WIB-Atlanta: "How much do you know about personal finance management?" So, you think you know all about money management? Li Ding, once a Medical Physicist now a Senior Independent Financial Advisor, will speak on the importance of personal finance management for women in STEM. WIB-Atlanta Presents CDC Museum Tour & Reception, “Ebola: People, Public Health and Political Will” WIB-Atlanta Chapter organized a fantastic trip to CDC museum on May 24, 2018. Hearty thanks to event partners, Georgia Bio, IP Practitioners and Professionals of Atlanta (IP3), and the Georgia Global Health Alliance for a tour of the CDC Museum and a networking reception. There were around 50 people who attended this event - what a great turn out! Scott Frank (AT&T and IP3) and Rebecca Burns from Arbor Pharma were introduced over yummy Hors d’oevers and drinks in the reception. Judy Gantt, Director of the CDC Museum, and the museum curator, were also introduced. Brian Harcourt added to the show and made this tour most interesting. Brian was deployed during the Ebola response and he talked about his experiences during the entire tour. Thanks to our WIB-Atlanta Program Committee Co-Chair, Katie Bowden (PhD Biologist at CDC) for all her initiatives to make this event possible. It was indeed possible to see how CDC scientists merge old-fashioned detective work

WIB-Greater Montreal Presents: "Disruptive Technologies in the Life Sciences and Healthcare" With technology advancing at record pace, we are experiencing a seismic shift in the way we do business not only in the life sciences, but across all sectors. Emerging technologies such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Deep Learning will revolutionize data collection and interpretation, healthcare, and product development. In June 2018 at the NEOMED Institute, the Greater Montreal chapter of Women In Bio will host a half-day conference bringing together experts and innovators to discuss the challenges as well as the opportunities offered by these new technologies. Experts will present the evolution of disruptive technologies in the life sciences and healthcare, followed by more in-depth explanations of blockchain and AI. Panel discussions will assess the applications, opportunities, and challenges that these technologies present to the field. The final session will address implementation of disruptive technologies in the Quebec healthcare system. Speakers and panelists will include experts in blockchain, AI, deep learning, and ethics, entrepreneurs in the AI sector, and professionals in product development and support. This conference will be

WIB-Metro New York and Women of Watson Health Present: "Digital Transformation in the Life Sciences" Learn how digital technology and transformation can optimize outcomes, show the value of therapies, and build consumer trust through the value chain, from R&D to point of care. Join us June 12, 2018 for, "Digital Transformation in the Life Sciences," sponsored by IBM Watson Health. The event will take place at IBM Watson HQ starting at 6:00 p.m., featuring a keynote address by Dr. Francoise Simon of Columbia University, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and author of, Managing Biotechnology: from Science to Market in the Digital Age. A panel discussion and networking reception will follow. WIB-Metro New York Presents: "Orphan Drug Boot Camp" The Orphan Drug Act of 1983 is considered a resounding success, as last month’s WIB-Metro New York event on Orphan Drugs proved. Orphan Drugs are used to treat disease that affect fewer than 200,000 individuals. These therapeutics are special: their benefits are transformative in nature, and often they represent the 1st therapies for disease. The impact of rare diseases is nothing short of staggering, when you look at the statistics: before the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, there were 12 therapies approved for orphan diseases; as of April 2018, there were 677 approved therapies for orphan drugs that treat 250 diseases. There are more than 7,000 rare diseases, 805 of which are

genetic in origin. While one in 10 people are affected by rare diseases, 50% of them are children. Orphan drug designation (ODD) provides certain benefits, including exclusivity, a prescription drug user fee act (PDUFA) fee exemption, and approximately 50% tax credits. ODD also enables a faster review process, with fewer, smaller trials and a lower evidentiary bar required by regulators. The discussion also touched upon the Rare Pediatric Disease Priority Review Voucher Program, where the FDA will award priority review vouchers to sponsors of rare pediatric disease product applications that meet certain criteria. Under this program, a sponsor who receives an approval for a drug or biologic for a "rare pediatric disease" may qualify for a voucher that can be redeemed to receive a priority review of a subsequent marketing application for a different product.

Women In Bio-Pittsburgh’s 3rd Annual Family Picnic Potluck On June 20, 2018, WIB-Pittsburgh members and their families gathered for the third annual “Welcome to summer” potluck picnic. It was a wonderful social event hosted at the Anderson shelter in the Shenley Park, one of people’s favorite parks in the city. The delicious catered barbecue meat was accompanied by amazing side dishes and desserts that everyone brought to share. Luckily, it was a beautiful day with nice sun which made this event even more enjoyable. It was the perfect occasion for members to get to know more about each other in a relaxed atmosphere, while their spouses connected and their children enjoyed the playground nearby. This is one of the most popular annual event of our chapter and will definitely be repeated next year!

WIB-San Francisco Presents: "Partnering Devices and Diagnostics with Pharma" Partnerships between pharma and diagnostic device companies are becoming increasingly important as pharma companies seek ways to differentiate their products, and precision medicine demands the need for companion diagnostics. Commercial market access, value, and regulatory needs require close coordination between pharma and diagnostic device partners. As both entities have distinct business models, investment paradigms, and tolerance for business risk, partnering and deal term negotiations can be challenging. Join us, June, 19, 2018, for a panel discussion about the creative solutions that can bridge these gaps and lead to win-win successful long term partnering relationships.

WIB-San Francisco: Join One of Our Growing MAPs Programs! The WIB-San Francisco Bay Area’s MAPs program is growing and we now have several opportunities to be mentored or become a mentor! WIB-Southern California: "Women Leaders Impacting Life Sciences" On May 23, 2018, the Southern California chapter of Women In Bio (WIB) and Launch Bio co-hosted a panel discussion entitled Women Leaders Impacting Life Sciences. The event was sponsored by Launch Bio, which provided a gourmet networking reception with Napa Valley wines and delicious food, from pizza and sliders, to roasted vegetables, hummus, and pita bread. The room was full when a representative of Launch Bio kicked off the event and described the activities of the organization. Daniela Zaczek spoke about WIB, and the panel discussion began with Sibylle Hauser introducing the moderator, Robin Toft, and the three panelists: Marie Wesselhoft, Stephanie Venn-Watson, and Alicia Levey. Robin believes in diversity in the workplace and stated that companies with men, women, and people of different age, race, and ethnic backgrounds tend to be more innovative than more homogeneous companies. In her role of president of an executive search firm, she promotes workplace diversity and recommends to make hiring decision based not only on candidates’ skills and experience, but also on their potential to bring value to the organization. In addition, in particular millennials and women, like flexibility and career progression. Join us to continue the discussion.
