Dear Parents and Carers, At certain times in our lives we all search for understanding and for meaning, perhaps during illness or during the loss of a loved one. Often when loss occurs, we are faced with our vulnerability and dependence on others. At this time we can become stressed and many things in our lives become uncertain. During these times we need to remember that Christ knows our human sufferings and stands beside us in our physical pain and mental anguish. Last week, we came together to face the sudden loss of Brent Kelly, one of our beautiful members of the Prouille community. Through prayer we called on our God for strength, courage and support as we journey as a community together through this time of grief and sadness. This week as we prepare for Brent’s funeral let us reflect on the many gifts Brent has bestowed upon us in his various roles as husband, father, son, brother, friend…. May we also keep in our prayers and thoughts at this very difficult time his wife Lisa and children Amanda, Byron, Joel and Georgia. A Reflection A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam And for a moment its glory and beauty belongs to our world, but then it flies on again, And though we wish it could have stayed, We feel so lucky to have seen it. THANK YOU Thank you to Jessica Russell and Fr. David for organising the very respectful and meaningful prayer service in honour of Brent last Tuesday evening. Thank you also to the P&F mothers who organised the soup and to the many members of the Prouille community who attended to offer their support.

It certainly has been a busy week for our Year 3 and Year 5 students with NAPLAN taking place across last week. My thanks to Mrs. O’Brien-Pound, Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Ford, Mrs. Greenwood, Mrs. Chivers and Mr. D’Souza for all their class preparation for NAPLAN. Also thank you to Mrs. Walsh for her assistance in administering the NAPLAN tests. Thank you also to parents for ensuring the students were calm, rested and ready for the tests. Congratulations to the children for their focus, enthusiasm and positive attitude.

Welcome to the Ringrose family - Olivia KR; Matthew 2D; Isabella Stage 2G and the Pimenta family - Lucas KB who have joined the Prouille Catholic School Community. I ask you to join me in giving both families a very warm Prouille welcome and wish them every happiness during their time at Prouille.

THANK YOU Thank you to Bec Luca and her wonderful team of parent volunteers - particularly her team of enthusiastic dads for organising the very successful and delicious Mother’s Day breakfast. Thank you also to the Stage 2 teachers and students for organising the very reflective liturgy in honour of our beautiful Prouille Mothers and Grandmothers.

WHAT IS STAR OF THE WEEK? The purpose of ‘Star of the Week’ is to celebrate students learning achievements. Teachers will be looking at how students apply their knowledge to the best of their ability, with them concentrating on accuracy and precision. Each week a random class will be chosen, covering all classes before the start of a new rotation. We encourage all of the community to congratulate our ‘Stars of the Week’ and celebrate all fabulous learning achievements that are happening daily with all students.

Dear Parents and Friends, I hope that all of your beautiful families were able to spend some time together, in our Blessed month of May, to honour those women in our lives who have influenced us the most. As the famous author Jodi Picoult said so poignantly;

"My mother...she is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her."

SRC REPRESENTATIVE GROUP FOR TERM 2 We were so excited to welcome some new representatives for Term 2 at Week 2’s Assembly. The SRC Executives and I are very much looking forward to meeting with our new group of leaders for the Term at our first SRC Meeting in Week 5. Congratulations once again to the following children;

WEEK WITHOUT WORDS Throughout Week 2, the Captains, Vice Captains, Mission Leaders and SRC Executives attended the St Lucy’s ‘Week Without Words’ Information Session prior to running the stall.

Libby Tomkinson and Gabriella Ribeiro shared their thoughts from the experience:

This week the School captains, Vice, Mission and SRC attended the St Lucy’s Week Without Words Assembly and Information Session. It was quite difficult compared to our structured assemblies or liturgies, although it was still a great experience for us all. We learnt about how many of the children at St Lucy’s communicate, which was very interesting to hear. From iPads to Sign Language, we realised how many different ways there are to interact with others – not only verbalise. A couple of us tried ‘Week Without Words’ for a day or two – only to find how hard this is. Trying to get your point across without a voice or being able to speak is extremely challenging. We only did this for one week. Imagine what it’s like not being able to be heard on a daily basis! We have contributed to this initiative by fundraising for St Lucy’s and selling ‘Week Without Words’ merchandise, such as handballs, mouse pads, pens and several other items. We hope you have enjoyed the past week and acknowledged those who cannot communicate through using their voice. We need to respect and help those who are disadvantaged by a disability. Thank you for your contributions towards this very special week.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL On Monday 15th May we began our St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

There are many people within our community who need support for costs of food, clothing and heating during the cold Winter months. Those who are homeless or marginalised especially feel the effects of Winter and they often develop serious illnesses. For many people, today is filled with despair and hopelessness. But with your support, we can help bring hope, comfort and relief to their lives. The Winter Appeal is for people in need of clean warm clothing, blankets, beanies, gloves, socks and non-perishable food. All contributions will be presented to our St Vincent de Paul parish group at our whole school Mass on Friday 23rd June – the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Your child will be receiving a note regarding the Winter Appeal this week. The specific items to be brought in as well as tokens will be supplied in the letter. Please take a moment to read through it and continue the role of being a ‘missionary disciple’ in this vital cause. FIRST EUCHARIST INFORMATION SESSION – YEAR 3 On Tuesday 16th May at 7pm there will be an information session in Veritas Hall run by our Parish Sacramental Coordinator Sally Oong for those parents of children who will be involved in making their First Eucharist this year. We look forward to seeing you there and beginning such a special journey in the liturgical life of our Year 3 group.

In the midst of National Families Week, may we be truly appreciative of our loved ones...

QUOTE OF THE WEEK/GRATITUDE PICTURE ‘May we, with Christ-like tenderness and compassion, know how to be close and offer consolation to families suffering the loss of a loved one. Above all, may we always be witnesses to the love which Christ revealed through his cross and resurrection, a love stronger than death. Let us also be grateful for our faith in him, which is the only adequate response to our deepest needs in the face of the death of a loved one.’ Pope Francis Wishing you blessings and joy, Jessica Russell Religious Education Coordinator
