This Week in NC State Football
THE EX(PERIENCE) FACTOR: Not only does the Wolfpack return 18 starters from 2016, 11 of those returning starters are seniors - the highest number of returning senior starters in at least the past 25 years. In addition, two starters from 2015 who sat out last season are back. Those 13 seniors have combined to play a combined 595 games and boast 277 collective starts.
All eight defensive returning starters are seniors, including the entire front six, while 8 of the 9 starters on the offensive and defensive lines are returning and five of those eight are seniors.
This marks the most returning senior starters ever under Dave Doeren at NC State.
CHUBB PRIMED FOR STRONG SENIOR SEASON: NC State’s best “get” for 2017 didn’t come on national signing day, but instead a few weeks earlier, when defensive end Bradley Chubb announced his decision to return for his senior season. Dubbed one of the “best combina-tions of pass-rusher and run defender in the country” by Pro Football Focus, the AP, Sports Illustrated and Athlon preseason All-American posts some strong stats:√ Ranks 12th in NC State history in career tackles for loss (34) and 10th in sacks (16).√ In 2016, helped the Pack’s No. 8 rushing defense (108.6 ypg) by registering 22 TFLs - second
in school history only to No. 1 NFL draft pick Mario Williams.√ 10.5 sacks in 2016 was tied for third in school history and ranked 19th in FBS.√ His run stop percentage of 10.4 ranked first in the ACC last season with 39 total defensive
stops (a tackle that results in a “win” for the defense). He has the sixth-highest percentage of positively-graded plays versus the run among draft eligible edge defenders in 2016. (Source: Pro Football Focus)
√ 21 of his 53 pressures came from winning outside (39.6 percent) and another 16 came from the inside (30.2 percent), he also picked up a bullrush pressure every 59.7 rushes, which was No. 9 in the draft class.
√ Ranked second in the ACC in total pressures (sacks + hits + hurries) last season with 53 (Source: Pro Football Focus)
FINLEY’S FAST FORWARD: RS-junior quarterback Ryan Finley had three main goals he wanted to accomplish between a sophomore season that saw him post the sixth-best passing yardage total in school history (3,059 yds) and his junior campaign.
CLOSE CALLS: Four of six losses in 2016 were by seven points or less, including two by four points or less and one (vs. eventual national champion Clemson) that went into overtime.
TOUGH OPPOSITION: NC State will face eight teams that advanced to bowl games in 2016 and three that finished in the top 25 of the AP poll. The defending national champion and the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner will both play at Carter-Finley.
GOAL Develop a better rapport with his offense √
Bulk up √
Deep Ball Accuracy ?
2017 After being on campus for 14 months, Finley has been able to go through a season, spring practice and summer workouts with his O-line and receivers.
Finley now weighs over 215 lbs.
This was an area where Finley was “hard on himself,” according to his head coach. Although he looked strong on deep balls in camp, this remains to be seen
2016 When he arrived on campus at the beginning of June 2016, he didn’t know a single teammate and had never even gone through a practice with them before fall camp started (although he still posted the sixth-best single-season passing mark in school history).
Finley weighed in at 192 lbs. when he arrived in Raleigh.
54% of his completions last season were for 10 or fewer yards, 83% for 20 or fewer.

TOUGH CLEATS TO FILL: Although the Wolfpack lost just three starters on offense, one of them leaves a particularly big statistical gap. RB Matt Dayes (now with the Cleveland Browns) account-ed for 49% (249 of 504) of the team’s carries last season and 74% of the rushing yards compiled by the running backs (1,166).
RUSHING ROULETTE: A trio of players with varying experience should each get carries in 2017: junior Reggie Gallaspy, junior Nyheim Hines (who played mostly WR in 2015 and ‘16) and graduate student Dakwa Nichols. Nichols is the most expe-rienced in terms of games played (36), Hines has the most non special teams snaps (802) among the three, while Gallaspy has compiled the most rushing yards (550).
In terms of receptions, Hines leads the way (63-781), Gallaspy had 9-48 and Nichols 3-27.
HINES FOR A HUNDRED: With two seasons of el-igibility remaining, Nyheim Hines is the only player in school history, one of only four in ACC history, to tally two 100-yard kickoff returns in a career.
The junior had his first coast-to-coast return as a freshman against Clemson, and repeated the feat in the Independence Bowl victory over Vanderbilt.
Hines has posted two of the top five single season kick return totals in school history (920 yards in 2015 and 782 yards in 2016). After just two years, he ranks fifth in school history in kickoff return yards (1,702) and sixth in KOR average (25.4).
WHAT THE H?: He started his career as a TE/FB (and was All-ACC at TE in 2015). Then he was dubbed the “swiss army knife” of the Wolfpack of-fense (but couldn’t get on any awards lists because he wasn’t a prototypical anything). This year, Jaylen Samuels’ position is listed as an H, but even that doesn’t encompass all that he does for his team.
A first-team Athlon and Sports Illustrated, sec-ond-team AP preseason All-American, and ACSMA first-team All-ACC choice, Pro Football Focus named Samuels the No. 2 most versatile player in college football. He’s on the preseason list for the Hornung Award, which honors just that, and for the Maxwell Award.
Here’s where Samuels has contributed:Receiver: Has led the team in receptions each of the past two seasons (65 in 2015, 55 in 2016) Rushing: 89 carries for 557 yards for 6.25 ypc and a TD every 5.9 carries in last two seasons.Blocking: Graded out with 73% accuracy on blocking assignments last season. Scoring: Ranks sixth in school history with 31 career touchdowns (16 rushing, 15 receiving)
DISSECTING THE DEFENSE: : WIth 8 starters - in-cluding the front six - returning from a defense that was pretty stout in 2016, much is expected for 2017. Here are some facts about last year’s defense:
√ Held opponents to 5.1 yards/play - the best mark for NC State in over a decade.
√ Held opponents to 4.42 yards/play on 1st down, the 2nd best rate in the nation.
√ Ranked 8th nationally in rushing defense (108.6 ypg) and held five opponents to less than 70 rushing yards. In the past two seasons, the Pack has held 14 opponents to <70 yards.
√ Despite playing four teams that ended the season ranked in the FBS top 25 in total offense, the Pack finished ranked 24th in total defense.
√ Ranked No. 27 in FBS in scoring D (4th in ACC). That mark has gone from 84 > 66 > 52 > 27 since 2013. √ Team tallied 37 sacks (22nd in FBS). Returning players accounted for 31 of 34 (91.9%) of those.√ Three members of the defense are on preseason watch lists for national awards: DE Bradley
Chubb (Bednarik, Nagurski, Hendrick), DT B.J. Hill (Bednarik, Outland) and LB Airius Moore (Butkus).

THEY’RE BAAACK: Several players who could play key roles for NC State in 2017 sat out last season. JOHNATHAN ALSTON: Sat out after making the move from WR to CB; Now in the rotation of three at CB.GERMAINE PRATT: Played safety as a freshman and sophomore before moving to linebacker in the spring of ‘16. Suffered a shoulder injury in spring practice and missed the whole season.JUMICHAEL RAMOS: The Pack’s second-leading re-ceiver in 2015, he sat out last season after undergoing two knee surgeries. Although he was still limited in preseason camp, he showed flashes of his old self.C.J. RILEY: A true freshman in 2016, he tore his ACL during summer workouts. At 6’4, he’s tied as the fast-est player on the team with a 4.48 in the 40.
ON THE RECEIVING END: In 2015, wide receivers ac-counted for just 46% (114-246) of the Wolfpack’s total receptions. Last season, that number went up to 60% (159-263), even though H-back Jaylen Samuels has led the team in receiving for the second straight season.
2017 might be the deepest the Pack has been at WR in many years. Behind standouts Stephen Louis (2016 team leader in receiving yards) and Kelvin Harmon (led WRs in TDs last year with 5) are veteran players Gavin Locklear, Jakobi Meyers (former QB who now has a year at WR under his belt), Jumichael Ramos (who missed last season with an injury) and Maurice Trowell, as well as redshirts C.J. Riley and Daeshawn Stephens.
Five different receivers turned in eight 100-yard games last season - the most individual 100-yard receivers for a season in school history. Four are returning, although only two - Louis and Harmon - are WRs. Nyheim Hines has moved to RB and Samuels was the other.
AN OLD LINE: The NC State offensive line, aka the Band of Brothers, allowed just 17 sacks in 2016 - the best mark for NC State since 2003 and the No. 19 mark in the FBS. The Wolfpack QBs were sacked on just 3% of their pass attempts for the season.
Four full-time starters and one part-time starter return from last season. Tyler Jones (LT), Tony Adams (RG) and Will Richardson (RT) are back at their 2016 positions. Terronne Prescod started three games at RT in 2016 but is now playing LG. Bradbury, who started 13 games at LG last season, made the move to center this spring.
The Pack boasts starting experience at every position except one this season (see list of games starter below):
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: In addition to the many senior starters returning for 2017, there is also a strong class of juniors. Besides the three returning senior starters, the other five returning starters on offense are juniors: QB Ryan Finley, WR Nyheim Hines, WR Stephen Louis, OG Garrett Bradbury, OT Will Richardson and OT Tyler Jones.
In 2016, 21 juniors earned varsity letters, while 19 sopho-mores and 10 freshman also lettered.

ACC POSTGRAD PLAYERS Rk. School Postgrads 1. Virginia 12 2. Pitt 9 3. NC State 8 Clemson 8 Syracuse 8 6. Virginia Tech 7 7. Duke 6
POSTGRADS: NC State has eight post-graduate players in 2017 - one of the highest tallies in the country (t27th) and tied as the third-highest mark in the ACC.
Cole Cook, Peter Daniel, Ryan Finley, Deonté Holden, Dakwa Nichols, Jumichael Ramos, Bryan Smith and Carson Wise each hold undergraduate degrees. Finley, Holden and Wise are just juniors in eligibility.
LINEBACKER DEPTH: NC State has the luxury of starting two experienced senior linebackers this season. Jerod Fernandez is back for his fourth season as a starter at middle linebacker, while Air-ius Moore has started every game of the past two seasons and got the nod in four games as a true freshman in 2014.
Moore and Fernandez haven’t gotten much time off recently, as they’ve combined to cover 87% of the snaps played by the defense in the past two years.
This season, the two seniors may have a chance to catch a breather. Junior Riley Nicholson has played in 24 career contests, starting four. RS-junior Germaine Pratt comes off a redshirt season and a move from safety and had a strong fall camp.
WHAT A RUSH: NC State has averaged 202 rushing yards per game during Dave Doeren’s tenure as head coach, an average of 2,581 yard per season. Those numbers are the highest in 40 years, spanning back to when the great Ted Brown ran through the ACC, posting the league’s all-time career rushing mark of 4,602 yards.
HINES ON TRACK: It’s been a busy year for junior Nyheim Hines. He had barely untied his cleats following the Independence Bowl (where he returned a kick 100 yards!) when he was lacing up his spikes and joining back up with the NC State track team.
During the indoor season, he earned second-team All-ACC honors in the 60 meters, finishing sixth in the finals. Following the ACC meet, he came back and went through part of spring practice with the football squad, then went back to competing during the outdoor track season.
Hines earned first-team all-conference honors outdoors, finishing third in the 100 meters, and was a member of the ACC Champion 4x100 meter relay squad, which qualified for the NCAA regional meet and posted the fifth-fastest time in school history: 39.14. In 2016, Hines won All-America honors as a member of the 4x100 meter squad.
LOUIS GOES LONG: Redshirt junior wide receiver Stephen Louis had a dramatic comeback from two shoulder surgeries last season, leading the team with 678 receiving yards. He was the first player since Jerricho Cotchery in 2003 to post three 100-yard games in a season, although he ranked third on the 2016 squad in total receptions with 35.
Louis definitely made the most of those 35 opportunities. He averaged 19.37 yards per catch last season, the third-best mark in the ACC and the No. 13 average in the FBS. That mark ranks ninth in school history, while his 17.86 yards per catch mark for his career is the fourth-best ever for a Wolfpack receiver.
After earning the team’s Gary Rowe Award for wide receiver of the year, Louis was also a co-recipient of the Ken McNeill Iron Wolf Award, which is given annually for a player making a comeback from an injury.
NO TOs: Under Dave Doeren, NC State has been extremely selfish when it comes to giving up the football. In 2015, the Wolfpack set a school record for fewest turnovers with just 13 (seven fumbles lost and six INTs). The previous year, Dave Doeren’s squad lost the ball just 15 times. Last season, that number was up to 20 (eight came in a three-game span against top-11 defenses: Clemson, Louisville and Boston College.

GAME 1: NC STATE vs. SOUTH CAROLINA NOTING THE PACK
GAME 1: NC STATE vs. SOUTH CAROLINA NOTING THE PACK
KICKING WARS: Only 12 FBS teams connected on fewer field goals than NC State’s nine in 2016 and the Pack’s 17 FG attempts for the season was also among the nation’s lowest. Kyle Bambard, who was a soph-omore, and graduate transfer Connor Haskins both struggled, with Bambard connecting on just five of 10 attempts and Haskins going 4-for-7.
Haskins has completed his eligibility, and although Bambard has returned for his junior campaign, a trans-fer has joined the squad and will enter the season as the starter. Graduate transfer Carson Wise will have two seasons to play in Raleigh after connecting on 21 of 31 FG attempts and connecting on 97-101 PATs in his two-year career at Carson Newman. He earned All South Atlantic Conference honors as a freshman and sophomore.
FINLEY ON TARGET: In his first season at NC State, quarterback Ryan Finley posted the ninth-best single-season completion percentage in school history (.604). That mark ranked eighth in the ACC for 2016.
However, in terms of adjusted completion percentage, which accounts for dropped passes, throw aways, spiked balls, batted passes and passes when the QB is hit as he throws, Finley’s number goes way up (see chart).
Finley led the nation in completion pct. through the first few games and had more pass attempts (139) as a starter before throwing his first pick than any player in school history.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Wolfpack football celebrates it’s 125th birthday in 2017, just a year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first game in Carter-Finley Stadium. NC State (then known as The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts), played its first football game against a team from the Raleigh Male Academy on March 12, 1892 in what is now Pullen Park in front of 200 spectators.
A&M’s team colors were pink and blue. The coaches were professors who had to be convinced annually to coach the students about a game they barely knew themselves. The length of the first season was a single game, which A&M won 12-6.
From those humble beginnings, NC State University has been competing at the highest level of college athletics for more than a century, as a charter member of both the Southern Conference and, later, the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack has played more than 1,200 games.
GAME OF JONES: NC State has an offensive tackle from Georgia named Jones who is entering his second year as a full-time starter. NC State has a defensive tackle from Georgia named Jones who is entering his second year as a full-time starter. Both Joneses have received far less attention than some of the men play-ing beside them, but both play vital roles for the Wolfpack.
OT Tyler Jones played 98% of the team’s offensive snaps last season and every game during ACC play. Start-ing at the all-important left tackle spot, he did not allow a sack in the last seven games of the year.
DT Justin Jones was a huge force behind the Pack’s run-stopping ability last year and was an honorable mention All-ACC choice by the league coaches.
The Joneses, who aren’t related, came to State at the same time, although Tyler redshirted a season. They have combined to play 2,590 snaps, 60 games and have 35 starts.
HOW THE BAND WAS BORN: Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford used to ask his brother-in-law, a for-mer Green Beret, to tell him about the training and preparation that that elite unit went through with hopes that he could borrow some of the training or motivation techniques with his players. His brother-in-law recommended that he watch the old Band of Brothers miniseries on HBO. Before long, Ledford had adopted that name for his offensive line at Appalachian State and he brought it with him when he came to Raleigh in 2016.
So what is the Band of Brothers according to Ledford? “Even though we aren’t related by blood, we go through things that make us true brothers. The guys in the Band of Brothers believe that the guy beside you, behind you or in front of you is more important than themselves. Everything is about the group, not the individual.”
His unit has proudly bought into the concept, and it’s been reflected by their play on the field.
QBU: Midway through the 2017 NFL preseason, NC State leads the way in the NFL as #QBU. Only three schools nationally have more than one alum starting at QB among the 32 NFL squads (Cal, Michigan State, NC State), and the Wolfpack leads the nation with three starting NFL QBs heading into the 2017 season.
This offseason, Mike Glennon (2009-12) signed to become the starter for the Chicago Bears. He follows in

Oct. 13, 1921: NC State back Charlie Shuford intercepted a Gamecock pass and raced 55 yards for the only score of the day, as the Farmers of NC State College scored its first ever victory over South Carolina, 7-0. It was one of three errant passes picked off by State College on the day.
Oct. 24, 1927: Star back Jack McDowall threw three touch-down passes and scored three extra points in a Thanksgiv-ing Day clash at Columbia’s Melton Field, as the Wolfpack completed its only undefeated league schedule as a member of the Southern Conference.
Nov. 23, 1957: Senior halfback Dick Christy had never attempt-ed a field goal as a college player until he convinced head coach Earle Edwards to let him try a 37-yarder with no time left on the clock, thanks to a South Carolina defensive inter-ference penalty. Christy had already scored the Wolfpack’s first 26 points in the contest, on four touchdowns and two ex-tra points. The Pack’s regular kicker, Dick Hunter, had missed his previous six extra-point attempts and had not made a field goal all season long, so Edwards had to make the choice of going for another Hail Mary pass to the end zone or giving Christy the chance to become the biggest single-game star in ACC football history. With a low line-drive kick that barely made it over the crossbar at Carolina Stadium (later named Williams-Brice), Christy not only capped off the biggest solo scoring day in school history, he gave Edwards and the Wolf-pack its first ever ACC title, thanks to North Carolina’s win over favored Duke on that same afternoon. For years, until the two teams stopped playing regularly, the media selected an NC State player as the recipient of the Dicky Christy Award.
Nov. 18, 1961: A total of 16,000 spectators saw Roman Gabriel play his final home game in a Wolfpack uniform at Riddick Stadium. The two-time ACC Player of the Year completed 17 of his 22 passes for 215 yards, ran for an additional 40 yards and was responsible for four touchdowns while leading his team to 27 unanswered points after it fell behind early 14-7.
Oct. 8, 1966: A crowd of 35,000 spectators were on hand for Carter Stadium Dedication Day to see the Wolfpack host the Gamecocks in the first game played at NC State’s new off-campus stadium. Sadly for the gathered crowd, South Carolina won the game 31-21 for its only victory of the season,
thanks to a 98-yard touchdown by Bobby Bryant that still ranks as the longest punt return in ACC history.
Oct. 3, 1973: In one of three instances when the Wolfpack scored on South Carolina after time ran out, a Dave Buckey pass thrown in the final seconds bounced off the hands of Pat Hovance and into the arms of John Gargano after time expired, giving the Wolfpack a 56-35 victory over the Gamecocks in Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina, called timeout with four seconds to play, despite a two-touch-down deficit. The Wolfpack used the timeout to set up one final scoring play that even head coach Lou Holtz said was unnecessary, to record the most points by either team in the series history.
Nov. 1, 1986: With no time remaining on the clock, the Wolf-pack had one last-ditch opportunity to beat visiting South Carolina, thanks to a Gamecock offsides penalty. Using a play literally drawn up in the dirt on the sidelines by first-year head coach Dick Sheridan—a South Carolina alumnus—future NFL quarterback Erik Kramer found dual-sport star Danny Peebles in the back of the south end zone for a 35-yard Hail Mary touchdown and a 23-22 victory. It’s still regarded as the most exciting finish in the 50-year history of Carter-Finley Stadium.
Sept. 4, 1999: Former Wolfpack coach Lou Holtz made a drenched return to Carter-Finley as head coach of former ACC-foe South Carolina, thanks to a game-time deluge brought by Hurricane Dennis. Holtz’s career got off to a miserable start as his team lost four of eight fumbles in the downpour and went on to lose all 11 games in his inaugural season with the Gamecocks. The Wolfpack scored the 10-0 game’s only touchdown on a blocked punt.
Aug. 28, 2008: Future Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson made his first career collegiate start against the Gamecocks in Williams-Brice Stadium—but he didn’t last long. The young player suffered a Grade III concussion and had to be carted off the field early in the second quarter. The Wolfpack lost the season-opening game, 34-0, but Wilson came back and had a record-setting first season for second-year head coach Tom O’Brien, becoming the first freshman to be named first-team All-ACC quarterback.

the footsteps of the Los Angeles Chargers’ Philip Rivers (2000-03) and Seattle’s Russell Wilson (2008-10) as former NC State QBs who are now starters in the NFL.
In addition to those three, Jacoby Brissett (2014-15) won a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots as a rookie last season. He started a pair of games early in the year for the World Champions.
BIGGER & STRONGER: Much ado has been made about the Wolfpack’s strong defensive line for 2017. But the four starters on that well-publicized group haven’t always been as strong as they are now. Hard work in the Wolfpack’s strength and conditioning pro-gram transformed Bradley Chubb from a 248 lb. linebacker to a preseason All-American at defensive end. And Outland Trophy candi-date B.J. Hill probably wouldn’t have made that list if he still weighed in at 254 lbs!
TOUCHDOWN MACHINE: Jaylen Samuels has been a scoring machine for the Wolfpack for the past two seasons. His 16 touchdowns in 2015 is the third-best mark in school history, while his 13 scores last year ranked seventh (he also threw for a TD in 2016). For his career, Samuels ranks seventh with 31 TDs. He is the most diverse scorer in school history however, with his scores almost evenly divided between rushing (16) and receiving (15). The second most balance scorer ever for the Wolfpack? Cleveland Browns rookie Matt Dayes, who rushed for 34 touchdowns and had six on receptions.

One of the landmarks of North Carolina’s capital city,
Carter-Finley Stadium has gained a reputation as being one
of the nation’s toughest places to play. The home of the Wolfpack boasts
57,600 permanent seats and is sur-rounded by acres convenient parking.
CAPACITY: 57,600. Double-decked with more than 22,000 lower level sideline seats, almost 18,000 upper deck seats, 13,000+ endzone seats.
FIRST GAME: Oct. 8, 1966
ORIGINAL COST: $3.7 million. Half the funds were raised from alumni and friends and the balance was borrowed.
NAME: The stadium honors Wilbert James (Nick) Carter (1902-1972) , Harry Clifton Carter (1908-1990), and Albert Earle Finley (1895-1985). The two Carter brothers graduated from NC State from the school of Textiles and became top executives in the J. P. Stevens Company. They contribut-ed several hundred thousand dollars to fundraising for completion of the stadium.
FIELD: The playing surface at Wayne T. Day Family Field is built to USGA spec-ifications for a golf green. The USGA specification has an elaborate drainage system and a 10” rootzone mix that is 90% sand and 10% peat. The field has Tiftway 419 hybrid bermudagrass from Sandhills turf farm in North Carolina. The irrigation system consists of 6 “big gun” sprinklers that spray over 200 gallons per minute. The water source is well water that is contained in tanks.
