women's colleges The plaintive echo of Circe's call has beckoned and befuddled the most serious-minded of young men ever since Odysseus made for himself a pleasant interlude in an otherwise hazardous voyage home. For most Yale men the langorous song strikes the ear with equal effectiveness and, similarly, without warning - at night, in midweek, on a balmy spring after- noon. Within minutes the afflicted Yale. man may conceivably discover that he is wending his way over any of several well-worn New England paths in the direction of one of the surrounding women's colleges. The alternatives are many; the choice of companionship unlimited. Some of the leaders in this perennially popu- lar field: Albertus Magnus: Out Phelps gateway, take a left on College, and start walking. Albertus Magnus and six hundred young Catholic ladies are but a twenty-five minute walk. And for the freshman who is tied to the campus, the long, uphill walk is well worth the effort. The admissions policy has radically changed in the last few years, and there are a higher number of acceptable girls than usual at Aggie Maggie. Don't overlook this bet - the convenience of the town date makes this school increasingly desireable as .the weather gets worse and the highways ice up. Bennett Junior College: Across the New York line and not too far from Poughkeepsie, this two-year college offers girls teachable and reachable via Route 34 to Interstate 84. Follow 84 to Brewster turn-off onto Route 22 North, to Dover Plains, left onto 343 to Millbrook. and, 10, you are there. (1 hr. and 30 min.) But once you are there, you imme- diately wonder why you came. Al- though the girls are pleasant enough to oggle, this is the school where you learn that there are more important things than looks, among them 120 brains. One other point. Bennett is the only school with which we are familiar where gentlemen must wear a coat and tie to escort a young lady from the dorms. La dee da. Briarcliff: An interesting land- mark near White Plains, about 60 miles away. Take the Merritt Park- way to the New York side of Green- wich, then on 287 into White Plains. There's a good cartography course there, so you'll have no trouble get- ting back. White Plains is not over- whelmingly exciting but New York can be. (90 minutes). With respect to looks, Briarcliff is among the finest around, especially if well to do blondes are your dish. Recently con- verted to a four year college, the quality of the students has gone up in recent years, and this is a good bet for a Toad trip. Connecticut College: A four- year place in New London, well- stocked with women of considerable intelligence. East on Connecticut Turnpike via New Haven connector. Fifty minutes and sixty cents later turn off on Route 1 to New London. The only problem with this school is that it is undoubtedly in one of the worst towns on the eastern sea- board, loaded with submarin jockeys and the Coast Guard Aca- demy. But possibly because of th above two problems, these girls ar known to be very hospitable to Yalies. Overall, the school and th girls are attractive and intelligent a sort of the girl-next door type, and if you can get out of New London, chances are you'll have an enjoyabl date. Mount Holyoke: An enjoyabl museum in South Hadley, Mass., 7, miles away. Best bet: Interstate 9 past Hartford and Route 5 to sout Hadley Falls, right onto 202, left 0 ll6 into South Hadley. (1)1,\ hours) Unlike the above schools, girls 1\ Holyoke are not known for an quality more than their general de- privation of physical attractiveness. For this reason, and because they must compete with Smith College, just around the corner, Holyoke girls are usually very loyal to their dates. Perhaps this is the reason for the classical Yale assesment of this col- lege, "Smith to bed, Holyoke to Wed." Smith: In no-longer-so-rustic Northampton, Mass. open to week- end infiltration. Just head for Holy- oke but keep going on Route 5, at end of Interstate, to the North. (1~ hours). Although you couldn't tell by the campus, which many people miss when they initially drive through Northampton, due to its re- semblance to the town, this is the place. Stocked with more than her , share of talented girls, Smith offers something for everyone, and North- ampton provides many bars in which to get acquainted. One word of cau- tion: don't attend the fall house par- ties unless you like standing in line. Above' all, remember that classical Yale proverb, "Smith to . . ." etc. Radcliffe: Go to Cambridge, Mass., then look for Harvard boys. Radcliffe girls, as a rule, won't be with them but you're close enough to ask. Don't get into Boston - you may not get out. (2Jf hours). Yalies don't belong here -'- Beware. If the hallenge is irresistable, and you feel you must, try everything once, go fully armed with all the intellectual ammunition at your command, and be prepared to discuss everything from Spinoza to Vietnam. lleally, there are much better things ('0 do on dates. Sarah Lawrence: A lively spot, 1)0 minutes down the Merritt Park- way to Bronxville, N.Y. Great place for ethnic groups and free thinkers nns sports coats and ties. Sara-Lou's have an interesting philosophy of life which revolves around individual- ism and non-conformity. This can be a real advantage when dating one of these girls, but one should go pre- pared for the unexpected and E:njoy It. Vassar: In Poughkeepsie, l~.y., where people are friendly, pro~per- ous, and able to spot a Yale man miles away! Follow the Bermett directions (see above). Take a ~ight in Brewster to route 22, a left on 55 at Pawling, and follow your nose to Poughkeepsie. You can't miss the architecture. (1 hr. and 45 min.). This school is undoubtedly ODe of the most popular among Yalies and for good reason. Combining grace charm, style, and talent with attrac~ tiveness and personality, Vassar girls are a good bet for those lonely Situr- day nights. Poughkeepsie, aside from befriending Vassar, is in New Tork, where the drinking age is but 18, and many bars and dance hUs among them Club ll5 and Williams: offer many off-campus activitie, for the Young-at-Heart. Wellesley: Located in the town of the same name just this side of Boston, off the Mass. Trpke. Watch for short turn-off on 16, "'hich takes you to the front gate. (2)f rrs.) N at considered in the Yale sphe.; of influence, due to its proximit, to Harvard, Wellesley neverthele, is worth the 21f hour trip. Locate] on a beautiful rolling campus, WelI\slev offers personable, attractive Y>ung ladies and campus surroundings that are very conducive for a snow job. It is also conveniently located Wthin twenty minutes of Boston, a 'own ~here there is always somethini go- mg on. . :.:.:.:.:.:-::~:: "f!\;'~ ~. ~:.::::-:::::~ •• ::. ~1-~"-"':. : ~••:::: ••••• ..::.~: s.» : •.;.: ••••• :~ ••••••. :•• Y'c .ziIJ1}@l$ 121
