Programmes of the Gandhian Centre at

    Jammu University.

    These aspirations were expressed during GandhianCentres Survey of Border Areas; Action Researchand Interactive Sessions with Displaced Persons in

    remote areas; Fieldwork visits to villages; PeaceMarches and other such programmes where youthof Jammu participated in ever increasing numbers.

    1. Accession of more than 250 books on Gandhi and peace related themes.

    2. Received several hundred books as donations on Gandhi and peace related

    Existing Faculty and Staff

    Existing Teaching Staff

    Only one as Director (with additionalindependent charge). Existing Non-teaching Staff One M.A. Student working as Administrator on

    a fixed honorarium of 5,400 Rupees per

    month. Students to work as non-teaching staff are not

    available on regular basis due to their busySemester schedule.

    WHAT IS NEEDED ? Gandhian Centre needs permanent 18 non-

    teaching staff and 06 permanent faculty andteaching positions in view of at least fiveensuing courses of study.

    Building Gandhian Centre works from the room of Professor

    Anurag Gangal who is also the Director of the Centre.

    There is no separate room. No space and building provided to Gandhian Centre during last

    more than four years. No space for Laboratory provided. No space for Library and Reading Room provided.

    Working Without Walls and Staff !

    1. No Space allotted to Gandhian Centre!

    2. No Infrastructural facilities to GandhianCentre.3. No Staff other than students working for

    it with fluctuating strength from time

    to time.4. UGC -- despite due sanction letters issued --has not sent any grants to Gandhian Centreat Jammu University for the last three years:2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009 despiteseveral reminders and visits to the concernedofficials.

    constructed

    2. New Building according to requirements already sent tothe concerned officials at Jammu University for theEleventh Plan Proposal of the Gandhian Centre.

    3. On a rough estimate, about 2,00,00,000 Cr. Rupees onetime grant is initially needed to establish the newGandhian Studies Department including requirement ofbuilding, library grants and other infrastructural grantsfor furniture and state-of-the-art ready IT equippedbuilding interiors especially for various types of trainingand project work etcetera.

    Almost all activities of the Gandhian Centre

    for Peace and Conflict Studies at Universityof Jammu stand digitalised in the form ofdocuments, photographs and video-

    graphics. Media response to Gandhian Centres

    activities has also been tremendous.
