Renowned chef, restaurateur, and author Marcus Samuelsson is passionate about the cuisine of America’s diverse immigrant cultures. This month, he returns with a new season of No Passport Required, where home cooks and professional chefs around the country share how important food can be in bringing us together around the table. Join us at 9:00 pm on December 20 for Marcus’s first stop, as he explores Seattle’s Filipino culinary traditions. And, in December, WTTW will be hosting a related food tour event and creating digital content for you to feast on. The tour event and stories will focus on a remarkably diverse half-mile stretch of a single Chicago street (Lawrence Avenue between Western and California) with a selection of restaurants owned and run by immigrants, representing a variety of cuisines: Filipino, Vietnamese, Bosnian and Serbian, Venezuelan, Korean, and Greek. This short stretch reflects the incredible diversity and strength of Chicago and its immigrant communities in microcosm, and we are excited to celebrate it in the coming months. Mr. Smith’s Peach Seeds and Earthrise – Screening

WTTW is partnering with the Chicago Public Library, Beverly Branch, to present two brief documentaries from the POV Shorts series. In Mr. Smith’s Peach Seeds, meet Roger Smith, a retired Tennessee meter reader and cattle rancher. One day in 1968 during a break from work, Roger ate a peach and when he was finished, took out a pock-etknife and carved the peach seed into a tiny pig. Forty-three years later, Smith has carved hundreds of peach seeds into hummingbirds, stingrays, gos-pel choirs, villages, even a baseball stadium with more than a hundred figures. “Given enough time,” he says, “I don’t think there is anything you can’t make out of a peach seed.”

Also on the bill: Earthrise, which tells the story of the first image captured of Earth from space in 1968. Told solely by the Apollo 8 astronauts, the film recounts their experiences and explores the beauty, awe, and grandeur of Earth against the blackness of space.

in many neighborhoods is constant. How do wounded communities heal? In the new initiative FIRSTHAND: Gun Violence, WTTW explores the personal, firsthand perspectives of people whose lives have been affected by gun violence in Chicago.
