I. Introduction
Two main periods of activity occurred at the Wolf Lake property during the report period October l, 1985 through March 31, 1986. A reconnaissance geologic mapping and sampling program was done by Robin Goad and Bill Rowell on several selected areas of the property in November, 1985. Three areas covering approximately 1500 acres were mapped. Several new zones containing weak mineralization and pink sodium metasomatism in brecciated quartzite similar to the Wolf and Jess lake deposits, were identified and warrant additional work.
A diamond drilling program that consisted of four holes totaling 4520 feet was completed through the ice at Wolf Lake in February and March. Ore quality mineralization was found in only one of the four holes drilled. The information gained from these holes will add greatly to our understanding of the geology and mineralization in this still relatively unexplored region of the Huronian basin.
Other activities that took place during the report period included an TCPanalysis of some selected samples from the property, annual assessment workfiling and the transfer of sample pulps and rejects to a new storage area.

III. Diamond Drill Program
Hecla's second year of winter drilling commenced on January 30 and was completed on March 28. The drill contract was again awarded to Philippon Diamond Drilling Inc. of Rouyn, Quebec. A single Boyles BBS-37 skid-mounted core drill was used, with the work scheduled on a two twelve-hour shifts per day basis. The six-man drill crew was housed in the tent camp located on the west shore of Wolf Lake. Camp servicing and access were contracted to Ramsey Airways in Sudbury using ski-equipt Cessna 180 and De Havillin Beaver aircraft. Supervision of the work in the field was handled by Frank Tagliamonte of Geological Engineering Services in North Bay, Ontario.
Four vertical B^e core holes were drilled from the ice on Wolf Lake with the combined footage totaling 4520 feet. Hole number WL86-1, at a depth of 1347 feet, was the deepest hole drilled to date at Wolf Lake. Drill penetration rates below about 1150 feet were very slow, and this might be a practical depth limit for the equipment used when drilling from the ice.
Direct drill contractor costs totaled $131,257.15 (C) or an average cost per foot of $29.04 (C). This represents a significant reduction in cost when compared with the cost of $36.32 (C) per foot in our 1985 program.
The intended target for all of the 1986 holes was the Lake Structure gold zone. Three of the holes were sited along the east side of the structure to explore the downward projection of the zone. The fourth hole, WL86-2, was positioned south of an inferred cross-fault that displaces or truncates the Lake Structure, and was designed to explore for a southerly continuation of the zone.
Geologically, the results from the three northerly holes did not conform well with our proposed model for the Lake Structure zone. By the model, each hole should have intersected gray Lorrain quartzite down to a depth of about 500 to 700 feet, then entered a 50 to 75 foot section of dike, finally penetrating mineralized pink quartzite breccia and hopefully an ore zone. The holes actually encountered mixed gray and pale pink massive quartzite with erratic sections of pink and/or gray breccia below 600 to 900 feet. Mineralization was generally patchy and minor in the breccias. A few thin diabase dikes were present in each of the holes, and several of the breccia consisted of mixed diabase and quartzite fragments.
Two reasons are suggested for the lack of correlation with the proposed model. In the model it was assumed that the structure had an easterly dip of between 70 and 75 degrees. If the dip were steeper or possibly vertical, then the holes probably missed the main structure and only intersected peripheral sections of breccia. The second explanation is that the zone weakens at depth and is represented by only erratic narrow breccia intervals containing spotty, weak mineralization.
Gold mineralization in the three drill holes was fairly weak and with the exception of a high-grade interval in WL86-1, no sections assaying above 0.1 opt were recorded. The high-grade section in WL86-1 was located at a depth of 723.3 to 724.8 feet and consisted of 15 to 602 pyrite with minor quartz and carbonate in pink quartzite breccia containing a high percentage of diabase fragments. The average of two separate assays made on this section was 20.75

opt gold. Abundant tiny grains (.2 to 1mm) of gold were visible in this section in both pyrite and quartz, and were often present along thin late-stage silica filled fractures in the pyrite. A 19-foot section of core immediately below the high-grade interval averaged 0.08 opt gold. A single one millimeter grain of free gold was also noted at 709.8 feet in a core section that assayed only 143 ppb gold. A lower gold-bearing zone was present in WL86-1 between 996.7 and 1060.2 feet and averaged 0.042 opt over the 63.5 foot section. This section consisted of gray and pale pink quartzite breccia with 102! dark green chlorite and diabase fragments. The breccia matrix consisted of about 402 quartz-carbonate and 3!J disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite. Drill hole WL86-3 contained anomalous gold values in breccia, but no significant assays. The last hole drilled, WL86-4, contained a 30-foot gold-bearing section between 637.8 and 667.8 feet that averaged 0.080 opt. The host rock was a gray quartzite breccia containing minor quartz-carbonate and 25? fine-grained disseminated pyrite.
Hole WL86-2 was located south of an inferred east-west cross fault, and did not encounter the pink quartzite breccia. A thick section of diabase was intersected between 647.8 and 898.3 feet. Only a portion of the diabase was split for assaying. The assayed sections contained minor quartz-carbonate- pyrite mineralization and/or abundant minor fracturing. All of the splits contained anomalous gold and one 36-foot section between 642.8 and 678.8 feet averaged 0.037 opt gold. This represents the first identification of significant gold mineralization in a diabase host rock at the Wolf Lake property.
A summary of the gold assays in each hole exceeding 0.04 opt is listed below:
