University of
Nevada, Reno K-KIDS: The elementary version of cki
By Megan Jackling
Circle-K International is
committed to volunteer
service at all levels. K-Kids
was created to do just that -
involve elementary school
children in the community
and get them excited about
volunteering. This branch of
Circle-K meets every Friday
from 12:00pm-1:00pm at
Sierra Vista Elementary
School. Volunteers work
with students from 4th-6th
grade during their lunch
break. Any student at Sierra
Vista may participate, but it
is not mandatory. We
usually have at least 20 kids
show up, and they are all
excited to be a part of this
fun and engaging program!
In order to get the
children to become more
aware of the community and
world around them, we
involve them in
community-wide service
projects. Students are
currently collecting soda tabs
for the Ronald McDonald
House Charity, and are also
participating in the national
greeting card competition
within Circle-K
International.
When I first heard about
K-Kids, I knew that it was
the perfect program to get
involved in - I am studying
to be an elementary school
teacher. The students are
always excited to see us
show up, and appreciate that
we work hard to learn their
names and make the
experience more personal.
Once we get all the kids
together in a circle, we begin
the service project, and
always work on it with them
so that they know what they
are doing is important.
When they have finished, the
second half of our time is
spent playing with and
getting to know the kids.
When the bell finally rings,
they don’t leave until they
are each wearing one of our
name tags, to show pride that
they love attending K-Kids!
We give these children
something to look forward
to, and a reason to be excited
to go to school!

SERVICE WOLFPACK PRESS
discovery museum

adopt a park/
BBQ & water balloon social
By Erika Mettke
On Saturday September 10, at
10am we all went over to
University Ridge Park to pull
weeds, cut plants, pick up trash and
move mulch around. Because
Circle K has adopted University
Ridge Park, it is important for us to
keep it clean for everyone to enjoy.
It was very labor intensive and we
all worked hard for two hours.
After cleaning up the park, we
all enjoyed hanging out and eating
pizza and snacks while bees kept
attacking us. My favorite part of the
whole event was definitely the
water balloon fight. Five hundred
water balloons and 10 minutes later
everyone was soaked and we could
not stop laughing. The proceeds
from the water balloon fight went
to Relay for Life, which is
important because my goal is to
fundraise $3000 by the time Relay
for Life roles around. This event
was by far one of my favorite
events; it included service, social
and fundraising and I had a lot of
fun.
Early on a Saturday morning on
September 3, myself and twelve
other Circle K'ers made our way to
Center St. for the grand opening of
the Discovery Museum. Hearing
the word 'museum', I figured our
job for this service project would
be to direct tours around exhibits
and say random facts about
dinosaurs. This museum however,
was no regular boring museum, no
it was more like a giant fun house
for kids! This giant facility
consisted of an interactive room
highlighting Nevada's history, a
room where kids got to generate
their own natural energy, a
outdoors exhibit where you could
camp under the stars, and an art
room where they got to paint on
walls. The epitome of it all though
had to be the giant cloud jungle
gym kids could climb to literally
reach the clouds! It was called a
children's museum, but the other
volunteers and I certainty had a
blast assisting the kids at play.
