WELCOMEDear WOW Reader,
As we enter the final term of the academic year,
we start to look back at our teams’ successes
throughout the year and prepare to celebrate
our athletes’ achievements at the AU Ball and
AU Colours. For the final year students who
are soon to end their Loughborough career, we
thank you for your hard work and dedication
to Loughborough Students Sport and hope you
have enjoyed every single moment!
Over the past few months we have had
numerous teams competing in the BUCS Finals.
Huge congratulations to those who have won
BUCS Gold, your commitment and class has
been suitably rewarded! To those who narrowly
missed out, the AU is extremely proud of your
valiant efforts and I’m sure it will be Gold round
your neck next year! Check out our dedicated
BUCS Finals article to find out all the details on
how our Loughborough Students got on. We
have also had great success in competitions
outside of BUCS, with fantastic results from the
Dance Club in the LSU Dance Comp and also the
Cheerleading Club in the ICC Nationals!
In the upcoming months we have a number of
events including AU Club Committee Training
Day, Allstars Challenge, AU Colours and the 25th
Annual Athletic Union Ball! Award nominations
for the AU Ball will be open until 29th April so
make sure you put forward a case for your Club
or team mate!
And finally, after all the Exec Elections buzz, I
am proud to announce that my successor will be
Jennie ‘Call On’ Cooper! Jennie has been a solid
member of AU Exec this year as IMS Chair and I
know the AU is in safe hands come the end of
July!
Yours in sport,

Firstly, as newly elected IMS chair I would like to thank Jennie Cooper, Becky Taylor and Teddy Hepworth for their great work over the last year. As they depart, Martha Riggs (vice-chair), Jen Twentyman (Stash & Communications) and Ben Samuels (One Day co-ordinator) take their place.
Last semester Towers established themselves as rivals to reigning
champions Faraday for the IMS title. Towers dominated the table-tennis
one-day event, as the men cruised to the title whilst the women were
narrowly beaten by Rigg-Rut, who have continued their good form in IMS
one-day events this year.
The Rugby 7’s festival was hotly anticipated, as always. Despite the
freezing weather, play continued and in the Women’s Tag Rugby final,
Bill Mo and Harry French shared the title having been inseparable after
two halves of extra time. Cayley, the men’s pre-tournament favourites,
made hard work of their final, coming back from two tries down against
Faraday to win 22-14. Next term will be IMS’s busiest term with 7
one-day events, remaining league fixtures and Varsity places to be
determined:
-20th April, Waterpolo
-1st May, Rock it Ball
-4th and 5th May, Cricket (Nanpantan ground)
-8th May, IMS Varsity at Nottingham
-10th May, Athletics
-12th May, Beach Volleyball
-18th May, Aquathlon
imsupdate
It promises to be a very hectic schedule next term. However, there are
many points still to be won, and I’m pretty sure that Faraday won’t be
so confident on claiming their 5th consecutive IMS title come the IMS
Presentation evening this year, which is to be held in Room 1 on the 31st
of May.
In regards to IMS Allstars, this year it will be bigger than ever as IMS
has developed hugely in participation and standard in the last couple of
years. Therefore, IMS teams will be at their strongest when they come
to play the AU clubs. Last year was such a success for IMS as IMS rugby
thumped the AU team. For me, this really laid down the mark for IMS
and its purpose within Loughborough Sport’s elite pathway as many IMS
players then stepped up to the AU teams after their performances in
Allstars matches.

On 19th & 20th March, Leeds Met hosted the first ever Trophy Tuesday and Big BUCS Wednesday where the best teams in an array of sports travelled from around the country to compete for BUCS Gold. Sports included basketball, rugby league, lacrosse, netball, football, hockey, badminton, squash, tennis, fencing, table tennis, cricket, swimming and volleyball. University sport doesn’t get any tougher than this.
Morning dawned on Trophy Tuesday, and due to weather
circumstances, the Women’s football second team fixture
against Glasgow was unfortunately postponed. Second
up for Loughborough were the women’s tennis seconds
who faced a strong opposition in Durham’s second team.
The girls battled throughout both the singles and double
contests but were simply unable to match a stunning
Durham performance and were left bitterly disappointed but
proud of their performance.
Men’s badminton was the third and final fixture of Trophy
Tuesday, with the seconds meeting Glasgow in the
afternoon. Despite a powerful performance and some
very tight sets, including one Loughborough 26-24 victory,
Glasgow just tipped the scale and claimed the victory 5-3.
Although the day concluded without the outcome many
Loughborough athletes would have liked, all performances
were solid and all competitors did themselves proud. It
was time for some rest before the kick-off of Big BUCS
Wednesday… This was it.
BUCS BIG WEDNESDAY

Loughborough Women’s hockey seconds were first up seeking gold glory
against Edinburgh. The match was fiercely contested with both sides
marking the score sheet. However, Edinburgh were clinical in their finishes
and secured victory with a final score of 3-1.
A few hours later, Men’s Badminton first team took to the stage. The
only thing between them and BUCS Gold were a formidable home side.
Leeds Met struggled to convert their efforts onto the score sheet, and
the Loughborough boys refused to give them many chances to redeem
themselves. A fierce performance ended a season of victory with the
boys claiming a 6-1 win and the BUCS Gold title.
Hoping to follow the badminton boys’ success were the Men’s Lacrosse
first team. Old rivals Durham University were also hungry for glory and
unfortunately took the Loughborough boys down with a final score
of 21-2. As with the women’s fixture, the men’s football final against
Nottingham was postponed, to be played after Easter meaning that next
up for Loughborough were the swimmers. True to Loughborough form,
a range of outstanding performances throughout the season from the
squad ensured Loughborough took gold in the Championship for yet
another year.
Men’s Rugby League seconds were next up, facing Liverpool John Moores
in the freezing conditions. The cold was the least of the boys problems
however, as John Moores powered through the match with their eyes
on one thing: gold. The purple and whites were unable to deter their
opponents and were came runners up following a 60-22 defeat.
Women’s basketball took on Cardiff Met in a stunningly close final which
had every spectator up on their feet. Loughborough dominated right to
the closing seconds of the game, sweeping a 76-61 victory and BUCS
Gold. An extra congratulations goes to Maaja Bratka who was awarded
MVP in the game. It really was a thrilling end to an incredible season for
the girls who couldn’t be happier.
The final fixture of the day was set to be intense as Loughborough Men’s
Rugby League first team took on six times consecutive champions Leeds
Met. The crowd was fierce as both teams fought to the very end in the
bitter conditions. Unfortunately for the Loughborough boys, a perfect
ending to what has been a brilliant season was denied as Leeds Met
claimed the victory 52-10.
Overall, it was an intense but hugely successful two days for
Loughborough sport. Every single team, player and supporter gave it their
all, proven by the three BUCS Golds. Congratulations to everyone who
made it to the finals, this really has been yet another season of walking
on water. Make sure you get hold of an AU Ball ticket before they sell out
to be a part of the AU’s celebrations for another brilliant year of sporting
domination.

Since England netball made history in January by beating the Aussie Diamonds 3-0 in an International Test Series, the spotlight has been on a game which has increased its popularity, ferocity and media coverage massively over the last five years. Loughborough is home for many top-class netballers at club, superleague and international level. WoW caught up with Sophia Candappa, Loughborough Lightning and Loughborough Student’s First Team Captain and England Netball Squad Member as she set out to Australia for further competition over the Easter break.
How did you get into netball? Did you have dreams of playing
internationally from a young age or have your ambitions and goals
developed as you got older?
I started playing netball in Year 5 at my junior school, my ambitions
started to develop when I got slightly older and realised that I had
a talent.
You currently play first team at Loughborough, Captain
Loughborough Lightning in the Superleague and have international
commitments for England. How do you balance all the netball
alongside your degree?
Sometimes I ask myself the same question! In order for me to
balance everything it is all down to time management, making sure
I sit down and plan my week ahead in terms of lectures, training,
food, rest, and socialising.
During the season how many times a week would you say you are
training and competing on average? Does this change dramatically
when you’re off-season?
In season I am training twice a day Monday to Friday and have
approximately 2-3 games a week. This definitley changes during
off-season in terms of competition, there is much more of a focus
on improving my fitness and skill levels.
How much is the rest of your uni life influenced by netball?
Netball takes up a lot of my time, and university is sometimes
balanced around all my training and competitions. Luckily I have
been fortunate to meet so many new people and make friends
through netball.
Did you come to Loughborough purposefully for netball? How do
you think Loughborough has helped your netball and career?
Loughborough University is one of the few universities in the
country to run a High Performance Netball Programme and this was
very influential in my choice of university. However, I did strongly
consider how good my course was at Loughborough, I was lucky
that both fitted in very well.
Have you found the facilities campus has to offer important to your
training?
The facilities at Loughborough are world-class, and the fact that
they are all on your door steps makes training that little bit easier.
The university is one of the only facilities in the country to have a
netball centre, with only netball courts drawn out on the courts. Not
only are the facilities fantastic, but the coaching staff are brilliant
and offer very knowledgeable expertise.
What is it about netball that you enjoy so much, that gives you the
drive to maintain such a commitment?
I love that netball is a team sport, and when you pull something off
as a team, that intrinsic feeling of satisfaction is amazing. Netball
really is about the people you get to work with both on and off the
court.
What are your goals for your netball career over the next few years?
I am aiming to get selected for the World Youth Championships in
August, I have been training for this Championship for the last 5
years as I narrowly missed out on the last one in 2009. I would also
like to secure a place in the International squad after my transition
from the U21 squad.
Do you think the game has changed much, or increased in
popularity, within the last ten years?
The game has seen a massive increase in popularity, with
the media getting much more involved in the sport. Netball is
showcased on Sky Sports, with games to view weekly from the
netball Super league as well as coverage of International Games.
Particularly, since January of this year where England won the test
series against the World Champions Australia, the appetite for the
sport has increased.
Is there anyone who has been a massive help or inspiration to you?
Family or sporting heroes?
My mum has supported me through my netball career through all
the highs and the lows, I would not be where I am today without
her amazing support.
Thanks for your time Sophia, WoW wish you the best of luck in
Australia and for the rest of the season!
Loughborough Lightning take on Yorkshire Jets in their next home
Superleague fixture at David Wallace on April 22nd.

WOWISSUE5.indd 8 4/17/2013 9:55:37 AM
Across February and March Loughborough students gathered to take each other on in the competitive, annual Loughborough Superstars. Victory looked far off as the first round took place on an icy February Saturday. Hundreds of students tackled a tough assault course, gaining points for their hall and hoping to secure themselves a place in the next round of the competition. Up for grabs for the lucky winners in the male and female competitions was a year-long Powerbase membership and £250 prize money for their AU club or hall.
Despite a brilliant turn-out in the first round, the assault course proved
challenging and the times were mixed. However, all competitors were
rewarded with a Superstars T-Shirt, guaranteeing them free entry to the
Final at Hey Ewe and many seemed to enjoy the experience.
The top twenty boys and twenty girls from the first round made it
through to round two where they faced a range of sporting activities
which would test a multitude of sporting skills and strengths. Each
competitor took on long jump, 800m, 200m, a basketball shoot-out
and reaction board. The atmosphere was definitely rife with competition
as the idea of being a Loughborough Superstar began to plant itself in
the minds and determinations of the individuals. There were an array of
impressive performances across the activities, and despite an unfortunate
and painful knee injury which forced one competitor to retire, the round
was a huge success. As the competitors left the semi-final, momentum
was building. Victory was close.
The final took place on stage at Hey Ewe in mid-March in front of a
packed Room One. Having been whittled down from hundreds, just two
boys and two girls remained. All that stood between them and Superstars
glory were the dreaded burpee and rowing tests which would set apart
the superstars from the rest. A gruelling few minutes for the competitors
ensued, but finally victory was announced for Tom Parry (The Holt)
and Sophie Kelly (Women’s Football). Congratulations to the pair, and
a huge well done and thank you to everyone who took part and made
Loughborough Superstars a success for the seventh year running!

Loughborough were a strong presence at the first Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney at the end of March. Three graduates Matt Gotrel, Johnny
Walton and Monica Relph performed excellently, attaining great results for the GB squad. Matt Gotrel’s contribution to the Men’s Eight was particularly
successful as the team powered to a half-boat length lead within the first 500m. This lead was never doubted and the squad powered to gold.

SPORTING UPDATES
With a great BUCS season and the title of British Basketball
League under their belts, Leicester Riders’s Will Maynard and John
Stewart have been selected to represent England in the Home
Nations in Edinburgh. Speaking to Loughborough Sport, John
Stewart had this to say: “It is a big honour to be a representative
at this tournament. When you are playing with talented players it
always makes for a good experience.”
Loughborough University has been selected to host international cricket
this summer as England Women’s team face Pakistan in two one-day
internationals and two Twenty20 fixtures. The action will be taking place on
campus on the 3rd and 5th July.
In men’s hockey, Loughborough Student’s Coaches David Ralph and Jon Bleby
have been appointed assistant coaches by England hockey to work with both
the men and women’s Great Britain and England squads for the 2013- 2016
Olympic cycle.
