1 Work in pairs. Number yourselves 1 and 2.

2 Number 1s face the board. Number 2s must face away from the board.

3 You are going to be shown a diagram.

4 Number 1s must describe the diagram to number 2s.

5 Number 2s must draw the diagram on A3 paper, based on Number 1’s description.

Routes to the ocean

Describe four routes by which rainfall mightreach the ocean.

WJEC (B) GCSE Geography

Theme 2 Topic 2

1 Precipitation fall flows over the surface to the ocean.

2 Precipitation falls and lands on leaves of trees, drips off (stem flow) and flows over the ground as surface runoff (e.g. as a stream).

3 Rain infiltrates soil and flows through soil as throughflow.

4 Rain infiltrates soil and flows through saturated zone as groundwater flow. Click to

Exam tips

• The question says ‘explain’, so you should try to use the words ‘so’ and ‘because’ in your answer.

• Use key words from the water cycle diagram.

• Don’t write the question out again — it wastes time.

Theme 2 Topic 2

Question: Explain how cutting down trees might affect the water cycle. (3 marks)

1 Less interception

2 Loss of a store of water

3 Less transpiration

4 Increased surface runoff

So, a good answer would be:

There would be less interception of rain [1 mark], so there

would be greater surface runoff [1 mark] and a loss of a store

of water [1 mark].Click to

Exam tips

• The question says ‘one way’, so you need to give only one example.

• The question says ‘explain’, so you should try to use the words ‘so’ and ‘because’ in your answer.

• Use key words from the water cycle diagram.

• Don’t write the question out again — it wastes time.

Theme 2 Topic 2

Question: Explain one way that human activity can change the water cycle. (2 marks)

1 Tarmacking/concreting the ground = water can’t infiltrate

2 Cutting down trees (deforestation) = loss of store, less interception, increased surface runoff

3 Planting trees (reforestation or afforestation) = creates a store, more interception, slows surface runoff

4 Building a reservoir or dam = increased evaporation

5 Farming = planting crops creates a store, harvesting removes a store

6 Industry = takes water out of a system

7 Building a well or borehole = takes a water store from aquifer

So, a good answer would be:

Concreting the ground [1 mark] would stop the water infiltrating the ground. [1 mark] Click to
