Aims of this session

• Clarify role of UKCHIP

• Confirm benefits of UKCHIP and advantages to HIS Benchmarking Club

• Discuss progress this year in discussions with Departments of Health and other endorsements

• Broader discussion about joint working with BCS ASSIST

• Agree any next steps to support the Benchmarking Club.

Stating the Obvious

• Informatics is increasingly recognised as a core function of the NHS.

• Informatics is more business critical every year.

• The safety of patients relies very heavily on information that supports clinical and management decision making, and therefore on the Informaticians that handle and process it.

• Done well: informatics is a key contribution to delivering safe and effective healthcare.

• Done badly: informatics can kill.

UKCHIP is the regulatory body for health informatics professionals working or aspiring to work

in the UK.

Health Informatics is recognised as a valued profession throughout the United Kingdom.

All persons who spend a substantial proportion of their role or time working in health informatics in or for the UK should be registered with UKCHIP and thereby certified as professionals who meet defined standards of professional conduct and competence.

Realising the Vision

UKCHIP will realise its vision by:

• Promoting the advancement and dissemination of knowledge about health informatics.

• Defining and agreeing the standards of professional conduct and competence required of people working in health informatics.

• Publishing and maintaining a register of health informatics professionals in the UK.

• Demonstrating its own professional authority and legitimacy through accreditation of its own processes and procedures.

• Registration of individuals within a HIS adds a personal quality mark differentiating your service

• You will know that your informatics specialists have been assessed independently against agreed national standards

• You will know that your informatics specialists have signed up to a professional code of conduct and to an annual programme of CPD

Registration• Registration is currently voluntary, but is

increasingly a requirement of employers.

• Applications only approved following qualified assessment against defined professional standards and competencies.

• Registration is retained only by maintenance of standards and competence, together with continuing professional development.

• Registration can be withdrawn for misconduct.
