WOMEN’S WAY OF LEARNING

“Women have a much better time than men in this world; there are far more things

forbidden to them.” ― Oscar Wilde

SEX VS GENDER "Sex" refers to the biological and physiological

characteristics that define men and women.

"Gender" refers to the socially constructed

roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that

the society considers appropriate for men and

women.

WHY BOTHER WITH GENDER IN LEARNING ?

Anectodal reports as well as research on sex

differences indicate that women know and

describe ‘truth-knowledge-authority’ in a

different perspective (Belenky, M. 1986.Women’s way of learning )

The two forms of independent knowing are

interindividual and individual. The

interindividual pattern was used by women

more than by men in this ; the individual

pattern was used more by men than by women. (Bexter Magolda, M. 1992. Knowing and Reasoning in College)

LEARNING DIFFERENCESSome Female learning characteristics: Have more active prefrontal cortex than men and

frontal lobes develop faster (reading-writing-

speech)

Better at multitasking – more communication

between the hemispheres of the brain

Have more P ganglion cells for vision that detect

color and finer sensory movement

Some Male learning characteristics are: More areas in the brain for spatial reasoning

Have more M ganglion cells – movement

Take more time than women to transition

between activities and/or topics

ACTIVITY 1- THE CAR ACCIDENTThe accident A father drove with his son to the soccer game. In the middle on a railroad overpass their car stalled. In the distance, they could hear the whistle of the train. In despair, the father tried to start the engine again but nervously he could not turn the ignition key correctly so that the car was seized by the near-racing train. An ambulance searched for the location and rescued the two. On the way to the hospital the father died. The son lived, but his condition was very serious; he needed to be operated on immediately. Just after arriving to the hospital, he was driven into the emergency operating room, where already the on-duty surgeons were waiting. However, when they bent over the boy, one of the surgeons said with a frightened voice: "I cannot operate - that is my son." How is that possible?

STATISTICS Almost 2/3 of the world’s 792 million illiterate adults

are women.

Improvements in women’s education explained half of

the reduction in child deaths between 1990 and 2009.

Where TVET courses are specifically offered for

women, this is typically limited to traditional female

tasks in the garment, food, health and service sectors.

“To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's

injustice to woman.

Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-

sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has

she not greater courage?

Without her, man could not be.

If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with

woman.

Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than

woman?"
