Over the past five years therand has dropped in value fromaround R7.50 to the dollar, toits current levels of over R11.So, roughly speaking, yourrands are worth 40 percentless than they were in 2009.But you can stop blamingNkandla and the Guptas.The decline has been causedby all sorts of things, manyof which aren’t specific to SA.In the complex global financialsystem, investors see us as part
of a wider group of emergingmarkets, and how they feelabout the group as a wholeis what really counts. Thinkof it like a box of Smarties:
you don’t just buy the red ones.You either buy them all, or noneat all. To investors, we’re thered Smarties.
When the rand weakens, we pay more for imports,including computers, carsand basmati rice (Noakes willbe smirking). It also means we
pay more for crude oil, which
increases the petrol price.So besides costing you more
to drive to work, it translatesinto higher transportation costsacross the board, which is why
you end up paying more for justabout everything, from foodto clothing to flights for yourDecember holiday.
4. The price isn’t right“Back in the day, R5 would getme…” These days, it seemsthat anyone over 25 remembersa time when things weren’t soexpensive. It’s no longer just
your grandparents telling youhow they used to pay sixpencefor dinner, or how they boughta car for R250 – we’ve all seenthe impact of inflation. Part ofthat has to do with the weakerrand, of course, but inflationis a reality all over the world.
The good news is that theReserve Bank is helping usout. It has the job of keepinginflation between three andsix percent so that thingsdon’t get out of hand. And,
generally, it’s done pretty well.
Not so long ago, inflation wasover 20 percent, which madelife miserable for just abouteveryone. (Imagine your oatscosting R20 today and R50 infive years’ time – that’s whatused to happen.)
But even with the brakes
on inflation, you might still feelthat it’s more and more difficultto stick to your budget. This isbecause the country’s officialinflation rate and your ownpersonal inflation rate maybe quite different. Inflationis worked out based on whatit costs to buy a set of itemsthat includes everything frommargarine and bananas toconcert tickets and jewellery.The difference in price between
what that “basket” costs today
and what it cost last year is theinflation rate. The problemcomes when that “‘basket’ isn’treflective of your reality,” saysVisser, and let’s face it: whenlast did your salary increasecome close to matching theinflation rate? Which is why“it’s really important to use yourpersonal inflation rate, becausethat’s what counts,” adds Visser.
5. Safe as houses?
So you recently bought your first property (mazeltov!). It’ll be worth a lotmore next year, right? Maybe.Many people assume thatproperty values always moveupwards steadily, but that’snot necessarily true. South
African property prices enjoyedsome exceptional growthbetween 1998 and 2008,but average house prices inthe past five years have goneup very little, and in some
parts of the country housesare worth less now thanthey were in 2009.
What gives? House pricingis affected by, among otherthings, how much disposableincome people have and how
willing the banks are to awardhome loans. And you’ve justheard that banks are clammingup and consumers have lessmoney because everythingis more expensive. Result?The precarious state of
property value.
But it’s not all doom andgloom. A recent report from theWorld Economic Forum foundthat SA has the best-regulatedstock exchange in the world,our banks are the sixth most
sound and our levels of investorprotection are the tenth best
worldwide. Those are massivekudos for SA, because anyoneinvesting here is pretty welllooked after. And as long asthat’s the case, this is a prettygood place to have your money.

The brain’s so-called negativity bias,first described by psychologist Dr RoyBaumeister, explains that negativeexperiences have a more enduring impacton emotion. The brain reacts pleasantlyto positive stimuli but painfully to negativestimuli. This ability to be able to quicklyinterpret bad news evolved to keep us
out of harm’s way, but it also means you’ll remember being rejected before you remember being praised.
This is true when it comes to money(you will be far more upset by losinga chunk of it than you’re pleased bylanding the same amount); relationships(negative first impressions are difficultto overcome); or your career (negativefeedback has a much more profound effectthan positive reinforcement). “We hateto make other people feel bad almost asmuch as we hate to feel bad ourselves,”says Klipin, “so we fear disappointing the
other person [because it could] lead tous being rejected by that person.”
How much is too much?While some people are comfortablesaying “no”, there are those who find thesting of displeasing others absolutelyintolerable. These people are your classic“pleasers”. If you’re a pleaser, you maybe so relationship-orientated that you’llautomatically say what someone else
wants to hear, agree with someone else’sideas or bow to another’s agenda. A pleaseris usually well-liked, and often feels taken
advantage of and unsure of her decisions.Take Noluthando*, a receptionist at
a law firm where her dedicated approachis critical to the career success of her boss.She has spent most of her adult life beinga dependable rock to her friends, constantlydropping whatever she was doing after onephone call. The 29-year-old Capetonian hashelped with celebrations, break-ups andeven employment for her “sisters”. But inthe process, she admits that she has oftensacrificed her own happiness. “If someone
wanted to a go to a specific club, I’d go evenif I didn’t like the place. If another wanted
to borrow my favourite dress, I wouldagree even though I knew I’d never see itagain. If someone wanted to watch a playthey couldn’t afford, I’d pay for both of useven though I knew that when they hadmoney, they wouldn’t do the same for me.”
After making new friends, Noluthandofinally bid farewell to her old circle: “Forthe first time I experienced what respectfulfriendships were actually about. Once
you’ve seen the light, you can’t go back.”Still, Noluthando couldn’t bring herself toactually confront her old friends. She juststarted distancing herself gradually. >

Replace your automatic “yes”,with “I’ll think about it” If you haven’t used this particulartechnique, you’ll be awed by theresults. “I’ll think about it” putsyou in control, softens the groundfor saying “no”, suggests you’reactually weighing importantfactors and, most importantly,allows you to think things through.A no that follows thoughtfuldecision-making is betterreceived than a knee-jerk no.
Soften your languageTry “I’m not comfortable withthat”, “Let’s agree to disagreehere” or “That’s a good/nice plan,but I won’t be able to…” This isa variant of the shit sandwich Oreocookie technique, in which you saysomething positive (“You’re sucha lovely person”), sandwich in thefilling of a tactful no (“I don’t thinkyou and I have a romantic future”)and then end with another cookie(“I’ve really enjoyed the timewe’ve spent together”). It’s stilla no, but a softer one.
Contain your feelingsNo is best deployed pleasantly,with an air of calm. (Tricky,because you’re likely feelingvery far from it.) Outward calmhelps quieten your inner turmoil.What’s more, it will reduce thenegative impact of your no on the brain of your audience.You don’t have to be a smiling

tame any angeror aggression.
Refer to your commitmentto othersSay “no”without appearingselfish or uncaring by referencingyour conflicting obligations toother people. “I’d love to help,but I’ve already agreed to helpmy brother/colleague/studentthen and I can’t possibly let him/ her down.”
