Basic facts

• The Swedish Energy Agency is the national authority for energy policy issues.

• The Agency’s headquarters are in Eskilstuna

• Around 230 employees (in Jan 2008).

• The Director-General is appointed by the Government

Systems Analysis Department

• Operative management of the electricity certificate system and the carbon dioxide emission trading system

• Energy system analysis, energy statistics and energy forecasts

• Responsible for the project-based mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol and for establishing the Agency’s role as national Swedish expert authority for these mechanisms

• Policy instruments and regulatory measures in the fields of energy and the climate

International climate work

• Promotes the development of the project-based mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol, i.e. Joint Implementation (JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

• Official Swedish point of contact for JI and CDM within the Climate Convention

• Supports the Swedish Government Offices in climate negotiations

• Participates in EU expert groups

Increased international collaboration

• International collaboration has long been strategic for the development of the Swedish energy system.

• International activities in the EU, the IEA, the Barents Region and the Baltic Sea Region

• Developing countries – energy is central to achieving sustainable development goals and goes hand-in-hand with poverty alleviation

• Bilateral agreements, i.e. on research collaboration with China, USA, Brazil
