Be among the first to see the highly antici-pated season 3 premiere of Victoria, the popular period drama series about the epic life of Queen Victoria, which will return on Masterpiece on January 13 on WTTW.

It is 1848, and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria, who must cope with a crisis that threatens to end her reign. Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes will reprise their roles as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the royal couple balancing the challenges of parenting their growing family with concerns that the vio-lent unrest across Europe will make its way to England’s shores.

WTTW, in partnership with the award-winning POV series and the Chicago Public Library, presents a free screening and discussion of Do Not Resist, a vital and influential exploration of the rapid mili-

tarization of the police in the United States. The docu-mentary puts audiences in the center of the action — from inside a police training seminar that teaches the importance of “righteous violence” to the floor of a Congressional hearing on the proliferation of military equipment in small-town police depart-ments. The screening will be followed by a 15-30 minute discussion.

Making a New American NutcrackerFor generations, The Nutcracker has been a holiday tradition for audiences of all ages. In 2016, Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet gave the work an ingenious makeover and a new setting: the fairgrounds of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. WTTW takes you behind the scenes to reveal how it was made and introduce the A-list creative talents who made it happen. They and many of the performers share anecdotes about the process and recall their first experiences either seeing or performing in The Nutcracker. The film is narrated by actress Neve Campbell.

Music for December holidaysWith Heart and Voice typically plays several weeks’ worth of music for the Advent season leading up to Christmas; this year, each week has its own Advent-related theme. Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, comes early in December this year. Violinist extraordinary Itzhak Perlman presents favorite music for the holiday on his Hanukkah Radio Party, and Candice Agree will feature some related music of the Sephardim on her Baroque&Before series, while Best of Studs Terkel brings back one of his shows for the lights festival. We’ll also be rebroadcasting an edition of The Film Score with Michael Phillips, in which the Chicago Tribune’s movie critic plays a variety of classics from films about winter and its holidays.

More Music for the December HolidaysLarry Johnson will feature holiday music recorded by Kirsten Flagstad, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Bryn Terfel on Arias and Songs, and he’ll end the year with a potpourri of Viennese operetta highlights. On Fiesta, Elbio Barilari features Spanish and Latin-American Christmas carols. WFMT’s late critic-at-large, Andrew Patner, was fond of Eastern Orthodox church music, and we revisit a special edition of his Critical Thinking series devoted to it. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmas has been presented at King’s College of Cambridge University since 1918: 100 years ago. Readers share texts from the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels, then the choir responds with carols, which each year includes one newly composed. This live broadcast is a WFMT tradition. Another is the New Year’s morning airing of New Year’s in Vienna with the Vienna Philharmonic, this year conducted by Christian Thielemann.
