YWIB Capital Region Call for Volunteers

Young Women in Bio (YWIB) is a special initiative of WIB designed to encourage young girls to explore opportunities, education, and careers in STEM. Our events combine lectures, hands-on experiments, on-site laboratory tours, and networking opportunities. We have arranged visits to organizations spanning the public and private sectors, including Walter Reed Medical Museum, Pixelligent Technologies, and the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center. In April, YWIB Capital Region hosted the keynote event for the National YWIB “Spring into STEM” initiative: a career panel featuring NIH Institute Directors, surgeons, lawyers, and other women in high-profile STEM-based careers with over 100 area high school ladies in attendance. This year during “Spring into STEM" YWIB Capital Region will attend the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington D.C., an event which draws over half a million visitors in one weekend. We are also debuting a Science Behind the Movies neuroscience seminar series this spring in collaboration with NIH. In addition to our public efforts, YWIB Capital Region plans to expand our marketing by launching a webpage and enhancing our social media presence. YWIB efforts are exclusively supported by WIB volunteers. Volunteers create, organize, coordinate, and attend events throughout the academic year. If you would like to participate in this exciting mentorship opportunity, please contact Kelly Beazley at [email protected]

WIB Capital Region Hosts Annual Holiday Party

Another great WIB event and WIB year for the record books! Long-time WIB members and newcomers from various organizations and stages of their careers, came together to close out 2017. The founding chapter rebranded in the fall to become the Capital Region Chapter of Women in Bio, reflecting even more the growing BioHealth Capital Region initiative in the greater DMV. This change also reflects a new initiative to broaden the impact and reach to include more events in Northern Virginia, Frederick, and beyond. WIB-Capital Region also established the chapter's first Advisory Board, which is comprised of 5 long-time Women In Bio members. Also announced, that in late 2018, the chapter will be re-instating the Annual Dinner, a long-standing tradition which will highlight women in bio across the region. Join us for more information about the event. 2018, here we come!

YWIB Capital Region attends 3rd Annual STEM Event for Young Women

In November, the 3rd Annual STEM Event for Young Women was held at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Hosted by the laboratory of Dr. Rena Lapidus in partnership with Young Women in Bio (YWIB) Capital Region, and supported by the National Cancer Institute Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) program, this event was attended by 28 high school ladies from 5 schools. Students isolated DNA from cancer cells under the supervision of graduate students, and then spoke to women professionals, including a genetic counselor, oncologist, laboratory technician, nurse, and biomedical engineer. After eating pizza and talking with the panelists, students toured a drug discovery lab, saw the massive robotic freezer, and toured the mouse facility.

Welcome to the first installment of the WIB-Capital Region Members’ Spotlight

We are kicking off this series with Lisa Richardson, Assistant Treasurer, Sr. Directory, Treasury, Emergent BioSolutions Inc., who is also one of five women making up the new WIB Capital Region Advisory Board. Lisa Richardson has an extensive background in finance and business development. As a long standing WIB member she strongly believes in the value of mentorship and has great advice for young women just starting out their careers. Join us for the full interview.

Spotlight on Melissa Dowd

What is your title and company you work for? I am an Account Manager for the Scientific Division of Aerotek in Eastern PA. We provide top talent on a contract, contract-to-hire and direct placement basis for your project-based, seasonal, or niche requirements within the Life Sciences, Chemical and Consumer, and Healthcare industries.

What's your favorite thing about your job? I love the thrill of the hunt in identifying the perfect candidate that fulfills a client’s business need. Strategy around delivery and fulfillment has always been enjoyable for me, as well as a strong suit. It is also very rewarding to be of assistance to candidates as they progress their careers in the industry.

What's your role in WIB-Philadelphia? I currently serve as the Programming Co-Chair. I help to plan and organize the content and structure of our monthly programs. We focus on driving exciting programs for professional development as well as socialization that our members and future members want to be a part of.

Why did you join WIB? I wanted to be a part of something special where I could bring my experience with women’s leadership as well as my passion. It is really exciting to see how we have grown and developed as a collective group in the last 10 months.

Where was your favorite vacation? In high school I had the fortunate experience to be a part of a Japanese Exchange Program and was able to travel to various cities and prefectures in Japan. I was there for two weeks and that included a one-week home stay and a week of travel. I was so grateful to explore the culture in Japan. I truly believe if I didn’t have all my family and friends here in the states, you would find me, most likely, somewhere near Kyoto.

WIB-Pittsburgh Partners with Chatham for Women Business Leaders Breakfast

December 8, 2017, Women In Bio-Pittsburgh partnered with Chatham University Center for Women's Entrepreneurship's Women Business Leaders breakfast. Leanne Meyer, Director of Leadership Development, Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University gave an inspiring talk on negotiation strategies for women. Leanne said that although women are usually very good at negotiating, they often choose not to negotiate. Women often choose to put relationships ahead of the conflict that may arise from negotiations. There are also a number of things that women can do to be compassionate, smart and powerful in their negotiations including: use a feminine style, plan, legitimize your ask, make yourself feel powerful, and be comfortable with the word “no.” Leanne was an engaging speaker as she interspersed anecdotes with her poignant advice, providing an inspiring experience for WIB-Pittsburgh members and other members of the Pittsburgh community. Learning about negotiation tactics and the science that supports them was a great backdrop for attendees to enjoy good food and networking on a Friday morning.

"Dancing with the Flu" - The Science Behind Antibody Discovery and Production

Curious about how antibodies fight the flu? February 6, 2018, San Francisco YWIB is excited to host an event with Genentech for students interested in learning how scientists discovered antibody therapeutics that combat the flu and how antibody therapeutics are made. Students will participate in interactive sessions and a tour, where Genentech scientists will discuss how they develop new therapies to benefit patients. Students will also meet professional women from Genentech, who will share their personal experiences at a pizza party and Q&A session. This event is for middle and high school girls.

Biotech Entrepreneurship for Girls with YWIB hosted by JLABS

On November 7, 2017, San Francisco Bay Area YWIB in partnership with Johnson and Johnson Innovation (JLABS) held a unique event focused on introducing high school women to biotech entrepreneurship. Twenty-five high school students from around the Bay Area attended the afternoon event in South San Francisco. Four female biotech startup founders and CEOs presented investment pitches to the audience. Casey Lynch, CEO, presented Cortexyme, Dr. Crystal Nyitray, Ph.D, Founder and CEO of Encellin, Dr. Alicia Scheffer-Wong, Ph.D, Founder and CEO, presented Floragraph, and Dr. Emma Taylor, MD, CEO of Naked Biome; presented her company pitch, including a description of the technological innovation, the unmet medical need addressed by the technology, a development plan, and an ‘ask’ for funding. The students in the audience were tasked with evaluating each company as if they were investors. In small groups, the students discussed and critically evaluated each of the four technologies with the help of YWIB and JLABS mentors. They reported that the material was “challenging, but in a good way.” Following the small group discussions, the larger group reconvened for a panel discussion on startups and entrepreneurship. We wish to thank Johnson and Johnson Innovation and JLABS leadership, the dedicated workshop volunteers, and our attendees for their engaging participation and feedback.

WIB-Southern California 2017 Holiday Party

December 5, 2017, the Southern California chapter of Women in Bio hosted their annual Holiday Party. TriNet, Alexandria, and Medmarc sponsored the event at the beautiful Green Acre Campus in San Diego. The location is fantastic and there was plenty of space for the many attendees to walk around or network while sitting at big tables. Wine and beer were served, and snacks were nicely displayed on a long table. While members and guests chatted, delicious hors d'oeuvre were passed around throughout the evening. Alyssa Master, the SoCal WIB Chair, spoke about WIB and its mission. She also introduced representatives of TriNet and Alexandria, who gave brief overviews of their services to help San Diego’s thriving biotech community. While socializing, attendees bid on wonderful silent auction items, which was a real success! We closed the activities of 2017 in style with a wonderful party, and look forward to great events in the new year!

WIB-Southern California Entrepreneur Boot Camp

Our experience is that the skills and knowledge to raise professional money are very different from building a successful company. CEO's know how to sell their product to customers, but selling to investors is very different, challenging, and non-intuitive. Most (99%) of startup CEO's do it incorrectly and are unable to raise money.

George Kinney of Shepherd Ventures will lead the Boot Camp which will answer the following mysteries:

• Why is it so hard for me to raise money?

• How come only 1% of companies get funded by VC’s?

• What are investors’ secret unfair agendas?

Applications Accepted for the Donald A. King Summer Research Fellowship

In 2005, the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) established the Donald A. King Summer Research Fellowship program in honor of Donald King who passed away in 2004. Don was a tireless advocate for Huntington’s disease (HD) families and served as HDSA’s Chairman of the Board from 1999 to 2003. The purpose of this fellowship program is two-fold: first, to attract the brightest young scientists into the field of Huntington’s disease research; and secondly, to facilitate meaningful HD research to clarify the biological mechanisms underlying HD pathology.

The Fellowship sponsors college students to pursue an HD research project during the summer months. Fellowship recipients, working under the supervision of senior HD scientists, will undertake a project that is focused and achievable in a short timeframe, yet helpful in guiding future HD research. Applications are accepted between December and March each year. The deadline for 2018 fellowship applications is March 2, 2018, 5:00 p.m. (EDT). Please submit proposals via email as a MS Word or PDF file. Learn more.
