The high gas barrier in the film provides both the lasting freshness and prolonged shelf life of the product that consumers expect and a safeguard against aroma loss. SML possesses extensive experience in the coextrusion of barrier film and can point to numerous references that also extend to clean room lines for the medical sector. A wide range of extruders with various screw geometries are employed and these can be adapted to a diversity of raw materials. Accordingly, SML lines can produce barrier films with up to 11 layers by means of a feed block. In addition, a feed block and multi-manifold die combination is available for especially complex and partially asymmetric films. The latest technology also allows a multiplication of layer sequences with the result that up to 64 individual layers can be produced. A further SML speciality is the combination of multiple cast film lines with a laminating line in one system, which is specifically designed for the production of vacuum packaging film. A cast film eventually with EVOH barrier and a single or multilayer PA cast film are produced simultaneously on separated lines, which are located mirror-inverted to each other. Finally they are laminated together inline to form the finished multilayer barrier composite. These lines particularly allow the recycling of the edge trim, have high output and offer enormous flexibility with regard to layer sequence and individual layer thickness. Moreover, they are highly automated with automatic die regulation that can include thickness measurement by an infrared source and automatic film winders that are capable of inline slitting into narrow rolls. Apart from outstanding equipment, SML offers its customers a range of other advantages. These include opportunities to test and develop special film structures on a laboratory line. Production lines can undergo a wet testing prior to delivery, which ensures quick start-up at the customer’s site.
