WOOD SPECIES CHARACTERISTICS

IMPORTANT: Woodside takes pride in the fact that only top quality materials go into the man u fac ture of our cab i nets. Wood, being a product of nature, varies from one piece to the next - each having its own char ac ter is tics. We cannot guar an tee that the grain pat tern or the natural col or a tion of the wood will match between in di vid u al cabinets. These variations must be ac cept ed as the character of the wood and not as de fects. The following is a de scrip tion of the char ac ter is tics of each of the wood spe cies con tained in this product line.

PAINT GRADE is a closed grain wood, suitable for paint ed surfaces only.

RED OAK is an open grained hardwood, and the grain pat tern can vary from a close vertical pat tern to a “wild” arch shaped pat tern. When stained, the grain becomes more pronounced and darker than the lighter wood in be tween the open grained areas. Pinkish color tones.

WHITE OAK has the same char ac ter is tics as Red Oak, but has brownish and also gray color tones.

WHITE BIRCH is a close grained hard wood which is noted for wide vari anc es in color tone and grain pat-tern. Colors vary through off white, pale yellow, and light brown. White Birch is the select sapwood from the Yellow Birch tree.

RED BIRCH is a close grained hard wood which is noted for its reddish-brown color and varying grain pattern. This species looks similar to Cherry wood, but does not darken dramatically when exposed to sunlight. Red Birch is the select heartwood from the Yellow Birch tree.

BEECH Steamed Beech is made from treated White Beech. It has an even texture and straight grain and a heartwood which is mellow dark pink color in appear-ance.

MAPLE is an ap peal ing closed grain hard wood that is creamy white with a slight red dish brown tinge in color.

KNOTTY PINE is a porous grained softwood which has random sized knots, which vary in size from small to large. There may also be dark colored sap steaks and

sound, unsound(loose), or a knot hole where the knot has fallen out.

CHERRY is a close grained hard wood which will have small dark spots usually with a small hole in the spot. These are sap pockets where the sap has dried. These holes may appear on the surface and are not filled by Woodside. There may also be irregular dark colored sap streaks and gum spots. Cherry wood varies from a white to a red color nat u ral ly. Cherry is noted for its con trast ing hues. All of these fea tures add a very dis tinc tive character to its overall charm and beauty.

ALDER Pale yellow to light reddish brown. Somewhat uniform color throughout. Concentrated modular ray markings parallel to the grain. Pronounced contrast between end and surface grain.

LYPTUS is the trade name of a wood made form a hybrid of two species of Eucalyptus tree, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla. In terms of density and strength Lyptus compares favorably with hard maple, but is very similar in appearance to mahogany in color and grain. With a growth cycle of 14-16 years it produces thirty times the volume of comparable rain forest species. A sample of Lyptus weighed 1.4 times as much as mahogany with both samples being the same size.

MAHOGANY is a closed grain hardwood that var ies from light reddish or yellow-brown to a rich, dark red.

QUARTER SAWN RED OAK Tan to reddish brown. Limited mineral and pin knots. Heavy to light quarter sawn flakes-sapwood may appear.

QUARTER SAWN WHITE OAK Tan to greenish red to brown. Limited mineral and pin knots. Heavy to light quarter sawn flakes-sapwood may appear.

RIFT CUT RED OAK Tan to reddish brown. Limited mineral and pin knots. Sapwood may appear.

RIFT CUT WHITE OAK Tan to greenish red to brown. Limited mineral and pin knots-sapwood may appear.

WALNUT is a close grained hard wood and is noted for its rich ness of color which may vary with white or yel- low colored streaks in the wood. Note: Avail able in the Natural Finish Only.

KNOTTY BUTTERNUT is the lightest colored member of the Walnut family and is sometimes referred to as

White Walnut. The sapwood of the Butternut is almost white and usually quite narrow. The heart wood is light brown, often with pinkish tones variegated with different shades of brown. Features of this rustic wood include random knots varying in size from small to large, which could be sound, unsound(loose), or a knot hole where the knot has fallen out. Worm, grub, and pin holes are also a characteristic of Butternut along with black mineral streaks. Butternut is one of the softest hardwoods.

HEART PINE is an endangered species of wood that is being recycled from 150-200 year old Pennsylvania barn beams. It is know for its variations in color from yellow to brown and its ever present sap content, de spite its age. Heart Pine can consist of knots that vary in size and shape. Heart Pine is a dense specie of Pine and is there fore much heavier by weight than most other Pine spe cies. Note: Available in Natural Fin ish Only.

WORMY CHESTNUT derives its char ac ter from the variety of colors, grain patterns and holes which have been made naturally by the worms that have been in the wood. Some worm holes go through the thick ness of the pieces which allow light to pass through the holes. All the marks made naturally by the worms vary in size and shape. Note: Avail able in the Natural Finish Only.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WOODS & FINISHES

LIGHT COLORS AND WOOD GRAINDealers must be aware that light colors permit all the natural variations of grain and color dif fer ence of light and dark wood to show in the fin ished product. Nat u ral finishes are par tic u lar ly prone to show ex tremes of light and dark colors of the wood.

SHOWROOM COLOR SAMPLESWhenever possible, color chips, swatch es, door sam ples, etc. should be mounted permanently and displayed in an area of your showroom that is void of natural light and extreme heating con di tions. The same condi tions are required of full kitchen displays and all other sam ple ma te ri als.

Due to age, light, heat and abusive treat ment in gen er al, the original color or shade of these sales aids will have a natural ten den cy to darken or fade over a period of time. This is a normal and nat u ral reaction and should be part of the sales pre sen ta tion when ex plain ing hand staining and wiping which brings out the beau ty and char ac ter of the various wood spe cies used by Wood-side. Due to a multitude of ac cept able rea sons in color

change, Woodside can not be held re spon si ble for color match. It is only the dealer’s abil i ty to guard against excessive change and the sales ex pla na tion that will prevent unacceptable conditions later in the sale. Woodside has no control over these sales tools and aids after they leave the factory. There fore, Woodside cannot take the re spon si bil i ty for sales that do not match any of the dealer’s samples.

SPECIAL COLOR MATCHINGWoodside takes great pride in producing the custom finished requested by our dealers and designers. Wood-side has produced thousands of custom finishes in recent years, in both paints and stains.

A swatch, chip or oth er wise ac cept able sample of the special color to be matched must ac com pa ny the dealer’s order. Woodside re serves the right to refuse to produce any special col ors that re quire chem i cal formulas or pro ce dures not con sis tent with Woodside’s standard finishing pro cess. All spe cial colors are con-tingent upon receipt of such colors from our suppliers. Woodside will submit a color sam ple to the dealer for cus tom er ap prov al (3 sam ples max i mum). The col or sam ple must be dat ed and signed by the cus tom er in di cat ing that the color has been ap proved and then returned to Woodside as a color stan dard for man u fac -tur ing. Please rec og nize that there will be a vari a tion from the actual pro duc tion to the color stan dard due to nor mal vari a tions in the wood used in the sam ple and the wood used in production. Also, Glaz ing, Dis- tress ing, etc. have ad di tion al pre mi ums that must be added. No order will be en tered into the fac to ry pro duc tion schedule until the special color sam ple has been approved and re turned to the fac to ry. De liv ery time is determined after the approved sample has been received at the factory.

Please use the following steps to order Special Fin-ishes: 1. Send an existing sample of the finish re-quested whenever possible to the attention of The Misc. Department.

2. Pictures can give us a starting point if a sample is not available. Note: Pictures tend to have many shades of color due to the lighting and printing process.

3. If Paint, choose paint colors form the Sherwin Williams color fan. If Sherwin Williams does not have an existing color that is acceptable, send a color sample or color swatch to use as a color match.

Columbia is now in the process of converting all of its standard hard-wood plywood production to pro-duce formaldehyde-free panels called PureBond™. Cost-competitive with the standard urea formaldehyde (UF)-made hardwood plywood, Columbia’s PureBond formula is derived natu-rally, then enhanced with a proprietary resin, giving it particularly strong bonding and water-resistance qualities. And better yet it enables Columbia to completely eliminate formaldehyde from its standard veneer-core decora-tive panel production.

With a growing focus from the ar-chitectural community on indoor air quality, Columbia’s formaldehyde-free decorative panels are also compliant with the U.S. Green Building Coun-cil’s Leadership in Energy and Envi-ronmental Design (LEED) standards, earning one point for LEED’s EQ Credit 4.4 for Low-Emitting Materi-als: Composite Wood. And PureBond panels also eliminate formaldehyde from both press and product emis-sions, which is good news for every-one, including our employees.

What is Columbia's new PureBond adhesive? It's a formaldehyde-free, soy protein-based adhesive, enhanced with a proprietary resin formulation manufactured by Hercules, Inc. The adhesive was developed cooperatively by Columbia, Hercules and Oregon State University's College of For-esty over the course of several years. Oregon State originally came up with the technology and owns all three patents; OSU has granted all licensing rights to Hercules, and Hercules has granted exclusive sub-licensing rights to Columbia for the manufacture of hardwood plywood, veneer and fl oor-ing. Those rights are good for the life of the patent.

CRAFTMAID KITCHENS 501 S. 9th Street Reading, PA 19602

RE: KemVar® LF Water White Conversion Varnish

As we discussed, in today's market the recent trend has been to provide formaldehyde free products to the manufacturing side. Many will refer to the products as formaldehyde free, where as they are not totally free, but rather so low of an amount that the government does not require listing on a MSDS. Thus some will refer to as "free".

Previously I furnished the Product Data Sheet (CC-F56) and the Material Safety Data Sheet for the Sher-Wood KemVar LF Water White Conversion Varnish. This is our offering to the Kitchen Cabinet, Office & Institutional Furniture, and other Markets requiring a "formaldehyde free" product.

As discussed this is one of the latest technologies being offered to the Kitchen Cabinet Market. The product has many attributes as a finish. The product is designed as a low formaldehyde product (level so low as not reportable on a MSDS). It is VOC (volatile organic compound) compliant and HAPS (hazardous air pollution substance) free. This water-white product has UV Absorber added for non-yellowing characteristics.

The product is designed as a self-seal system, which means the product is used as its own sealer. It should be used in conjunction with other formaldehyde free products such as S64 Wiping Stain, S61 Dye Stain, S66 Glazes, or like, in order to maintain a formaldehyde free system.

It is not recommended to use this product as a topcoat over vinyl sealer, varnish sealer, pigmented conversion varnish, pigmented vinyl, or other catalyzed systems unless they are specifically "formaldehyde free products". These products currently in use have reportable formaldehyde content.

Regardless of the system used there is no guarantee that some type of allergic reaction will not occur. Although we are targeting formaldehyde in the finish at time of application, there are many residual elements within the compound that might cause some type of reaction depending on the individual. Thebest means of defense is to allow open time for the wood product to out-gas and cure. Typically we look at a 30 day time period for full cure, dependent upon curing temperature, humidity level, number of coats, and so forth.

I hope this explanation answers any questions that you might have. Please contact me directly if you should have any specific inquiries.

Sincerely,

JoeJoseph E. Schreck Chemical Coatings Sales Group RepresentativeCraft-Maid 2005-11-14 KVLFWW

DUSTINGLike fine furniture, wood cabinets should be dusted pe ri od i cal ly, depending on the amount of the particular mat ter that may have ac cu mu lat ed. Always dust with a polish-moistened cloth; dry dusting may scratch the surface. It is a good practice to follow the grain of wood while dusting -- wiping against the grain could cause scratches to appear if dust contains grit. In a home or office, res i dues such as cooking vapors, cig a rette smoke or bodily oils might accumulate on the finished wood surfaces. For these types of residues, simply use a damp cloth with a small amount of fur ni ture cleaner. Apply the appropriate amount of pres sure with the cloth to remove residue from the area. Re mem ber to select clean ing cloths that are not made of coarse fab- rics since they may scratch the finish. Cloths made of cotton or flannel are soft and ab sor bent while syn thet ic ma te ri als tend to be the op po site.

New furniture, including kitchen cab i nets, re quire a pe- ri od of curing to take place, ap prox i mate ly six months, so that the finish can achieve its maximum per for mance prop er ties. Avoid placing excessive weight on an un pro -tect ed area or dragging items across the sur face.

CLEANING The most commonly used cleaning agents are water based. They contain degreasing agents as well as clean- ing agents that bring beauty to the wood. Products such as Murphy’s Oil Soap should be used frequently. It will not leave a residue on the finish.

WOOD PROTECTIONA key ingredient to maintain a finish is to eliminate potentially damaging environmental elements such as sunlight, moisture, heat and humidity.

ULTRAVIOLET RAY EXPOSUREWhen the placement of cabinets is being planned, con sid er ation should be given so the furniture is not in direct sunlight. Over exposure of ul tra vi o let rays can impact adversely on the wood finishes.

A good practice to follow when ex po sure to light can- not be avoided is to pe ri od i cal ly rearrange articles (i.e. desk pads, vases, etc.) on finished wood to prevent sun bleach ing.

SPILLSWhen spills occur they should be blotted up as quickly as possible before the liquids penetrate the surface.

Avoid placing damp objects such as towels, flower pots, glasses, etc. on cabinet surfaces without a moisture barrier such as a coaster or tray. It is also a good prac tice not to place hot items such as pots, pans, plates or cups on a surface without coasters.

Expansion of wood caused by an increase in moisture content

Birch 12.36"

Maple 12.38"

White Oak 12.39"

Red Oak 12.40"

The graph above indicates how much a 12" wide panel of various species can expand as a result of an increase in moisture content from 5% to 14%. For instance, the chart re-veals that a Red Oak panel 12" wide could expand by more than a 1/4".

How moisture levels effect movement in woodWood is a hygroscopic material, meaning that it will absorb or release moisture until it is in equi-librium with the moisture in the air. This is true of all wood, whether it is raw or finished. Finishing will tend to slow down this process, but will not eliminate it. When wood is exposed to a constant humidity, it will achieve a constant moisture content (MC). This MC numerical value is called the equilbrium moisture content (EMC). Wood will increase in width and thickness as it increases in MC, and will decrease in width and thickness as it decreases in MC. The above chart shows how the moisture content of wood increases with an increase in relative humidity.

Tips For Avoiding Moisture Related Problems* Door expansion experienced prior to installation on the cabinet box will usually recede once the kitchen has been installed in an air conditioned environment. For this reason, we do not recom-mend trimming or "shaving" the edges of doors, because once they return to original sizing, the doors may appear too narrow.*Unfinished doors exposed to humid conditions will absorb moisture rapidly and expand in as little as 2 days. Woodside recommends unfinished product be finished in their non-expanded state as soon after delivery as possible.*Woodside's doors feature one of the most durable joint construction methods available. However, panel expansion in high humidity climates will put pressure on any joint, regardless of construction method. Customers must not glue, pin, staple or secure the panel to the framing on any wood door or joint failure will result. Woodside will not be held liable in these instances.

It is important to realize the following: Woodside Kitchens, Inc. uses only the highest quality of solid hardwoods and hardwood veneers. However, wood varies in coloring and grain. This may occur throughout your kitchen on adjacent cabinets, between pairs of doors or drawers, on the same cabinet, and even within the same panel.

We call your attention to these characteristics of wood because the effect of these variations in an entire kitchen may be different from what you visualize in viewing a smaller sample.

Accordingly, we will accept orders for the above cabinetry only if accompanied by the customer’s and the dealer’s signatures on this letter of agreement.

I have read the foregoing, and I agree not to hold Woodside Kitchens, Inc. or below mentioned dealer responsible in the event characteristics are later found by me to be less desirable than I had expected.

PINE NOT DISTRESSED DISCLAIMER

______________ _______________ ______________ JJob Number Job Name Dealer Name

It is important to realize the following: We at Woodside Kitchens, Inc. will produce and finish our products using what we consider only the best in materials and workmanship.

Woodside Kitchens, Inc. uses only the highest quality of solid hardwoods and hardwood veneers. However, all wood has characteristics to its own classifications. Pine is a very soft wood, and Woodside recommends distressing all pine kitchens. If a kitchen is ordered without distressing, the cabinets will probably have some marks from the handling and installation of the kitchen.

We call your attention to these conditions realizing that a potential problem might arise. As a result, neither Woodside Kitchens, Inc. nor the dealer can be held responsible for the above mentioned characteristics.

Accordingly, we will accept orders for the above cabinetry only if accompanied by the customer’s and the dealer’s signatures on this letter of agreement.

NATURAL WOOD FINISH DISCLAIMER

Job Number Item Number Description

We are pleased with your desire to purchase a Woodside kitchen in a NATURAL finish. While NATURAL finishes produce a truly beautiful product, they are quite different from other cabinet finishes you are familiar with. Because we desire customers who are completely satisfied, we just want to be sure that you do fully understand the nature of these differences.

Therefore, it is important to realize the following: The beauty of natural finished cabinetry really comes from the true natural qualities of wood itself. Woodside cabinetry utilizes only select solid hardwoods and hardwood veneers. Natural wood, though, varies in color from shades of white, red, black, even green in areas. Mineral streaks may be visible too where parts of the tree absorbed minerals differently in one area than another. Grain and apparent texture will vary from “even” to absolutely “wild”. These natural variations will be present throughout your kitchen. They will occur on adjacent cabinets, between pairs of doors and/or drawers on the same cabinet, even within the same panel. These same variations may also be seen on the edges of hardwood veneered doors when these edges are exposed in a natural finish.

We call your attention to these characteristics of natural finished cabinetry because the effect of these variations in an entire kitchen may be different from what you visualize now in viewing a smaller display or finish sample. The variations are broad, but they are the beauty of natural wood. We mention these conditions because neither Woodside Kitchens, Inc. and/or your Woodside dealer can be held responsible for the type or degree of variations you may actually experience in your particular kitchen.

Accordingly, Woodside Kitchens, Inc. will only accept orders for NATURAL finished cabinetry accompanied by the customer’s and the dealer’s signatures on this letter of agreement.

I have read the foregoing and find the true variations of natural wood mentioned desirable. As such, I agree to not hold Woodside Kitchens, Inc. and/or the Woodside dealer noted below responsible in the event these natural wood characteristics are later found by me to be less desirable than I had expected.

PAINT FINISH DISCLAIMER

Job Number Item Number Description

It is important to realize the following: We at Woodside Kitchens, Inc. will produce and finish our products using what we consider only the best in materials and workmanship.

The beauty of paint is available, but we want to stress the need to understand the potential problems you may experience.

Woodside Kitchens, Inc. uses only the highest quality of solid hardwoods and hardwood veneers. However, all wood has characteristics of its own classifications. Natural expansion and contraction is one of these unique items. The wood in a sense “breathes” depending on the humidity level in the environment. The movement of these woods could at times become visible at joints of door and frame members.

We call your attention to these conditions realizing that a potential problem might arise. As a result, neither Woodside Kitchens, Inc. nor the dealer can warrant its products with respect to these characteristics of painted finishes.

EFFECTS OF HUMIDITY AND MOISTURE IN WOOD DISCLAIMER

Job Number Item Number Description

HUMIDITY: Wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning that it will take up or release moisture until it is in equilibrium with the moisture in the air. This is true of all wood, if it is raw (unfinished) or finished. Finishing will tend to slow down this process, but will not eliminate it. As the moisture content in wood increases it expands, and when it is decreased it shrinks. This movement is thirty-two times greater across the grain than it is with the grain.

All climates, especially humid climates (Southern Gulf Coast, Long Island and New England costal communities) are susceptible to expansion due to moisture. Non air-conditioned homes, regardless of location, are very susceptible to expansion due to moisture and high humidity. During winter, houses should maintain some form of climate control, even in the off season. Controlling the environment will help prevent warping and splitting of the cabinet component parts. The ideal humidity level for wooden cabinetry should be 45% to 55% at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme variations in temperature is a variable that needs to be controlled.

Woodside's doors feature one of the most durable joint construction methods available. However, panel expansion in high humidity environments and contraction in low humidity environments will put pressure on any joint, regardless of the construction method. Woodside will assume no responsibility for improper storage, handling, or installation of its products in high or low moisture / humidity conditions.

Damaged Woodside products, due to improper humidity, will not be replaced under the standard Woodside guarantee, and will not be replaced at no cost to the homeowner or the dealer.

Storage: If any cabinet needs to be stored temporarily, the proper humidity and temperature conditions are equally as important as controlling the proper environment in the home. Please have both the selling dealer and the homeowner sign this disclaimer acknowledging they understand that any cabinet parts including doors and mouldings will not be remade if damaged due to cabinetry kept in an improper humidity environment.
