bull OBJECTIVE Describe the relationship among modifiable health behaviors and short-term medical costs using a prospective study linking cross-sectional survey data that assessed modifiable risk behaviors with insurance claims

bull SUBJECTS A stratified random sample of 7983 members Eighteen months of medical costs were analyzed Independent variables included self-reported health behaviors of smoking heavy drinking nutrition and physical activity

bull RESULTS Physical inactivity and smoking were significant predictors of higher medical costs Each day a member did not exercise there was a 29 difference in cost Compared with never smokers current smokers had 16 higher costs

bull CONCLUSION Physical inactivity and smoking were associated with higher short-term medical costs among health plan members

bull OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention (LI) in reducing work loss and disability days using a one-year randomized controlled trial

bull SUBJECTS health plan members (n = 147) with type 2 diabetes and obesity Members were randomized to modest-cost (LI) or usual care (UC)

bull RESULTS LI reduced the risk of workdays lost by 643 (P ltor= 0001) compared to UC (annual accumulation UC 349 days vs LI 092 days P = 001) LI decreased the risk of disability days by 872 (P = 00003) compared to UC (annual accumulation UC 53 days vs LI 094 days P ltor= 0001) Similar trends were observed among the subset of people with depression

bull CONCLUSION LIs reduce work loss and disability days associated with diabetes and obesity

bull OBJECTIVE Describe the relationship among modifiable health behaviors and short-term medical costs using a prospective study linking cross-sectional survey data that assessed modifiable risk behaviors with insurance claims

bull SUBJECTS A stratified random sample of 7983 members Eighteen months of medical costs were analyzed Independent variables included self-reported health behaviors of smoking heavy drinking nutrition and physical activity

bull RESULTS Physical inactivity and smoking were significant predictors of higher medical costs Each day a member did not exercise there was a 29 difference in cost Compared with never smokers current smokers had 16 higher costs

bull CONCLUSION Physical inactivity and smoking were associated with higher short-term medical costs among health plan members

bull OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention (LI) in reducing work loss and disability days using a one-year randomized controlled trial

bull SUBJECTS health plan members (n = 147) with type 2 diabetes and obesity Members were randomized to modest-cost (LI) or usual care (UC)

bull RESULTS LI reduced the risk of workdays lost by 643 (P ltor= 0001) compared to UC (annual accumulation UC 349 days vs LI 092 days P = 001) LI decreased the risk of disability days by 872 (P = 00003) compared to UC (annual accumulation UC 53 days vs LI 094 days P ltor= 0001) Similar trends were observed among the subset of people with depression
