2012 Homeless Female Veteran’s Organization Recipient

Cathy Bennett-Santos is the founder of the National Alliance of Women

Veterans which acts an advocacy and referral organization for military women;

headquartered in Philadelphia, PA since 2005 and incorporated in the State of

Pennsylvania. This organization began primarily as an effort to address the needs of

women who have served in the military and have been sexually assaulted through

legislative and policy at every level of government; activism, speaking

engagements, outreach, and various other mediums for networking the many

resources available to help solve problems associated with women veterans. Cathy

Santos states:

We have been extremely successful in promoting the culture of the military as it

relates to women who have served and who are transitioning back into civilian life

and have experienced sexual assault and other unfortunate situations while serving

in the armed forces. Our “Women Veteran’s Day Tributes” of 2006 through 2009

and the 2010 "Women Veteran's Roundtable, which have all been instrumental in

allowing individuals of the veteran's community to network providing support and

activities to women who have served in the armed forces. We believe that

Philadelphia is the to realize the importance of supporting our organization in

making a significant impact in what is one of our nation’s most quieted but

extremely complex and life-changing dilemma any woman can experience. We

continue to reach out to other women's groups with a desire of providing hope and

healing to hurting women in Philadelphia and our country.

Cathy Santos is involved in community and civic activities supporting grassroots

organization; providing economic development expertise to nonprofit organizations

and related organizations and agencies; also actively involved in faith-based

activities; community organizer and activist on youth and education issues.
